Thank you to everyone at Frontier Developments

I don't know how many of the developers will end up seeing this, but I just wanted to give a heartfelt thanks to all of the moderators, designers, programmers, artists, writers and everyone else involved in the development of Elite: Dangerous. :)

I have spent many hundreds of hours immersed in the universe of Elite, and I have had both a lot of fun and also frustration. Despite the times I have been upset, over the years this has consistently been one of the few games that has stuck with me throughout all the changes that life has brought me. Every day, I see many comments on various social platforms that are extremely hostile and rude towards the people who spend their lives working on this game. I do not want to dismiss the grievances that players have with the game, as it is not perfect, but I think that many people are just far too harsh or cruel. I don't see much vocal appreciation for the immense amount of work that has gone into the stellar forge, geographic simulations, physics models, art and not to mention all of the research that goes into making believable economies, governments, characters, content, and lifeforms. A lot of player feedback is valid, but some people will always be angry and irrational no matter what is done. However, even though the game can always be improved and will probably always be imperfect, Elite has achieved things nothing short of mind-blowing and inspirational. For the flaws it has, as a community, we can still choose to be constructive and provide helpful ideas and thoughts instead of just saying "boring!" or "game sucks!" or "xyz should be fired!" I read a lot of complaints that claim no one at FDev listens to the community, and that is simply not true. Livestream after livestream and forum post after forum post, player concerns are directly addressed or at least acknowledged (though devs do not have to agree with every suggestion). Even though some players may be silent, there are many of us who really love the game and appreciate all the hard work that goes into it; even though some of us may not say it too much. I don't think anyone with a clear and rational mind can say that Elite is not a labor of love, and that it has not made huge steps forward in the industry.

I don't expect that every video game is going to please every type of player, but I just wanted to bring some positivity and encouragement. No matter who you are, it feels bad when others say mean things about you when bleed, cry, and sweat to give people entertainment. The devs aren't perfect, but they do always strive to please players, whether or not it feels like it at times. So on behalf of myself and many of the more reserved members of the community, thank you for the incredible game that you have created, and I look forward to continuing to be a part of this community and universe for years to come. [heart]

At this point I would like to state that none of this is my fault...

+1, beta patch notes say there are over 1,000 bug fixes and improvements, plus the content. 2017 was dry, but this is what they've spent their time doing. Fantastic job and about time!

The core problem with "heartfelt" posts like these is reducing game satisfaction to the perspectives of individual players, not grappling with manifest structural flaws of design and implementation, and dismissing critique as irrational or emotional.

I did say several times that there ARE (many) valid criticisms, but there are equally as many complaints that are very subjective, or just not correct :x. Things like "thanks for the fix but when you are going to make the game FUN," "haha focused feedback was a joke, we all know they don't listen," or "game is dead."

It is entirely one's prerogative to not enjoy the game. That's okay, and I'm not saying everyone has to like it, but just saying "the game is boring," for instance, accomplishes nothing. The game is deliberately a lot of traveling in loneliness between moments of excitement and it's really, really hard to make the game "exciting" to people who don't get that the space travel is just always going to be kind of zen. Like, it wouldn't make sense for someone growing up on modern action films to watch a silent, short cartoon from the early 1900's and say "wow, what a bad movie, it doesn't even have sound.. and it's only 10 minutes...." it is just a different way of doing things and shouldn't be held to the same standards as games that are always exciting like Call of Duty or something.

I am absolutely okay with saying there are things wrong with the game. I think that the current progression focused on ships is fundamentally flawed because if you keep rewards high, allowing casual players to experience all the ship content, that means that players who can grind for 15 hours a day will lose interest after getting all ships in a week, and that's bad for a game with a 10 year roadmap. Likewise, if you make rewards lower, then people who are casual don't get to experience it. And so I think we need a new type of progression content that can scale with the amount of effort you put in and still be rewarding for both kinds of players. For the flak it gets, I think Engineers is a beautiful step in that direction.

I think feedback like this would be nice. I don't know a great solution, but being able to explain why you think something is boring or bad is where we should start; not just drop a "can we please fire this moron sandy?" and hit submit. It just doesn't help anyone y'know?

Quite right Commander and I'm with you. ED is a work of art .. in progress but a work of art.
It's a privilege to live in these times really, the project's formative years. Elite!
