Target and module panels

Hello Commanders,

I use keyboard and mouse + dk2 . Headlooking left and right pops out the gui panels for targets and modules. Just like on a normal monitor when you middle mouse button and headlook .

Is there a way to deactivate this automatic feature? I want to be able to look left and right with the rift and be able to maneuver the ship with asdw , something that can't be done if the GUI panels come out.(asdw then controls the panels) I want to enable panels only when I press "shift" + a,s,d,w .

There is a keybind to Disable UI Pop up (named something like that).

I use it with HOTAS, not sure how it will work with WASD/Mouse.

I can use shift key if I keybind the buttons that navigate the UI Panels to something other than wasd, but thats not practical, considering I am using oculus rift. I searched thoroughly to find something in options to deactivate this feature, but I can't find it.

Come on now, this isn't remotely realistic. I am a spaceship fighter pilot, I am following target with my head, and whoops UI Panels pops up blocking the way and taking over my controls. This is a serious design flaw.

you're in the rift and flying with a M/K? eeek... you're not done yet! Get yourself a hotas and a believable seating position... it will change the game for you.

how much does a joystick cost?
about 1/10th the cost of a DK2,
1/10th the cost of a decent graphics card that supports a dk2,
1/10th the total cost of your PC not inlcuding the DK2 and a decent graphics card,
1/10th the cost of your monitor, if you got one of those low latency hdmi ones,
that would be 1/40th the cost of your total outlay so far.
go nuts,
get a good joystick,
that might cost you 2/40ths of your total outlay so far.

I have the same rig since 2009 (i7920) and a mediocre r9 270. A good stick costs 100-200 euro. I will not buy a peripheral like that when the only game i'll be likely to use it with is Elite Dangerous. I rather upgrade my gpu using that money. Again even with your suggestion. Lets see ... I lock on target with my head , goes through my UI panels, whoops... View blocked by a computer screen. This shouldn't happen. Its wrong.

Also, this wasn't a problem with a Cobra, since windows are a bit above the automatic panel pop up thing. But with the asp... the damn panel is right in the middle of the window!

Please don't reply with "Buy a cobra then and sell the Asp" . Cause its something like that when you tell me to buy Hotas.

There is an option for this, but it is automatic with the rift so the popups happen. At least I'm assuming that is the case.

The setting is under graphics-> Disable UI Camera lock-on (always on in the rift)
The solution I have found is keeping UI focus button pressed when looking to the sides. This prevents the popup menus to show. I'm using HOTAS but I'm sure if you map a button to UI focus (in settings/controls/mode switches) you can get the same feature to work with a kb+m combo.

I think this should be addressed. As I said before , problem with rebinding the keys that focus to each panel, is that i will have to use a 2nd set of keys for Panel Menus. That is impractical when using the rift.

They should allow to disable this automatic pop up in the rift, and actually to be perfect they should put a keybind to be able to turn it on and off. I want it on when trading and exploring , but of when I am entering combat.

I agree with OP. Using the Rift and a Joystick, I want to be able to disable the panels from popping up automatically when looking in their direction and only appear when I hold shift/UI panel key. When mining in big open cockpit ships like a Type-7, the panels block a big portion of the view while trying to track a fragment.

What is your problem Seanwasere . These were not solutions, what you proposed are workarounds.

When I first got the game I used a Logitech 3D Extreme Pro. It only cost me $35 and has enough buttons that I very rarely needed the keyboard/mouse. There's a logitech hotas for $70 if you want to kick it up a notch.

I still wish I could disable the menus though. It's annoying to have them pop up when looking around in a dogfight/asteroid belt or when you just want to look at the scenery.

I had my eye on Logitech 3D Pro and the Thrustmaster T16000M but both cost 50-60 Euro in Greece. That's too much for me just for one game. Star Citizen is to far away to put that into account.

I'm sorry i don't have a perfect solution for you but some comments on the thread...

I think there is no perfect solution at this moment from the game (i.e. disabling auto-popup of the screen) and it will clearly take some time for the developers to change that. So what i'd do is moving the UI controls somewhere else on the keyboard. Like the NUM-pad. (8,4,5,6 for directions, 7 & 9 to witch tabs sounds reasonable for me)

about the whole hardware purchase shopping. You have to know how you want to spend your money on your own. All i can say is, a flightstick makes it a lot easyer to get around in the game. Maybe you can find a cheap online shop or you have a friend who doesn't need his anymore?

Also: Check your CPU usage before you upgrade. I have an i5 from 2009 two and it's nowhere near it's limit while playing. Upgrading the CPU means you have to upgrade the Board also. The bottleneck is usually the graphics card these days. Wich brings me to the next suggestion: never (again) buy the low price graphics card. The "bang for the buck" ratio is bad and it's usually just powerfull enought to play games of the current generation with mediocre details Or FPS. Which means that it's insufficient for the next comming games. It's better to save up some more money for a graphicscard that can still keep up with some oncomming generations instead of upgrading to the next cheap step every other generation.

I got a GTX 570 for "battliefield bad company 2" and it still ran BF4 on medium details with ~30-60 FPS. I replaced it with a GTX 770 only because I wanted to give myself a treat and i had a friend who needed a replacement card because his broke down. So i gave it away as a present. If i didn't do that, i had to upgrade for Elite now. But that means my ~340€ card outlasted 3 cards for ~180€ (560€ in total) and i got to play one generation of games on highest details, one with small detail reductions and one optimized for performance. (for competitive games)

nah dual joysticks is where it's at

stop flying in straight lines

this thing can turn on a dime, macross style
