Sync files hangs

Hi there,

I am trying to install Elite: Dangerous but I don't have a Steam version. I have Elite Dangerous Launcher and to install the game it's syncing files. That failed or something once and then I managed to get it going a new time but now it hangs again. I could click play and in the first attempt to install it briefly opened a window that closed itself soon after opening. I have clicked it now and it opens "Elite Dangerous (CLIENT)" but that's just a black screen. I have to force it to quit with task manager to be able to press "PLAY" in the launcher again but it doesn't do anything different than opening a black window. The launcher is eating up a lot of CPU and RAM but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. If you look at the screenshot it shows "2.54 MB/s" and "2h" but it doesn't seem to download anything.

What could I be doing wrong? Is there a guide to installing this game? I went to the support page but I didn't see my situations mentioned.

Thanks.

I've cancelled the download and it said I had a possible network failure. I very much doubt I had a network failure.

After cancelling I had the option to validate the game files. It said something about a manifest and then starts to sync files again. That hanged again.

It takes a very long time to complete, and doesn't show any progress while doing it. It appears to be hung, for 30 minutes or more. How long did you wait?

@ebbrell, thanks for the suggestion. I've added a 1TB SSD. How do I change the location of the game?

@Codger, about 6 hours the first time and 4 hours the second time.

Edit: I've reinstalled the launcher as that seemed the only way to change the game file directory. The launcher is at D:\EDLaunch. It's syncing files but space used on D:\ is still at 279MB but I see the space used on C:\ increasing...

It's definitely using C:\ even though the installer said it would be possible to install the game somewhere other than C:\ if you'd install the launcher to another place than C:\.

Well, I don't know then. Mine is installed on the C drive, in C:\EDLaunch (I have it on D on another machine, though). There are some internal settings files that wind up on C, too, in the
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous folder. Those always go there, as far as I know, about 86MB.

The C:\EDLaunch folder has about 69 GB in it, with both Horizons and Odyssey installed.

I guess you'll have to contact FD support and raise a ticket.

Thanks for your time. I appreciate it.

I don't know either. I've been looking at my network traffic and it seems to only download with 1.2 Mb/s on average so it's broken anyway.

I've raised a ticket. Hopefully someone from Frontier can install the game for me.

Thanks again!

I imagine it is using your temp folder on C: which if you dont have space would probably cause it to hang if the launcher is not checking or reporting space requirements correctly, maybe check space on C: and or clear your temp folders. Might be AV or windows security is blocking it. Could be any manner of things, just a couple to check.

Thanks. I see E: D is about 4GB and requires 8GB. I freed up 80GB on the C drive so there should be plenty of space. I cleared the temp folders and files. I don't think disk space was ever the issue but now with nearly 90GB free on C:\ and over 900GB free on D:\ I should have plenty of space for the game.

I'll check Windows security. My Windows installation is pretty stock; I only use Windows to play some games. I did an internet speed test and I got 100 Mb/s wired and 80 Mb/s wireless, both up and down. But when the Elite launcher is "syncing" I am uploading just a couple of kB/s and downloading at an average of 1.2 Mb/s.

Is it common for Windows security to bother the Elite launcher? Is there a list of domains to whitelist for Elite?

The speed test tests the speed you get from your ISP. The ED download speed is for the whole chain, from your PC to the server you're loading ED from. Depending on whatever else that server is doing right now (and how much of that server's bandwidth gets alllocated to your download), that number you see is not unreasonable.

I understand the first part. But on the second part: it's 1.2 Mb/s or 0.15 MB/s. That would be highly unreasonable, haha.

I wiped my main SSD and added another SSD (please don't think I'm rich; I'm sacrificing a server I made years ago :p ) so I could install Elite: Dangerous with a completely stock Windows installation and completely empty secondary drive.

It seems to be working. If you don't hear back from me I'm flying through space! After I've installed and configured all the hardware again, that is... :p

I've made screenshots for future reference. They show the empty drives, the installer and the launcher.

Looks like most images don't show. Figures.

The manual says Elite: Dangerous requires 8GB. That's obviously way more. Also, you need a lot of space free on C:\, regardless of where the launcher is installed and where the game files will be placed eventually.
