Talking about sound effects.

On the whole, I think the sound is fantastic, I started a thread in praise of the hyperspace jump sound effects and their spooky brilliance, but......

I can understand that the engine sounds may not 'propel everybody's ship'. One of my favourite sounds was in the original Empire Strikes Back (less so on the blu-ray) right after the battle for Hoth, Luke turns round to see the Millennium Falcon blasting off from the base and accelerating away to make its escape. The sound of that engine is to die for, its gutsy, defiant, powerful and brave.....

That's not true of the engine sound in Elite, but you obviously can't have "gutsy, defiant, powerful and brave all the flipping time. :)

Maybe for the boost?

And obviously, there's so much sound in Elite that the engine sound has to fit in the mix without seriously impinging frequency space required for other sounds.

On the whole I'm thrilled to bits with the sound, but I understand some of us would like a bit more beef in the voice of our ships.

I do hope seriously battered ships creak and rattle though! :)

Maybe that is the root of why you don't like the current sounds but a lot of others love them.....you are expecting them to sound like something you can identify (the Millenium Falcon) whereas I get the impression that those of us who really love the sounds do so because they sound right, although we can't necessarily compare them to a specific sound.

Last night I was sitting listening to the surround sound when I eased in beside an anaconda in my little sidewinder. The rumble was something else. I wont tell you how long I played around going faster and slower so I could hear the rumble switch speaker. Yeah I am sad, but hey I had the time to be sad.

On the subject of 8 bit music - anyone remember Match of the day on the Spectrum and the music when the players came out. Then there was JSW

I have to chime in here.
My first forum post, hello fellow commanders ;)

The sound effects were - in the videos I saw - so stunning, that purchasing the premium beta was a no brainer. I really really love the sound of the engines, powering up and down, going sideways... and I thought the change in effects when entering a station was sort of an ear-opener. (btw: what happend to those?)

So, please, Frontier, no change ;)

Actually, I could compare them to most Star Wars Ep. 1/2/3 small ship engines, which I think pioneered that kind of stuttering, turbine-y sound (I don't know if Star Wars really pioneered that kind of sound, but it was perhaps the first very popular film franchise to do so).

Not to say they're bad: in fact, I too am in awe for the top-notch sound design.

I was also thinking that the stuttering, while somewhat “alien”, also really helps understanding unmistakably what the engines are doing: it's very clear when they're accelerating, decelerating, idle (and the ship is coasting) or boosting. Boosting is awesome by the way!

Also, from what I've heard in the videos, the sound of the two superluminal drives is even more awesome (can't even say which one is more awesome than the other) and I can't wait the end of the month to try it out for myself.

The ship's voice is great too: it's warm and cold at the same time, reassuring and yet constantly reminds you that you're in a dangerous situation all the time.

The only ship voice that's better than ED's is Homeworld's: the way the commander said “Motherhip” when you selected the mothership... can't be bested. Ever.

Hmmm the engines are my favorite sounds, especially the exit hyperspace one!

It's the beam weapon sounds that I'm not too happy with at the moment - A little too much 'pew pew' in that toy laser gun way IMO.

Then again, Freespace 2 beam weapon sounds spoiled me. http://youtu.be/hMa3LXe6oVc?t=53s

Admittedly there is just no way the devs can please everyone, so the OP's opinion is totally valid. That said, I've noticed that even the rather critical folks over on the Star Citizen forums have at least begrudged the fact that ED's sounds are 'rather good' (paraphrased).

And anyone criticizing the cockpit voice, all I can say is thats she's called 'Bitchin' Betty' for a reason. ;) She ain't there to be all nice and cute to you. :D (Again, my own opinion of course)

First, I have to say I really do not like them. Especially the noise while accelerating and deccelerating the ship. It sounds too much like something from the 8bit era of gaming or how an UFO in a 50s movie might sound.

The visuals are in fact stunning but I sincerely hope the current sound effects are only placeholders, or at least modable.

Well, turbine sounds are probably also not realistic, but it least it would be less annoying then the electronic version of a two cycle car engine we have right now.

Dude are you just on here postin for negative attention? The audio effects in Elite are phenominal and the vast majority agree...might as well join the club, those sounds arent goin away.

-If you absolutely cant stand the sidewinder/cobra s.effects...jump into an Eagle or wait for new ship designs, the eagle in particular already has different s.effects than the others.

There! If I have to criticize anything, it's the projectile sounds: a bit too “pop pop pop” in my opinion, and not fast enough. But on the other hand, I really much appreciate the slight clinking sound of the last rounds, which subtly warns the pilot that the cannons are about to reload. That is great.

But perhaps I too am spoiled by Mass Effect 2/3 projectile sounds: http://youtu.be/XCQUl2m0BSA?t=1m13s

You need to read my post before commenting. I love the current sounds.

Hope you're joking, otherwise you've never been bothered by a dashboard rattle that you can't find!

I know what you're saying. I remember cutting the end off a plank of wood, painting it matt black and forcing it between the ash tray and the radio on the dashboard of my Ford Escort to alleviate an infuriating squeak/rattle. It worked, and nobody ever spotted the bit of wood. :)

But I'm talking about enhancing the atmosphere of nursing a badly damaged ship back to port. Hull plating rattling away, damaged cooling system venting loudly etc.

It would all be fixed in the repair - but in the actual event of whether you could bring the ship, and maybe a fabulously rewarding cargo home, I think it would be very immersive.

Same here. Watched some of the alpha gameplay videos, thought the sound effects were absolutely stunning (especially for an alpha release), bought the beta.

One mans wine is another mans poison I guess.

You love them but hope they are just placeholders? :S

You see I did read your post and my immediate comprehension was that you don't like them and consider them of 8-bit quality with the inference that they are inferior and should be replaced. I'd suggest that many others who read your post also took it to be that you didn't like the sounds judging by the number of replies actively supporting them and offering negativity towards your opinion.

If you are referring to the multi cannon... it is the only weapon sound I would change. I would like its sound to be just a bit heavier and faster (the weapon would have to fire a bit faster too of course).
Not like the GAU-8 Avenger though :).

Then you need to pay more attention who you're replying to. Angus was not the OP on the thread.

As I said, read my post - please! (emphasis on "my").

You are attributing a bunch of stuff to me that the OP said. I didn't.

Really! :)

All i ask is increase that pre amp. lol

I hate having to turn the volume way up for the game only to have my head exploded when i turn my music on.

The sound design is full-on amazing. The "pod racer" whirr of the ships engine is quite inspired and original.

That is true, I've noticed that on my system too... I almost never need to adjust my system or speaker volumes but always have to turn up (and down after) for ED.
