This weekend I ground the mats for modified guardian shard cannons and found out I like them a lot better than the guardian gaus cannons. I really hate the delay between pulling the trigger and the gaus cannons firing (I never liked rail guns either). Also it looks to me the shard cannons do more damage.

This is the Krait I've been using at surface ports, closely based on D2EA's Plasma Krait.
You don't have to worry about the swarm on planet surfaces, and this thing can tank a lot of damage. The modified plasma chargers are pretty easy to use if you're crap with fixed weapons like me (high shot speed) and do a lot of damage without frying you.
