Tell me I didn't really hear this...

There are a lot of things I've done that I am ashamed of. Texting my sergeant saying I'm 10-19 when heading out to hang out with him is not one of them.

Shameful because to say such a thing, to utter those words, immediately signals oneself as being a certain type of chap. The type of chap, in fact, who would go around saying,"Oh seven". Clearly a wrong'un and, potentially, a social misfit.

Misfit, or someone who frequents the internet and appreciates the exclusivity having a non standard language that each can understand brings. There's no shame in it at all.

The tragic part is jumping to conclusions and making a sweeping generalization about the quality of their character based on it.

Actually saying the words,"oh seven", is extremely embarrassing and sad and I hope that apart from this in-game johnny none of us would ever employ such a toe-curlingly naff thing to say.

Maybe you've all gotten the wrong idea... perhaps the fight controller was watching old reruns of Star Trek Voyager...

Yes but would you say, say not type mind, "oh seven"?

If the answer is yes then you are a wrong'un sir. A wrong'un, I say!

I think, in this case, the conclusions jumped to are entirely appropriate.

Prejudice is never appropriate. It is always tragic. It is willful ignorance

The issue is that "o7" is a pictograph and "Oh Seven" should not in itself be spoken.

This can illustrated by the following video commentary on the WRITTEN language of ancient Egypt

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKsTTcJgvFg

I for one seriously doubt that the SPOKEN language was the equivalent of :

[Dog] , [Dog with a cat's face] , [Cat with a Dog's face] , [Man with a thing] , [Eye with legs] , [Pot with legs] , [Two Dogs] , [Bug with a sort of wavy thing]

[Circle with a broken T] to all you fellow Commanders out there.

The older generation hasn't liked how the younger generation talks since at least 400 BCE. I'm willing to bet that that the first hominid capable of modern speech had her parents grunt at her in disapproval.

Gosh, I can't wait to see the word "entitlement" in this thread. Eight pages so far. I know it's just got to be there somewhere! lol.

Oh Seven!

Don;t really see a problem with this. I dont see a problem with saying, "five by five", as I'm coming down to land. I don;t see a problem with saying "Fox two" as I launch a torpedo at an enemy. And I don't see a problem with my NPC controlled mother ship telling me "You've got the ball" when I come in to redock my fighter.

I love ham radio, air traffic control and military radio chatter. It all makes one sound important, official, tactical. :) Voice Attack is a nice way to simulate some radio conversations.

"O-7" is part of the Pilots Federation's established radio code for StarCon, for use between stations and pilots. "O-7" indicates "acknowledged," much like 10-4 in old earth radio talk. Other examples of the lingo include "O-2" which indicated a canopy breach or life support emergency, "O-5" for requesting police assistance, and "O-8" for an inability to slow down and requesting the mailslot be cleared. The fact "O-7" can resemble a salute when written as o7 makes it often used by pilots communicating via text as well.

There, now you have a lore-like reason to explain the chatter. It's what the term "ret-con" was made for, like trying to explain the Kessel Run ;)

or O-0 for "Damn, I hit the eject all cargo by mistake again"

Correct, and it has been going on since (insert geological epoch).

I'm trapped in a room, full of kids half my age, and the most striking thing about it is that I can remember being *worse* then they are.

Sitll, they are frakking up *all the time*, even after being told, in advance, the consequences. So, they can't be let off the hook, either.

Neither do they want to hear the history of *why* things are the way they are. Nothing occurred before 1996, or later. "It is, what it is", they say. Then, they become more self centered, and less empathetic.

I say "no more indoor plumbing or electricity for you". And 18 hours a day, 6-7 days a week, followed by a life expectancy of forty. Then, we can go back to the Gilded Age in technology, as well as society. :)

You mean these ones? http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/rich-kids-of-london-boast-about-setting-fire-to-87k-mercedes-gwagen-a3420681.html Welcome to the future

I am effectively going to open my own nightclub . Since still like to party but No one dances anymore and they just want people to get drunk. If anyone is interested let me now.

Could someone please produce a handy guide Entitled Guidelines for Cross Generational communications.

I am constantly being told that My docking Request has been denied.

Do you go up to mates and say "Friendship drive charging"

or May the Force be with you. LLAP

Or call people Muggles?

So do players still go round shouting 'noob'?

Surely this must have gone way of topic. So cant anyone see. Regardless how we all feel, in the Black we are all in it together and we haven't even got into the whole gender issue in gaming yet!

Or Õ for "I just boosted through the mailslot, hit the back wall, but I'll be alright".

I couldn't find the code for "My T-9 just got stuck between the buildings in the medium bay past my allocated one. I'll be out in... oh good you've given me 24 seconds."

Needed that one a couple of nights ago, after bouncing off the back wall. T-9s aren't really designed for smuggling:)

Hey, don't be an L7 about it.

He's a hepcat, he's probably C moon.

On topic, I kind of like the Oh Seven callout for the salute. I like the interplay of language media that creates it as a spoken phrase.

Though there's always the chance it was done unintentionally; like Kevin Costner's poor poor accent in Prince of Thieves actually being closer to a real period accent, but not on purpose.

Fair warning, if you have an opinion on anything, no matter how pointless, harmless and benign, prepared to have it vigorously disagreed with, shot down, ridiculed and hated.

This should be rule 1 of the internet.
It used to be, before people started to believe in "safe spaces".
