Thargoid content opt-out?

Only whining I've seen is the pew pew halfwits responding to a well thought out and reasoned query.

Oh good. Thought it was just me.
Yessir we are chock full of keyboard commandos and forum heroes here alright.
All the big talk and e-testosterone makes me go all goosey.

In the beginning, when DBOBE first released Elite out into our world, it was a simple game.
It was the 1980's, the time of Thatcher and Reagans' " Greed is Good" mantra.
Credits/profit were all that mattered.

In-game we earned what little profit we could, through Trade, to ugrade our ships , to help us survive pirate attacks trying to steal what cargo we had.
That was in Normal space.
Whilst travelling within our small in-game universe, we also had the added danger of interdictions by another race, the Thargoids.
They pulled our ships out of hyperspace, into an area known as Witch-space, an area somewhere between where we were and where we really wanted to be.
These encounters were EXTREMELY hazardous for all players. Only the more skilled pilots survived, not necessarilly through combat, running away was a skill in its self.
That was all there was to the game,, make profit, survive.

Fast forward to our time now, 2017, Elite is now what I believe Mr Braben had in mind originally, only with better graphix, a better flight mechanic, and other improvements.
The construction of this Elite admittedly is still in progress, but the basics of the original idea are still there.
At this stage of developement , we are now being introduced to the thargoids, later this year we have been told that the Thargoids will be a feature of the game experience.

I see no basic difference between what we had back in the 1980s to what we have now.
For those of us that waited 30-odd years for the return of the Elite we all loved, this latest version is well recieved.
We are still trading, still running, still fighting, and the Thargoids will bring us full circle to what the game was for us back then.
For those newer players that this Elite is their first encounter with the Thargoids, I say boy-oh-boy are you in for a shock.

Are we afraid?..
We will be...

So, to answer the question Opt out or No,
Thargoids were in the original Elite, no opt out.
Thargoids will be in this version, .. so no opt out either.

Not sure if trolling or a serious question..
What part of the question leads you to suspect trolling?

If you don't like the Thargoids, then there is always the option of refunding the game.
I doubt that option is available since I've been playing since beta. I think Frontier would argue that I've probably had my money's worth.

As previously mentioned, though, the option to stop playing is available, and I'll take it if -- but only if -- the game is turned into something that really doesn't interest me. My original question was an admittedly early attempt at gauging the likelihood of that.

One CRITICAL difference, save and load. At max with a bit of stupidity you would lose a day of play. The potential in this Elite is to lose days upon days upon days of play through in game losses. Like it or not some people just do NOT see that as anything remotely fun.

Oh one more difference "play your way".....turning out to be more and more a load of cobblers every patch/update release! (just checked, that's still there quite prominent on the main page of Elites webpage)

Without wishing to rain on anyone's parade with regard to the 2.4 announcement, can I ask whether the Thargoid content and activities will be forced on everyone, or will there be an opt-out for those of us who don't wish to participate in it?

I would guess that it will be centred initially around the areas of hyperdiction (Pleiades and Maia space). It might spread out from there - I don't know what FD have in store for us - but unless things go very badly for us in the 'war' I doubt it will be a bubble-wide thing. I'm sure FD will have realised that not everyone (probably a sizeable portion of the player-base) will be interested in this, and non-participation will be an option.

I think you are worrying entirely unnecessarily, I hope there will a be a region of no-mans-space with human and thargoid are vying for control of systems as a buffer between the bubble and their home. I'd even like it if there was an invasion with them taking a huge bite out of the bubble itself. But even then there would be a front line beyond which they wouldn't reach. If that happened there would have to be a mechanism for CMDR's to get their ships and modules out to safety, just evacuated automatically to the nearest human shipyard would work. The games never been compulsory pew pew so aside from avoiding war zones or having to snake into a contested system to visit an engineer or something I can't see you getting involved unless you want.

I wouldn't say I was worrying at all, at this stage. More asking for information.

That seems like sound reasoning.

I think there will be areas that thargoid encounters will be very slim, if not non existant like anywhere within the bubble that's not near the outer rim of the human bubble that's closest to the pleiades.

I don't think you'll have to face them if you don't do stuff that's related to them.

Absolutely not. They are an integral part of this game.

I'm in the middle of nowhere but Elite and Thargoids have always been together and playing one without the other is weird and doesn't feel right. Now we know they are coming back ED is starting to feel more complete :)

It must be tempting for FD to just completely eradicate the bubble. We all log in one day and every station is a smoking, acid ripped pile of nothingness and the entire galaxy population consists of players in whatever ship they were in and nothing else. First person to Colonia wins a place to dock.
