Talking to friends - PS party Vs in-game chat

Is there anything clever in ED which determines if you're already talking to someone on a PS 'party' and disables the in-game voice comms if so?

I ask because I've only actually done this once, with a friend, and we did indeed fire up a party first for comms, and I didn't see anything in-game when we winged up. But I thought I read somewhere that wings automatically got voice comms which is why I'm wondering whether it was smart enough to disable it due to the pre-existing PS chat, perhaps.

Anyone know exactly how it's meant to work and what options are best / what the pros and cons are of each?

ED does nothing smart, the PS4 disables comms to the game if you're already in a party chat.

eg: if you form a wing (no party chat), and have not auto-disabled voice comms in-game, then once the wing connects you both have voice chat up and running.
invite a 3rd person, and they automatically join the in-game ED voice chat. Ditto a 4th.
Now if two of you start a PS4 party chat, you two will only hear and transmit to each other. The other two players in the wing are still using in-game comms, do not hear you.
I don't think you hear their comms thru the game sounds (you will if no chat device, and not in a party), but can't specifically recall.

But really have everyone in a PS4 party chat, or all in-game: don't try to mix and match.

The main advantage of PS4 chat is it may be clearer, anecdotally I think it handles poor connections between players better, and also you can have 8 total players chatting (eg two full Elite wings could all chat together in one PS4 chat).

My only problem with the in-game voice comms it the game adds a filter to make voices sound like they are communicating over a radio...which made it very difficult for me to understand the other players.

Thanks very much, great explanation and really appreciated.
