Thargoid Attack in CQC

Hmm... I've never ever played CQC. I think when I started Playing ED back in November there was some issues going on or something and I totally forgot it existed after that.
Is it best to just start in Deathmatch since I have no idea what I'm doing, Or should I be trying to play team death match to be able to learn from others?... or will that anger other players to have to play with the noob-scrub? Is there a rating system that tries to pair equally matched players in a game? I just looked up Exedious's CQC vid and it looks like a lot of fun.

Thargoids are really very caring, after all...

I would suggest you just play. Don't worry too much about what anyone will think. People will know (and understand) that you are a new player. Everyone's got to learn somewhere. There is a rating system, but you would need enough people playing at the same time for it to start sorting players into matches. The matchmaker in Team Death Match sometimes gets it horrbly wrong with a one-sided team. But just as often, there will be a stream of evenly matched games.

Deathmatch is the easiest mode to regularly find a game, as it only requires two players to start a match.
  • There is a regular well-populated Team Deathmatch (in Horizons) every night from around 1830 UTC (in-game time). It is organised primarily by CQC Discord https://discord.gg/p7Ms7Qw7 - Lot's of tips & advice and a very friendly community.
  • Odyssey and Horizons instances are currently separate, so Horizons players cannot queue for the same match as those running Odyssey. We are hoping Horizons 4.0 is the first step in bringing the PC community back together, both for CQC and the Main game.
  • For the last couple of years, you no longer need to access via the Arena option and wait for a match. You can join either of the queue(s) from the main game via the comms panel. once a match is found, a notification will be displayed and you can accept via the same panel. The game will redirect you straight into the Arena Lobby (saving your current position/progress) I find it a nice change of pace, when out exploring.
If you are interested in having a go, here are a few tips I had wish I had known before I started:
  • PIP and Throttle management is extremely important. There are no Engineered Prismatics to sit behind in CQC. 4 PIPS to SYS (x2 shield) is advised whenever taking incoming fire. You may know this already, but putting it into practice in a high pressure situation takes a lot of getting used to. Learn to balance the PIPS so that you recharge/focus the configuration based on the moment e.g. Not taking fire? move PIPS to ENG to turn faster and WPN to recharge your capacitor. Throttle in the Blue when turning to make it even faster.
  • There are 4 maps with fixed Power up locations. Try to familiarise yourself with where they are. There are many different situations where a power up can save you in a fight and there are some very powerful combinations, like Weapons + Stealth (basically gives you a chance to kill a ship before they can even turn to face you) or grabbing a shield in the middle of a fight, just before or after your shields go down.
    • Weapons (Red) provides x2 damage for 45 seconds
    • Stealth (Blue) makes your ship drop off sensors (like silent running) for 30 seconds, but is disabled when you shoot an opponent
    • Shield (Yellow) immediately restores your shields and gives a shield temporary boost (30% I think)
    • Speed (Green) give a very short but very significant boost to all thrusters
  • There are some ridiculously skilled players, so don't get too despondent if you meet one. You will slowly start to improve over time. There is no rebuy in CQC, so you can just keep trying. If what you are doing is not working, try something a little different. Ultimately, practice is what will help you improve.
  • New ship and weapon upgrades become available as you work through up to level 50. The different versions of each ship are the same (they are just a different loadout option). Also whilst there are benefits from unlocking some of the upgrades, you are only talking about small differences e.g. +10% Thermal shield resistance. Engine Focussed Distributor (Better for Engines but worse for Weapons), etc. Not every new option is necessarily better. Experimentation is key to find what works for your flying style.
  • Most fixed weapons like Plasma Cannon do lots of damage, but are very easy to dodge. Bear this in mind when choosing.
  • Finally, if you do see a Thargoid in the Arena, I recommend using the boost button to escape :D

Tried last night (8:30 New York) but it timed out... I'll try that 1830 UTC once the 4.0 base game goes live, hopefully most of the players take the free upgrade/crossgrade, and I'll check out that discord. And I see Steven Gift posted the locations where the games are held, I'm gonna go check it out, I doubt those power-up gates are present in normal space, but it would still be nice to fling a ship around in that super dense asteroid field and maybe that facility is present in normal space. Thank you.
I don't play Star Citizen because it does not have VR, but I have to admit I am really jealous of their 'flight obstacle course' that I see youtubers testing out their flight skills in (I know we have one in the 'training' section of the main menu, but that's only using the basic sidewinder and not a difficult course... would have been nice to try to put my 800m/s iEagle through it though lol)

(edit) Just saw that those battle grounds are 12k and 16k l/y's from the bubble.... might have to just learn the location during a match lol.

i was close during an explo tip & move there - there's nothing in those systems, no signals. But it was in 2020, in Horizons.
Recently (april or may) another cmdr went to those systems, in odyssey, still nothing.

It's quite impressive that even with a bug it could happen at all that arbitrary other ships get into CQC and approximately work - hopefully Frontier do pick up on this and use it to add some extra interest to CQC matches with it. Doesn't have to be Thargoid Interceptors all the time - Thargoid Scouts, or a Corvette with a bunch of turret beams and turret flak for that Freespace 2 experience (one each in TDM?), or something like that.

As this was a confirmed bug which has now been 'patched' by FD and after analysing the instances I had 'goids appear in and the feedback here and on Discord I've loosely concluded that it may be likely I caused the 'goid appearences in CQC Ody when I was playing, as my main ship in ED was (and still is) in HIP 22460 at the time I played these 'appearance' CQC matches (a question asked by people in this post).

Quite a few went looking for 'goids in CQC without luck. There have been no references from any others that they had a ship still in HIP22460 at the time they were playing EDO CQC?.

I played 4 EDO DM matches and 'goids appeared in 3 of them, the first occasion was in the game with @DaftTree as shown in the op. Later that day I jumped in DM again mid-game and was immediately joined by a 'goid swarm (which I took a crummy pic of before the match ended). The final encounter was 2 matches later shown the the vid shot by @cmdr_Giboulot when a 'goid anomalous FSD surge was detected just before the end of the match.

Just out of interest it would be good to know if anyone else actually saw a 'goid in CQC in a match I wasn't in?

This is one of those occasions where a bug actually introduced something that was actually quite cool.
Would be good if FD ever decide to reintroduce 'goids to CQC (along with possible AX loadout options) as it has generated a lot of interest in this mode of gameplay, was a good new angle to the game with added peril, and which could also increase the player base somewhat.

yeah, i was sure you was the ''key'' of all of this. During a time, i wondered if 'goids were not just looking for some red wine ;)
