Tell Me About the Chieftan

Weapon placement looks good, if you like turrets:

Why are you all saying Chieftain has great maneuverability?
My Dropship, which people hate because of the "poor" maneuverability and drift or something, is much more maneuverable than Chieftain.

The Chieftain turns faster, but also drifts more. But it beats the dropship in terms of firepower and, if the slot 6 info is true, very well in survivability.

To me it felt like the Chieftain was very nimble but it tended to drift a bit. Didn’t bother me too much during combat honestly but it’s not as precise as the federal ships in my opinion. That said it was fun to fly and it does sport good firepower.

I think if you're partial to flying to the abilities of a given ship, rather than finding a ship that flies the way you want and going with that, the Chieftan is powerful enough, maneuverable enough and well enough armed. That said, perhaps the Chieftan just suits me, because I found it a real beast, especially after I engineered the crap out of it. I found that I had plenty of firepower to deal with bigger ships and plenty of scoot to retreat and charge up my shields if I got into trouble, and plenty of maneuverability to deal with smaller ships. Did I mention plenty of firepower? I think the sweet spot with the Chieftan is balance. It's not weak anywhere to be strong somewhere else, unless you consider cargo space, then you will lose something, but I think the Chieftan is a dedicated combat ship if ever there was one in ED.

Just my $.02, but I think she's worth looking into for a well rounded combat ship. (P.S. I kitted mine out with 2 large beams, 3 small rails and a med seeker rack and it was as I said a real beast.)

Lets see,

All modules laid in for Chieftain, credits set aside for ship and reactive armor. All in all, can't wait. Why own one? Probably along the same reasons as my other Chief

Yeah, my daily rider (the bike) made the center of one of the local mags. Sexy.

Medium-sized, high maneuverability, Alliance-version of the FAS with an extra class 4 military slot.
Looks like a dog taking a dump when landed.
Hardpoint placement is mainly along the ship's centerline, and convergence is pretty good.
Overall a great ship for.. for.. something.

These 2 points are what will make me buy it b/c the rest are not as good as my Clipper.

The vulture has two large hardpoints, the chieftain has 2 large, 3 small on top with excellent convergence and 1 medium in the bottom. in firepower the chieftain is far superior to the vulture, in maneuverability maybe the vulture wins, i´m not sure about that.

It's canopy is harder to hit too.

The Chieftan appears to be the Alliances answer to the FAS, but they were smart and didn't rank lock it. It also comes in a white colour scheme, which, as an Imperial, I highly approve of.

Agree, except it still doesn't look as good as the Clipper which is designed for basking [big grin]

I'm guessing it doesn't rain much where you stay, Bob? That beastie would be Irn Bru coloured in a week up here... :p

Nice bike mate. [yesnod]

I keep hearing about this Chieftan and I'm curious. I don't know much about ED ships. My two best ships are the Vulture and the Asp X. I'm sitting on 50+ million and would like to buy a new ship. I'm friendly with the Alliance.

So, tell me, what is it about the Chieftan that makes it worth consideration? Cargo capacity? Fighting prowess? Defensive capabilities? Speed achievements? Jack of all trades? What?

Thank you in advance. :)

I'm a big Vulture fan and enjoyed combat in the Chieftan in the beta. Definitely picking one up next week...

Uno momento. Despite advertising a better jump range than Clipper, it's got the same small fuel tank but less unlocked module slots (4 are military locked). Hmm, having 2nd thoughts again about this plus never liked small HPs which are pretty much useless unless you put missile racks or mine launchers in them

So a Steam poster is correct in saying Chieftain was a rushed Alliance design for the primary objective to fight Thargoids.

The chieftain is a combat, assault ship. Its NOT a multipurpose ship. In beta an A-rated chieftain would cost 70 mill fully upgraded (including military composite armor). Hopefully they dont up the price.

Its a good ship... for combat. maneuverability is good. Good for fixed weapons. except when having to deal with ship launched fighters. Your going to want gimbals if your dealing with ship launched fighters all the time

If only it was medium pad capable.....

I know, all large ships ought to have a fighter hanger. Otherwise, Clipper should have swing up wings like T-10 for landing in outposts.

The 2 small HPs are pretty useless despite some advised to put railguns on them. It also has 3 military slots locked for HRP, MRP & SCB only :(
