Talking about sound effects.

First, I have to say I really do not like them. Especially the noise while accelerating and deccelerating the ship. It sounds too much like something from the 8bit era of gaming or how an UFO in a 50s movie might sound.

The visuals are in fact stunning but I sincerely hope the current sound effects are only placeholders, or at least modable.

Well, turbine sounds are probably also not realistic, but it least it would be less annoying then the electronic version of a two cycle car engine we have right now.

Really? I'm surprised to hear someone who did not like the sound effects.

It's one of the things I thought really, really stood out as amazing!

What kind of sounds would you like or think would be more suited?

Really? Seriously?

You don't like them?

Well each to his own but I happen to think they sound in this game is among the best I have experienced in three decades of gaming. It is totally immersive and feels just.....so....right

I think the sound effects are 'out of the park' amazing.

Turn the sound down then

The sound effects were one of the things that caught my attention. It sounds so different than most games in the genre, and I think it really adds to the immersion by 'broadcasting' a sense of speed and what the engines are doing.

I'm in the camp that thinks they're a solid A.

Watching the streams the only thing that bugs me is the voice and I hope it's an option to switch it off completely to replace it with a sound theme

Really!? You'll find that pretty much everyone here absolutely LOVE the sound design in this game! And not just here either...the sound design is one of the things that people generally is extremely impressed with everywhere else I've looked on the internet too. This is saying a lot since sound isn't really what people pay attention too.

You are of course perfectly fine to your opinion, but you'll probably find yourself in the minority. ;)

Personally I am really happy with the sound. I would like a little more verbal warnings from the ship computer and some comms chatter but most of it is just awesome.

I totally sign that statement!

The sound design in this game is absolutely gorgeous. The first time I ran this game on my TV set while playing the sound through my 5.1 speaker setup the contribution of the sound effects to the awe-inspiring feeling of immersion was so significant I can hardly stress enough how great the sound design in this game is. IMHO it totally conveys what it is supposed to. I seriously hope, that FD does not change their design direction in this regard.

A surprising thread, because I always thought sound design in ED was excellent. Double so if you consider the development stage we're currently in.

To each his own I guess.

The sound design of Elite Dangerous is mind blowing. They are doing a really great job.

Can't say the same thing of Star Citizen if the ones in PAX were the real thing.

You have all the right to voice your opinion, but in this case you will be in the minority because almost everyone who has posted comments and impressions from the game so far have commented on how great the audio is!

So this is an issue I would expect you will simply have to deal with, hope you can do that because you will hopefully enjoy the rest of the package :)

Well, congratulations on being apparently the only person on the internet, if not the Universe, who doesn't like the sound design. Even though it's on a par with the work of Ben Burtt, or say, Gary Ryndstrom.

[...]sounds too much like something from the 8bit era of gaming or how an UFO in a 50s movie might sound.

I disagree with this, and echo what else you're reading from folks who think what they're hearing is top drawer sound design. As for 8 bit, perhaps look on Youtube for some examples of true 8 bit games and you'll see how silly that assertion is.

But besides the engines, which admittedly, like all aesthetic issues, are personal; have you ever thought about the rest of the soundscape the game delivers?

I'd suggest you take your ship to the first combat mission, or into any spot of space, really; but as I'm Premium Beta the asteroid field is what I know.

Once there, use headphones. Turn them up slightly higher than normal. Ignore the engines if you like, but if you focus on the rest of the sound HUD you'll find an incredibly rich tapestry of noises going on. Far more so than most games, space games in particular.

For instance, I was looking at an asteroid the other day close up and collided with it. Hearing the noise that made, I remained in contact with it and used my translational jets to scrape along the rock. The quality and quantity of noise generated from that tiny part of gameplay, something many would never encounter, is a great example of the depth of the design Jose Casto has done here.
