Game Discussions SWTOR vs SW: Galaxies

I was pondering giving SWTOR a try as I have always been a Star Wars nerd, however in my research I discovered that there are some private Star Wars Galaxies servers running and the client is available as abandonware.

Has anyone got any recommendations of one over the other? I am leaning towards Galaxies as it is set in the SW era I am most familiar with but thought I would put it out to others who may have experience with either?

Played both when they came out. They are very different games and very much reflect the era they were written in. Galaxies was released in 2003 and SWTOR in 2011. It's a bit like trying to compare apples and oranges as they are very different games despite being in the Star Wars Universe.

Star Wars Galaxies comes in two flavours currently: Pre-New Game Engine (NGE) servers and NGE servers. Even in Pre-NGE servers there are some differences around the Combat Upgrade version or lack of it in there build. Your would need to do a bit of research as to your preference of version and features or lack of it. Main difference between pre and post NGE servers is the skill/class system. Pre- NGE has a mix and max skills based system and NGE has a fixed/limited set of classes.

Crafting and resource collection are amazing in either version of Galaxies. UI is well, very different from modern standards and the key binds are interesting. Graphics are dated. Quest system is limited as Galaxies is a sandbox game where you can live the life of a moisture farmer if you want. The housing system is amazing as well for it's time.
Galaxies had a lot of major additions to its game play over it's development life so an NGE server has a lot of game play complexity. Economy is mostly broken due to inflation etc on the two different servers I have played on. No idea on the state of other servers as there a quite a few of them around.

SWTOR is a much more modern game compared to Galaxies. It has a fixed class based system and classes have some restrictions around which faction your choose. Want to use force lighting on your friends and enemies then you must embrace the dark side :). If you like a good rpg story and quest system then SWTOR has it in spades. Need a companion to care about or ignore then SWTOR has it. I was not keen on the crafting system in SWTOR but it has one. No idea about the economy as I don't currently play. I do own a bit of the DLC but the Aussie servers shut down a long time ago and I had to migrate to a US west coast servers and enjoy the lag. When they removed them and your only choice was US east coast servers I gave up.

I could keep typing but I would need more info about your gaming interests ?

Personal I started 3 times on different servers with Galaxies as I was not used to sandbox games and that was in its hay day of 26+ servers. Max level master architect (crafter), combat medic/doctor/tka and post NGE a commando, trader (domestic goods) and entertainer.
SWTOR I just jumped in on the unofficial aussie US server and was away. I have played 3 different characters to max level on the dark side and one on the republic side. Loved the story for each of them.

Thanks, really appreciate your detailed feedback.
It sounds as if I should give SWTOR a try, even though it is not really an era I am familiar with.

There's some big changes coming to SWToR in the next update currently on the public test server. You are no longer locked out of weapons and force abilites depending on your faction and class. How it works is they will divide classes into two categories, tech and force users. Tech classes will be able to pick any weapon style so if you wanted to dual wield pistols as an agent you will have that option instead of being limited to either rifle and sniper rifle. A Jedi will be able to use force lightning if they fall to the dark side and a Sith will be able to use light side abilites if they go light side with their choices.

I played an Imperial Agent (sniper spec) which has a great story, perhaps one of the best. I mention this because while you might be looking for a spesific type of playstyle, you might find the class and story that this playstyle is locked to is boring, like I found out when attempting to get through the Jedi Consular story. With update 7.0 you are free to choose between force user and tech user. Not sure when the update hits live servers, december perhaps, but you shoul be able to respec once it is live.

Do those Galaxies servers run the Jump to Lightspeed expansion? If so, that allows flying all kinds of ships, from XWings to light transports. My favourite was the Decimator. I dont think they ever got as far as docking ship to ship, but you could have multiple players on a ship and could man different stations. And you could use those transport sized ships to store stuff, as you would a house. Oh, yeah, they had housing, a city style electoral system, and thought I dont recall many or any cities going to battle against each other, they could wage war. I'd not be surprised if that was the true inspiration for ED and SC, really. Sadly, they were just seeing the tip of the iceberg when they shut that all down.

Does that still require owning an original copy of Galaxies to play? I'd have to reaquire one to play, if so. :(

I have only played on two of the servers:

  1. SWG Awakening (Pre CU) which does not have Jump to Lightspeed (last checked in 2020)
  2. SWG Legends (NGE) which does have Jump to Lightspeed
but there are 22 in total that I know of - https://swgemulator.fandom.com/wiki/Servers

While I own a copy or two of Galaxies :) I believe that this post may answer your question.
