Text in VR.

I'm having a blast with my Vive, but. I can't seem to get a decent setting for text.

I've got a strong pc with 1080 graphics. I'm currently running with in-game: SS at 1.25 and HMD quality at 1.5. Gamma turned down pretty low. No 3rd party tools.

Is there a solution out there to make text readable WITHOUT EDITING CONFIG FILES and 3rd party tools?

I wouldn't mind a big hit on graphics in general if only I could read the different in-game text/prompts...

Thanks in advance. :)

Update/Solution:

After trying everthing in-game without success, I finally turned to the 3rd party tool EDProfiler by Dr. Kaii: http://www.drkaii.com/tools/edprofiler/

And it solved everything. You can set all your VR settings from there, and best of all you can select or create all the colour schemes you need.

The standard orange HUD was unreadable to me in my Vive, but I stumbled upon this preset at EDProfiler which I highly recommend: NO2O Dark Deep Sky Blue_Gold.

Note of interest: Apparently the Vive has a more vibrant screen than the Oculus, thus the Oculus users don't seem to have problems reading the orange text. But being able to choose your colour scheme is always nice.

Maybe something for FD to consider implementing in-game?

Huge thanks to Dr. Kaii! You saved Elite: Dangerous in VR for me. :)

If you were on the Rift I'd say reset your IPD adjustment and readjust the fit on your head. I don't know if the Vive has similar issues, but checking the fit probably still applies. I don't have a problem reading text (orange HUD) except maybe for planetary coordinates and g rating - the really small stuff on the HUD - and leaning in helps a lot. I hear a blue or green HUD will make it clearer since there are more pixels, but I can't stand how it affects other things - I want green to equal friendly and red to equal enemy.

Oh, and make sure to focus on - look directly at - the text. If you just move your eyes, any text around the edges of your view will always look blurry.

Change HUD color to blue or green, that requires conf file changing though but i dont see why thats a problem?
Really, that default orange is the reason for unreadable text and changing it is the only way.

I don't see the problem.

I can read all the text without upsampling, and stock HUD colours.

Trick is to not try finding detail that isn't there and relax.

Same here - no supersampling and I didn't have issues even in the DK2 with stock colours.

However I prefer a greyish white as hud colour at minimum gamma as it's the most comfortable on the eyes for me. In practice, legibility is better in the Vive itself than in the video, because I'm focusing on the text I'm currently reading which is undiscernible for viewers.

Did some more mucking about (eyes getting tired now - noooob :) ). But cudos must go to EDProfiler by Dr. Kaii. I only used it to get a blue colour scheme for the HUD, and it more or less solved my issues. Much better to say the least. Running at stock in-game VR-Ultra settings and nothing else.

So yes. You are 100% correct Commander. :)

Tried glasses?

Cheeky monkey. :) But that's the Oc, right? Might be readable, but is it as vibrant?... ;)

Cheers Cmdr. Catpain. Blueish colour scheme changed my HUD from a blurry mess to quite pleasing. Even the little stuff. :)

So pretty chuffed now. Enjoying my new toy again. :)

I like the default orange. I've mucked about with other schemes but the changes in other parts of the game (character portraits, enemy/friendly radar blips etc always turn me off).

I have no issue with reading text in ED on 1080 with 1.0xSS ingame and 1.25 HMD Quality. Setting 1+SS is probably just engaging ASW earlier on 1080-class GPU, but your experience should guide your settings.

Maybe I'm just geared for the old-school amber/brown, green black and red of the original CGA PC incarnations :D

I must admit, before I even found out that I could change the HUD colour, I was able to read the orange text much better than I expected going by what people say online

Now that I use green, I couldn't go back to orange and you're probably some sort of witch if you do like it.

Where's my wand? :D

I'm going to take a stab at it, and say that you have an Oculus? Apparently the Vive has a bit more "vibrant" colours, which is good for some things, not so much for others.

Btw. I haven't done a full roundup of what the colour change does to the rest of the colour profiles. I hope it isn't too bad. But being able to read any given text is a must have for me.

Rest assured - with tuning in your Vive gfx settings, and changing the HUD colours - you can read everything

Either actually. I stick with stock colour cause I can't deal with having blue hostiles or purple wingman icons.
Yes the rift is ever so slightly better, but now it's really not much difference.

I also have the habit of shifting my head so the panels are slightly shifting over the text.
This alternate slightly what pixels are displayed of the letters and I put that together to form stressless legibility even for the smallest text.

Upsampling does help, but I much prefer fps but that's me.

I'm finding myself in a settings mess. What I thought worked only worked while docked at one station and not when I arrived at the next...

I'll be starting from scratch, but from what I understand it's better to launch from Steam right? I assume I can still use EDProfiler for HUD colour.

I agree fluency is key, but I have to be able to read the damn prompts too! Maybe I am getting too old for this ship.:)
