The Achievement Suggestion & Discussion Thread

ED is now on Steam and it’s coming to Xbox One. Both of which support some form of achievement system. Achievements or Trophies or Secondary Missions or Awards or Medals or Accomplishments or Bucket List or whatever you would like to call them, can offer additional challenges or goals to those seeking more out of their game. They can encourage players to try different things, both for new players and veterans alike and can provide a sense of satisfaction on completing them.

There has been no official confirmation if ED will include achievements at this stage, except this post from Michael which doesn’t necessarily rule it out either:
Not immediately, but we'll see.

Michael

Confirmed List of XBox Achievements: http://www.xboxachievements.com/game/elite-dangerous/achievements/

Two elements for discussion in this post:

1) POLL : What is your preference regarding Achievements being introduced into ED? Is it something that you feel would enhance your experience, do you have no feeling on either way or is it something you feel would be a negative to your experience?

Some Considerations Raised:

- Platform Independent (work on Standalone PC/Mac, Steam, XBox versions etc).
- Option to Disable if Player doesn't want them.
- Minimal Impact (Only text via chat/info panel).
- More Content is Good.
- Should not Encourage Anti-Social behavior.
- Lore based only &/or In-game mechanics only (such as ranks, milestones)
...

2) COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT SUGGESTIONS : On the event that achievements do proceed at some stage, I thought it would be fun to brainstorm with the community on some possible achievements that you would like to see in the game.

I personally like the more creative achievements over the more grindy achievements, but in a game like ED I think there is room for both. I also think ED could offer some hard achievements for long term players along with the more accessible ones for the casual player.

Share your suggestions!

Please include a title/name for your achievement (be creative!) and a clear statement of what would be required to get it.

If you have a better name/title for an existing achievement let us know, likewise if you think any of them could be refined/improved.

I will add any good ones raised in the thread I will add to the master list:

I'm neutral, but I know people that love steam achievements, and that extends their play time and enjoyment. So I would think FD have this in mind somewhere down the line maybe.
Nice start, have some rep !

I have never ever seen the point of these achievements and I just ignore them. I'd rather not see them because Elite is supposed to be all about setting your *own* achievements and goals. Too many people play the game to be "get a fully loaded Anaconda = game won" already.

I know I can ignore them as I always do but by adding them you are lowering the game to certain type of instant gratification gameplay and that would further suggest that future developments take it that way instead of into it's own direction.

I voted "no" but my opinion is more than just a simple "No".

It's more like - if we ever add "achievements" (badges, tokens etc) then make them mean something. Not something stupid like "Bought your first Eagle" or "Filled up your gas tank" kind that is so prevalent in Steam achievements now.

If they are along the lines of "travelled 50,000 LY from <SOL>" or "Fully scanned a system with more than 30 bodies" etc, they'd really mean something. Those, I would be ok with, and may even try to get some of those.

An "achievement" needs work and persistence to get - not simply just money.

ps: "Landed with 1 second left of Oxygen left" would be a cool achievement that is funny too. But I bet commanders would start breaking their own canopies and sitting outside stations waiting for the clock to tick down before making a final dash into the station(s).

I would like to see one achievment: "Master Explorer - You scanned every body in every system in the Galaxy" :D

To be a bit more serious: I really don't care about that stuff, but they are being there dosn't effect me in any way so why not? Other people might care, so they can have them if they want.

I just don't see the point and if existing non steam players dont get a steam key it would be a sure way to alienate them - especially given the strong sentiment on the topic. It could work however and its an easy way of creating content out of nothing. Who knows.

No I wouldn't want that at all - I mentioned that in my post actually. If they did add challenges or achievements I think it should be available any way you wish to play, including direct without Steam.

They could be relatively low profile addition. Perhaps a simple message in your chat or info boxes. Only browsable from the menu and not via in-game panels. That wouldn't impact those that do not like such things as much.

Thanks for sharing your points of view everyone.

I have no interest in seeing these in game and voted no, but if it was something I could switch off or a tab i could avoid looking at, then I would not object to it being there for those who want it.

One thing to add to this thread though - I personally think that whoever managed to dock at Hutton Orbital really deserves an achievement :)

I enjoy reading them, but never understood the need for them

Though the scan every star in the galaxy one... would be amusing to be included if we have achievements...

Nice one!

How about something like:

Hutton Bumper Sticker - You completed the courier mission to Hutton Station on time and all you got was this lousy sticker!

I think it was a courier mission .. if memory serves.

:)

Hell yes!! I even approve custom titles like Chief Commander for military players and stuff.

Elite can never have enough content.

I'm not someone who goes around doing achievements just because they exist, but I've always liked it when I get one (I have a lot of Steam games and play WoW, but at most have only got 10-15% of those available.) I don't see them as a distraction or anything bad, and the list the OP made has a lot I'd love to get just for the description.
.
So, a couple of suggestions from me, both Explorer (as that's what I'm doing right now):
Exploratron: Scan a complete system over 2000LY away from SOL, with every available ship type.
Maximum Warp!: Make a maximum possible distance jump with your current ship. (ie 28LY+ in a Hauler, 40LY+ in an Asp etc)
.
Have Fun,
Jintosh
