Target Module List Order

Is there logic in the module list order of a targeted ship?

i know there is a grouping that occurs with modules like shielding and other system related modules toward the bottom with drives and weaponry listed higher.

but why are weapons sometimes listed above drives or vice versa. is this ordered by power consumption? what about the order of modules within each group?

curious if another commander has discovered any rhyme or reason.

I believe there is. But, I don't directly know the 'code'. What I have found is that there is more of a stable order for internal modules, if you 'step' through them in reverse. I can go back six or seven steps, depending on the ship, and land reliably on a PP.

Instead of binding "Next Subsystem" to your most convenient finger - bind "Prev Subsystem"
The FSD is six clicks and the Power Plant is seven.
It becomes muscle memory pretty quick.
"select next hostile, six clicks in the right hand, boost in the left."

The other timesaver I have for combat is the prev and next subsystem are up/down on a hat (sometimes I overshoot and sometimes they run so you want the FSD)
Left is "Next Target" and right is "Next Hostile". I should probably bind the prevs with a modifier, but to be honest, I'm still rebuilding my bindings after the last patch when I lost them again.

What was camera soft focus again?

Nice. Yeh, I'm starting to think I need to rethink some bindings.
(Some combined buttons don't work as well on PC as they did on PS4...?)

Good question OP.[up]

I cycle through modules in reverse too, I'll usually target the fsd first (since 3.3) to stop them running then go up again for the power plant.

Did module targetting change with 3.3? I only recently bought ED...
And, like the OP I have been wondering about the module sequence.

AFAIK the process & order for module targeting didn't change, but the AI behaviour did & I adapted my technique to stop the AI high-waking away if I can't kill them quickly enough. Most of my ships use Beams & multi-cannons so my dps is relatively low.

I have a hat on my throttle with select ship forward/back and select module up/down.

Prior, targeting, and reducing, the Power Plant to zero would greatly reduce the TTK an NPC. Now dropping the PP doesn't destroy a ship, it just reduces the targets efficiency as in our ships.

I've known that a long time, but I still target the PP out of superstition.

Do you have a better suggestion- FSD? Shield Gen? Thrusters?
What should be the go-to subsystem to target first?

As mentioned above, the FSD. The newest AI iteration does quite a lot more waking out.

My fight evolved to not targeting a sub-system anymore. I just generally target the other ship. This has happened because I often deselect a target that is throwing chaff. Having to re-select a module after targeting was sucking all the fun out of a fight. I figured hitting with locked gimbals is funner than chipping away at the PP.

i was aware of this consistency which is what had me wondering why the reverse isn't true, other than the Cargo Hatch always being the first listed module. particularly when targeting drives.

The best I can reckon is this is due to ships having different Optional slots between them, but are largely fixed, same modules required on all ships, where Core modules are concerned. By some organizational quirk, the core modules have ended up at the bottom.

This is usually true, but it depends on the target ship. Drives are first on the list of the T10. Sometimes Drives are right after cargo hatch (conda), sometimes drives are 6 or 7 clicks down (vipers, eagles).

Also, why are there 2 drives on the list? 1 for thrusters 1 for FSD? It doesnt seem to matter which one I disable its all so confusing.

You are targeting the thrusters as modeled on the ship, so it depends how many the ship model has. Because of this Clipper/Chieftain styled ships have a slight advantage in their Thrusters being so widespread, less likely to be damaged from rear attacks

interesting. ever notice differing order on similar models? that is a T10 whose drives are not listed first?
