Newcomer / Intro Testing the waters ... Sorta

So I have done some looking around on YouTube and such and to be honest I really would like to try out this game. However I am a bit worried that there is a slight possibility that i may not like it and really really do not want to burn $60 on a game that i may or may not play. In that case ... Is anyone active right now that would like to maybe stream a bit of the start of the game for me? ... I have a TS server that can be used to chit chat a bit. I know its a bit of a stretch but i just don't want to buy the game and be "one of those guys" who didn't use the resources to fully research the game before hand.

Anyway ill be checking this post every few minutes for the next couple hours if anyone cares to take me up on my request.

Thanks in advance!

If you look on Twitch there are a few streams already, a journalist from BBC was also going to start playing yesterday and stream her whole experience.
But if you like games that tell you what you need to do, you probably won't like it

My standing advice is to watch some Twitch streams or YouTube videos, and see if it's the kind of game for you. Many Twitch streamers keep an eye on their chat channels, so asking questions in there might be useful.

I don't know of anyone specifically streaming the start of the game, but here's some current streams and past broadcasts:
http://www.twitch.tv/directory/game/Elite: Dangerous
http://www.twitch.tv/spacegamejunkie/profile/past_broadcasts

I would be pleased to do this for you, but I might be the most sanguine, boring pilot in the game, and I suspect you would get very little from my stream.

However, I would answer any questions you might have, if you had any.

In truth, Muthax may be right, or may be wrong. The thing about Elite: Dangerous is that, well, it's very much like the old games from when I was a callow youth from the days before colour, when children ate lard sandwiches, walked uphill to and from school in July, and when a directionally challenged Moses was trying to lead a bunch of hasidic sightseers across a desert (okay, enough of that.) It's very much like the old games from when I was young, where it wasn't on rails, when your choices could have horrible consquences.

E: D will not hold your hand, if you destroy your ship, you lose what you had, and you pay to get back what you had, possibly by going into debt (or use a free Sidewinder). You have to land your ship, thread it between some fairly tiny apertures, fight off pirates, mean people who just want to be jerks, nice people who are playing their choice of pirate (which I hate their profession, but I love that they're there) who want to rob you of the fine cargo you have decided to feed your family with by selling, fly though 99% empty space, understand HOW to get to new systems, understand HOW to get away from pirates, mean people, and NPCs (or how to attack those same people and others), and just generally not have your hand held.

Is this one of the most engaging, thrill a minute, can't put down games? Not for everyone. Is it for me? Well, let me put it this way - I chose to back it, I enjoy it, I wouldn't stop playing it for the world. It is a game you can put down when you get bored of figuring out what commodity is most suitable, or figuring out where to get that commodity to fill that mission, and pick it up again when you just want to play for a bit, for an hour, or kill off your entire day.

If you have doubts, chances are that you might not care to spend the money on the game. Also, watching someone else play the game is not the best way to determine if you like it. Anyone who is likely to stream it for you is also likely to be very familiar with how to play it, and you will initially have a very different experience to what you would see them having.

Also, and I cannot stress this bit enough - how do you feel about your entire keyboard, mouse, and joystick (or Xbox360 controller, I suppose) being used to control a game? Variously, I use my keyboard, my mouse, my Logitech Extreme 3D joystick AND a Logitech G13 gameboard to access various functions (it's not necessary to have all these, but it's the setup I like best).

This is an open-ended game, and it is not forgiving in that it literally allows you to do just about anything you think you want to do within the sandbox that it controls, but you have to put in what you want out of it.

Not the best inspirational speaker, it seems.

haha leslie you sound about perfect. Id love to hook up with you and get a better feel for the game. I think that by actually being able to activily engage in conversation while you are playing will help me a lot. I have been watching more videos and i feel that i can be almost certain i will enjoy this game.

@Leslie, I don't want to push anyone away from ED, quite the opposite, but seeing some of the reactions from newcomers (not all of them but a few) I think it's safe to say that people who prefer a more linear or structured approach, might not like ED

that's why I suggested watching streams

Open world is all for me. I do not like to have everything mapped out for me already. I like to go and choose what i want to do when i want to do it (aside from like taking a timed mission or something)

I have been watching streams all morning. Checking out videos etc. I think i will get a lot of enjoyment out of the game. Just discoverd the head tracking so now im watching videos on that. I mean if I am gonna get the game might as well go all out right?

