Thargoid war : first CG

Quote from Galnet news Aug 25th 3303 :

Professor Cora Shaw, director of the Palin Institute, offered the following assessment:

“We are faced with a number of pressing questions. Why have the Thargoids entered human space? Can we communicate with them? Are they hostile? Hopefully Aegis can provide us with some answers.”

Meanwhile, in an article for the Imperial Herald, journalist Kelvin Masters gave a more frank analysis:

“The barnacles seem to indicate that the Thargoids were in Maia and Merope long before we were. For all we know, humanity has expanded into what the Thargoids see as their territory. I have no interest in scaremongering, but my belief is that a Thargoid attack could be imminent.

The first CG.

Large amounts of Thargoid related data are held at the Palin institute in Maia, along with artifacts.
We must defend the institute from the Thargoids for at least 48 hrs in order to remove as much material as possible.
Use any means, and your ship and self are considered expendable in order to achive this.
2 parts
Part 1: traders must land at Palin's site, load up with material supplied , then make it out of the thargoid bubble back to human space to a designated system.
Part 2 : Combat ships must escort traders, and/or shoot down as many thargoids as possible.(if possible) or just delay any thargoid attacks on the traders.

Any human ship attacking another human ship engaged in this CG will be marked as a collaborater by the pilot's federation and will therefore be banned from landing in any but anarchy systems.

Ok so this may not be what Fdev have in mind, but heck... it could be fun.. if handled correctly

Anyone else got any ideas?

Bill

Any negativity or hate or whining or attempts to whinge about Fdev and their approach I'll ask for this thread to be locked.
Its for community ideas only (and no silly ones either ;))

No silly ideas like quilt a gigantic welcome-hanky or deliver politicians (in escape pods) from all over the galaxy for Tharg breakfast or deliver slaves for Tharg welcome party? Damn' I am out then ;-)

But I like your idea OP! This would be something fresh.

My gut feeling from how the Thargoids operated in the original game (which I have recently been replaying on the Amiga) is that they will hit 10 plus systems at once - I suspect we will be involved in various "battle's of the line" (Babylon 5) or the Wolf 359 battle (Star Trek) at various key systems in an attempt to stop encroachment on the "bubble". We will most likely get some sort of utility mount from engineers that will partially negate the effect of Thargoids ability to render us dead in the water, but it will only be partly effective - so like when your srv is trying to enter one of the Thargoid ships on the ground. This saves the need for lot's of "new" anti Thargoid kit right away (though that could come in time as well).
How effective such a utility mount will be, might be determined by some form of cg leading up to it's creation - similar to how we now only have 2 ton anti-corrosive cargo holds available.

So you basically want 2.4 The Reskin?

RESKINNED community goals now featuring Thargoids!

RESKINNED conflict zones now featuring Thargoids!

RESKINNED rngeers now featuring anti-Thargoid modules and weaponry making your previous grind painfully obsolete!

FDev - Having No Respect for your Time since 1994

Ughhh so depressing.

Wow. Insulting FDev because someone from the community suggested something.

Why would you want to exclude any inter human conflict? It is what has defined us as a species since Caine and the one who didn't make it.

That sounds like a CG I would participate in. Rep++

Lately, I've gotten bored with the CGs and haven't done one for several months.

Well lets put it this way

Pretend you're french, and its 1940 and you're defending france .. how would you feel about fellow frenchmen helping the germans out?
Be nice and kind to them? give them a cup of tea?... or line them up against a wall and shoot 'em?

Bill

And I wish some people would read everything I said about whining and ing..... :(

So, you don't want "material gathering" community goal, because this would be a "reskin".
You don't want combat CGs, because this would be a reskin.
A "bring me data" CG would also be a reskin.
I guess, you don't want a community goal at all.

Well then ... Thargoid combat zones would be reskinned standard combat zones, conventional data gathering would be reskinned scan missions, free fights with Thargoids would be reskinned pirat encounters.

So, can you please enlighten me, which brand new, never seen game loops you actually envision? What should FDev implement in order to satisfy your desire for never before experienced gameplay?

(By the way ... the OP actually suggests two new and never seen before CG ideas: the "rescue as much material as possible" CG would feature the opposite "direction" than the common material gathering CG. And the proposed combat CG is a sort of "king of the hill" or "last man standing" idea, also different to the currently known combat CGs. I like your ideas, William!)

yet you know this is what is coming.

How about diplomatic GC or WW2 style leaflet drop, along the lines of :
-you are given information at the CG station
-Go and find a thargoid (possibly at a pre determined location)
-Transmit data to thargoid using the new scanner thingy in the ship (or a new piece of hardware)
-Repeat
Anti thargoid human / npc players try to stop you, pro ones protect you and carry out the delivery.

There is no need for FD to invent hot water here, all the tools to interact with thagoids are already in game.

The same gamey tools we've called lackluster and have been hoping are just placeholders for two+ years.

No, I don't believe the game is in any way ready to introduce the Thargoids in a compelling manner, the tools aren't there. Who really wants more of the same USS, CZs and CGs which all rub in your face the fact you're just playing with mechanics rather than really interacting with an immersive game world?

Yeah I like the OP idea.

However aren't there supposed to be 2 lots of Thargoids and then there's the guardians - maybe it won't be a simple Us Vs Them thing. (Well we can hope).

Not sure about the French war references dear chap.

Well it was the first example I could think of

I could have used the American revolution in 1776, or the situation in Spain in 1809-1812, or Vietnam during the wars there from 1945-1975, or even the the events
in Britain during oct 2027*

As for the details of there being various sorts of Thargoids (and gawd help us if the guardians are still around with their preference for biological warfare ), well thats
upto Fdev and their master plan for the game, but they did say that their master plan could be changed by in game events...

Bill

*oops you're not supposed to know about that one yet ...
