The Art of War - Duels to the Death in ED

I favor the term "Gladiator"

What about, in certain systems, players being somehow able to coerce other players into gladiatorial combat or face being certainly destroyed? If they win they gain their freedom, or if enough of them band together they can overthrow their captors?

We already have Slavers in canon. I don't think it's too far of a jump from there. There's all sorts of possibilities :)

ok, lets say, this would exist. so the slaves should be founded with a ship and if they win with a slightly better one, until they made enough money to buy them free? well this wouldn't be my first character i would play, but an alternative would do, so you could choose what type of game you want to play.

sounds good to me.

Not quite - those players in their own ships entering a system they should not be in could be captured, if they are foolish enough to go without proper precautions (i.e a lot of heavily armed buddies!)

It's just an idea which will probably never happen, but a quick look at human history certainly shows precedents.

For example, you hyperspace into a new system, only to find Bubba's Love Dungeon. You were silly enough to go without friends, and now Bubba has caught you, disabled your hyperdrive (or simply removed all your fuel) and now you are stranded at Bubba's whim.

Even worse, all the ice cream has run out.

Now Bubba is generous enough to give you a choice. Either fight at Bubba's pleasure, and maybe win freedom, or wait until more ice cream arrives. Or somehow hope someone else arrives to rescue you. However, if they don't come prepared too - you can probably expect to fight them over the ice cream :(

Given the size of a solar system, the idea that it can be controlled by a group of players is very unlikely to be achieved.

Similarly, if the *only* way to play E: D in multi-player mode is to play in a large group then the magic of the original will be lost, i.e. the "One pilot, one ship" appeal of the original game.

In adding multi-player to the Elite concept, I trust FD to take care that the game can still be enjoyed as a single pilot. Note that I said "enjoyed" not "played" - if there is no enjoyment as a single pilot in the multi-player galaxy then players will more than likely chose to play solo-online.

I think it would be quite fun to have a small section of the galaxy where everyone has the same ship and you can have say a twenty minute fight. If you die you respawn in. The system keeps your kill score and then you can have rankings etc.

Apart from the fact that one already exists - Shinrarta Dezhra (the Founders system)

For gladiatorial combat though - players could just arrange to meet in a suitable location in an Anarchy system at a suitable time.

Who says the players control the founders system? Naming it and starting there doesn't count as control, how much influence will we have?
Even thousands of players shouldn't count for much in a realistically scaled and heavily populated area.

All this talk of player control makes me think people are wanting or expecting a scaled down universe, I sincerely hope we don't get that (still have nightmares about the 10 house "cities" in skyrim)

Player influence yes, but not control.

players will never control a systen cause of the big npc battleships, which can't be player owned.

Well, that wouldn't be a "career" - no specific rep points or income source. It is somewhat like the difference between duels and arena/battleground combat in MMOs.

I really love this 'class' because that's what me and my alliance are going to hunt down. The more targets the better.

let the PvP roll on ;)

+1

Maby as stated earlier their could be a kind of contest ... say like boxing but then in big metal shinning machines ... not to the death ofcourse.

Maby in a system that allowes gambling :)

Then the person competing in those contests can even earn a little credit.
Or pay a lot to repair his ship if he loses.

I'd be all for running into someone every now and then that does a good REAVER impersonation...Specially if they play those creepy transmissions over voice comms... ;)

CORRECTION: maybe, there could be a so called control of an anarchic sector by a clan, cause it has the overall presence everywhere in that sector, but it would not really own it by game mechanics. it would be still anarchic.
