Thargoid missiles v point defence

IIRC the missile is too close by the time the PD is effective and so: maybe? But don't go by that its probably wrong...it may not be effective anyway due to missile rate of travel.

Don't think so. Point defence fires fairly fast and the missiles are pretty big and slow, so if they were going to have any affect you would think one would be plenty.

Edit: Sorry, was thinking about caustic missiles. Thargons are way too fast for PD.

AX combat has New rules for Capital class AX CZ...
Swams are not hostile untill you engage them in AX Capital class CZ... Dont bother them, and then they don't bother you..
Caustic missile is not enabled in Horizons as well... So switch back to horizons and you dont need to bother with those at all...

AX bulid with PD, is broken bulid.

Aint is better to bring heatsinks to AX combat, over PD, as utility?

Those missiles are not really hard to outrun (their timer is quite low), and even if one connects, overheating into certain of heat % will burn out caustic effect, and if that is done correctly, only few % of modules health per each "overheat" along very litte hull dmg is lost... like 1% or 2% only.

i dont think you can safely say leave the swarm alone it will leave you alone. it isnt a wasp. i had a rumble at knights this AM, targeted a drone, the swarm would not push off. i didnt fire on it or drive through it. at least i dont think i did. what we need is an adapted point defence. and we need it NOW. again during the session this morning i fired on an interceptor, the swarm did the suicide thing and my 70% of hull was wiped out. i do think that the agression level has been upped so we need a defence . i do like the enahnced gimballed multicannon but unless you can get the scan (ha ha ha) its no good for sniping the hearts. if you got the interceptor targeted the gimballed weapons hit the centre of the interceptor. again. these scans need improving. now. update. dont know why i didnt think of this.... turn off the targeting if you want to tackle the heart with the cannons

The new AX MCs make short work of Scouts though. Maybe pack a Guass Cannon or two for sniping hearts?

But yes, the Xeno scanner needs to be at least double the range and to scan faster too.

The human AX tech needs to be moved out of the "experimental" section (maybe not the new AX guns/missiles, but certainly the previous ones) so that they can ignore the 4 weapon limit and maybe be engineered too - engineering the Xeno scanner for "fast scan" or "long range" would be a definite winner.

if i can ask. i just did a flight with an ecm fitted and where i saw the warning in time, i think maybe it worked against the drone missiles. i didnt seem to do as much with limpets as before. i still got walloped with swarm suicide missiles but that could be bad timing. if somebody else out there could test this? its probably cobblers but if it aint....

I have the 2 CG pd's with 5000m range, they do not work against caustic missiles which is a bit stupid imho.

I managed to target a caustic missile and try and shoot it down with 2 large turreted ax multicannons. Only did about 20% damage to it before it got too close and hit me, which I was really surprised by, seemed to have more hull than a scout

In a chieftain this might be true, but what about a corvette that sits in the thick of it, being fired at from all sides. 2 point defence top and bottom works well. It isn’t broken, it’s just different.

If you need to shoot down the Caustic Missiles from the Interceptors / Scouts, Packhounds and Seekers make quick work of them so you can get back to the fight quicker.

And what's wrong with the PD?
Our PDTs do not work against both Caustic Missiles and Thargon Missiles - they actually do nearly no damage to them at all.

I suspect there is a gameplay reason behind it, though I have trouble figuring out what it is. Maybe to enforce specific loadouts and upgrade chains.
I'm sure there's a gameplay reason, and I think it's very simple. Fighting Thargoids is supposed be different from fighting humans, and caustic damage is a major factor. If you can shoot down caustic missiles too easily with PD, just about the only way you're going to get caustic damage is if you're careless enough to fly through the cloud of a recently killed Thargoid - and that's very easy to avoid even for a second rate pilot like me. Useless caustic missiles means corrosion almost ceases to be a meaningful factor fighting the Thargoids. So in a sense, yes it is to push you to do things differently. Same goes for the Thargoid swarms, and so on.

Even as a mediocre pilot, I can pop into my Corvette and slaughter to my heart's content in a hardcore PvE regular CZ with no chance of death. I may as well have switched on "God Mode" for all the risk I'm at; I'm barely at risk in a Krait 2 or FDL. The Thargoids are supposed to be really tough, and it's a valid design choice that there shouldn't be easy counters to them, you can't shoot down their missiles easily, or scan them from 5 km away and lazily turret/gimbal multicannon their hearts, etc.

Some top players can solo a Hydra, and I salute them for it. With my lower level skills, I can take down a Cyclops or Basilisk with some AI assistance and hard work. That's about right, isn't it? Something for everyone, and a challenge for us average types to make us want to get better.
