Taking weapons n exploration

this is an interesting point.

Just took a DBX to crab, station x. reinforced Shields, SRV, 3 weaps (2 LW MC, 1 eff burst) 3 shield boosters (all class E), 1 x heat sink, D rated thrusters, D rated LS, Sensors etc. A rate PP, D rated PD. Also ADS and DSS. Jump range 52LY, maxed is 54.5LY. FSD long range eng'd grade 5.

Always wanted to go to the crab, been 3 years till i got round to it, did it 163 jumps. Got CR16M for scans.

Does it need to be uber-light?

Edit - nearly did it in a courier, seriously. It does 30LY jumps fully kitted, admittedly LW bias for the grade 3 enhanced thrusters, but toyed with the idea.

First time I went to the Crab Nebula I had a 25ly jump range pre engineering and injections, it took a couple of weeks. I just did it in an evening and a half without really racing in an engineered ship targeting jump range (a clipper so still not really pushing the range limits...).

Uber light, extra long jump range lets you reach a handful of the most distant systems that are otherwise unreachable and lets you travel faster but you don't generally need it.

For me it's not really a weight question with weapons. You can explore with a full combat load out - you can get decent range on that with the right ship. If that's what you want to do then carry on.

If you take a light weight explorer build and then just add guns you've got a terrible combat build and you will die if you try and fight anyone serious in it. So you can only run away. If you can only run away then why have weapons?

Exploring in a combat build - go for it. Adding just guns to an explorer build - silly.

163 jumps feels so little to me. 21k LY away from Beagle Point. My jumps from Colonia to where I am now has been 693...and that’s not counting the ones to Colonia from Deciat...and the ones still left to come! Ugh why did I begin this Trek!

Well, originally, I only wanted to go to the Zurara, and took along a Mining Laser and a Shock Mine Launcher.

However, my Dolphin "Blinded By The Night" turned out to handle exceptionally well, so I kept on going. In the meantime, I had it parked for almost half a year somewhere on the western rim (while playing in the bubble on my second account), but started going towards Beagle Point again, still lugging that Shock Mine Launcher. The Idea behind that was that, if I get attacked and have to run, I might as well make it a bit more difficult for anyone trying to catch up.

As an aside: tried the "New and improved" route planner yesterday for the first time. Faster? Sure. But 20 kly range? Forget it, the best I could get was just about 3000 ly, and even that only by routing down into the central layer, just above the unscoopables.