I would read some of the 'complaints' from other new players to see if any of them resonate with you or not (and the answers to them)

But imagine tonight you go to sleep and wake up tomorrow in a spaceship seat, with a few credits and nothing more than your brain and the help you can get from other pilots (well and of course a whole galaxy made of stars, asteroids, other ships, stations with boards for jobs, commodities market etc.. I mean a whole galaxy)

If that suits you, you'll have the time of your life

I am pretty sure i will have the time of my life lol. I will admit that as it stands this will be nothing more than a place hold for Star Citizen though :( ... But who knows, it is possible that SC could fail hard. But i do believe that i will begin my download now :D. Thank you all for the assistance!

Ah and do the tutorials (they are in the game menu, above start), don't do like me and just jump in the game thinking "tutorials?? AhAhAH" ;)

Any time you think you wanna start over, in options you can CLEAR SAVE and restart

I get away with the free version (20 commands) but I am about to spend the 5 quid to get the whole package, more as a form of support than anything else

Oh yes, please don't get the wrong idea, Muthax. I agree with you 100%. I've been watching the forums enough to see the tidal shift in this real planet based on the love and hate people are expressing. I would hate for anyone to buy a game I love, find they hate some aspect of it, and hate it.

JudeSaint, let me see what I can do to set up a good time. I have some stuff I have to do (at work), so cannot log on to play at this time, but posting at the moment, I can do. Send me an email, and I'll try to get some streaming set up, so you can watch, and ask. Just be prepared for a trader's view, not so much the pirate, bounty hunter, or miner. I do have guns, though, so the first two might not like me a whole bunch.

Well, okay, maybe a fighter too, so don't get any ideas.

A trader, eh?
That's great, really! I started off exploring quite a lot in my Sidewinder and then switched to trading when I could afford the Hauler.
Yesterday I bought the Cobra Mk III and absolutely love that ship. Planning to do a little mix of trading/exploring/fighting.

I hope you'll be able to enjoy the game as much as lot of us do :3
Oh and, if you like, feel free to add CMDR Malkav to your friends list, can't have too many contacts in this vast galaxy ;)

Okay! I have set up a twitch account (LeslieH1), and am streaming now (beats working for a while!)

I am offline now, but feel free to check back to see if I am online and streaming. I will attempt to stream whenever I am playing for a while. I thought it was rather fun. I even kept a copy of the session!

Got the game downloaded. Finished all the tutorials. I have to admit after really loving the control i have with start citizen i can honestly say im not a huge fan of the controls in this one. However that wont put me off! Btw CMDR Malkav i tried to add you but it can not find you. I am Jude so feel free to add me

So something i guess i missed. Is there no in game chat/whipser function other than hoping to find another ship to hail and then hoping you dont just get blasted out of the sky?

Right now, no. Communication is P2P
On the controsl, I can say the opposite, on the forums there was a 'yaw vs roll' debate long ago but yaw was deprecated (and nerfed) to avoid the turret in space syndrome

btw if you are talking about the SW it is a brick, you really want to try an Eagle

Bearing in mind if he just bought it, his only starting option is the sidewinder. Only pre-order and earlier got the free eagle at startup. If he's planning on a trading career diverting resources that are being saved for a hauler upgrade in order to purchase a ship with less cargo cap than a sidey probably isn't a good move. He can always play with an eagle later after he's kickstarted his trading bankroll.

Its still pretty confusing to me hehe. But yes i do plan on doing a lot of trading and hopefully some exploring. Ill get into combat a bit more when i have a better feel for the game. BTW do NPC's interdict you? I got pulled from errr not hyperdrive ... but the one just before it where you moving faster than normal but not super fast.... Twice. How would i know if it was a player or an npc? Lukily i got out both times but that last one was a doozy!

NPCs do interdict, yes. If you're clean and no worse than neutral rep with the local controlling faction, the fuzz will NOT interdict you, so if it happens under those circumstances its ALWAYS a pirate. Evade the interdiction by pointing yourself at the escape vector unless you;re up for a fight-or-flight scenario.

NPCs have a solid dot on your scanner, triangular if they have hardpoints deployed, square if not. Players are the same but their icons are hollow. Also, no NPC names start with "CMDR" but players always show that prefix - if it has that prefix it's a player, if it doesn't it's not.

In supercruise, watch your scanner for blips maneuvering to get into your six - they are probably trying to set up an interdiction. There are a few ways to make it harder for them but unless you ask I'll not elaborate on that, I had a lot of fun learning what they were and I wouldn't wish to deprive you of the same unless you want me to.
