Team Invite not working

Sending a team invite to a Cmdr that I can actually see in game (so no instancing issues) either results in the invite instantly timing out or, when accepted, not working.
Very strange as it was working fine last night.
Both myself and the other Cmdr tried relogging, supercruise out of the instance and back and even completely restarting the game from desktop.
Anyone else seen this or have a solution?

I know this is an old post but I'm having the same issue with a friend tonight. It's my first time trying to start a team and do co-op missions so I have no idea what's supposed to happen or how to make it work. Seems like a lot of the tutorials online are outdated by 5 years or so, too.

I can confirm that inviting a friend worked last night. Therefore, not a general problem and perhaps only some instances affected?

EDIT to make it clear: Both players have to be in the same group or in open. Solo does not work!
