Hi Guys,

As there is now a discussion building on the Avegant do you want me to pull the posts and create a seperate thread for it?

So the rainbow artefacts aren't due to refraction? This means that the narrow colour band of lasers aren't going to cure that problem? But I take it that lasers are still the answer, whether it's strobing in a mixture of lasers before updating the mirror array, or having an array fine enough to have separate elements for each colour.

This doesn't just affect VR though, It means that the Avegant could make a pig's ear of action movies. The headset would be best for viewing still photographs and Woody Allen movies. How come no one reviewing this headset has said anything about this?

How about you two lovely ladies watch the video links I provided in the above post. The guys at C-Net had a good play with the Glyph and it wasn't found wanting with the issues be spoken about in the above. No "pigs ear of movies or fast moving games or colour fringing" as you'll see in the video clip.

As for death threats over the FB take over, that's bloody ridiculous. Be upset, disappointed by all means but threatening people? Utterly stupid.

Think I've got most of the posts discussing the Glyph.

Let me know if I've missed any.

I'm really curious about the Glyph, especially because of no eye strain and this idea of projecting the image into your retina sounds great, but how does it really "look" like?
I'd love to demo one of those units before purchase :(

So the rainbow artefacts aren't due to refraction?

In day to day life, rainbow artefacts are almost always caused by a process known as "diffraction" which is closely related to refraction.
I believe you brits had a great scientist who dabbled quite a bit with this back in the day. ;)

It would be unfair to poke a camera into the Glyph to get an eye view of the headset. I really doubt the picture I saw on those videoclips was from the Glyph itself. The girl didn't address the issue of colour fringing and the bloke in the other video said that his eyesight wasn't good enough to see the image.

I'm not saying that the picture quality will be bad. I'm just saying that the method they're using could result in a pig's ear. Some people aren't bothered by this type of distortion. For me, the only way I'll know for sure is when I stick my head in the headset and use my own eyeballs to experience the picture.

Do you know for sure? Have you tried out the headset?

I got a bit scared when you pointed out my mistake. I thought for a second that the DLP mirror was acting as a diffraction grating, which might be quite hard to fix. It's not what was happening with these DLP projectors.

The key part is
Today however, systems with DLP’s BrilliantColor technology have virtually eliminated any of the color breakup that was sometimes seen on older DLP projectors. Studies have long shown that only a small number of people ever experience the phenomenon

So that's good news, if they've managed to use BrilliantColor in these headsets. :)

I don't really understand the "ultra high detail" - isn't it 720p per eye? That's like 1.8Mp (total) right? And 1080p spread over 2 eyes is 2Mp, no? So is 720p (1280x720 per eye) better than 1080p (960x1080 per eye) for both eyes. I can imagine why it could be seeing as horizontal resolution is probably more important than vertical as that is how our vision works. Although I just closed one eye and isn't the vision from one eye alone just a circle? :S

I hear you Jabokai, I'll just let Ed Tang the CEO Avegant explain what I meant.

Frank, nope don't have one yet, haven't used it. Still, that said I'll more than likely be placing a pre-order for one this week. :)

Okay, so it seems fine for what it is (although I'm not sure why they talk about an 80" screen equivalent, and it not being a replacement for your primary TV, and then show a diagram of a man sitting in front of a 50 foot screen!) but it's not what I'm looking for and not going to compete with the VR systems for PC... as the guy himself says, it's for media consumption and mobile gaming. I'm only really interested in full VR at this stage... and it seems pretty expensive too. Good luck to them though... the more toys out there the better!

I must be getting old. I don't remember starting this thread? :p I thought I posted this in the occulus rift thread. Is this a Frankensteinian modded thread? Or maybe I should cut back on the middle in the night forum postings? :D
Edit: Ah ok just saw T.J. post :)

Anyway, some cross posting from reddit:
Open Source/SF con Penguicon's got a panel discussing this mess in May, with Ernie Cline (author of sci-fi VR book Ready Player One), John Scalzi (sci-fi author) and Gameface Labs (creator of the Android-based wireless VR headset you listed).

Here is some info about the True Player Gear that announced shortly after the facebook deal. They have probably rushed to announce it for obvious reasons. Haven't even read this fully yet but sounds interesting:

So, anyways, I'm a Kickstarter for the Glyph, and an Elite player... Are there any more out there? We may (well maybe) see them before Christmas, so it'd be great to start putting our heads together and seeing what sort of experience we might get with the Glyph on Elite.

OK, so it's not immersive, but I have an imagination so that's OK, and besides I like the idea of being able to still see the keyboard and joysticks.

We do know it has head tracking, so question 1: "How easy will it be to integrate the Glyph head tracking into Elite"

Question 2: "Will the 3D work, "out of the box" or will we need dev"

Question 3: erm... your turn... assuming there is anyone else out there....

Any news on compatibility with ED? The Glyth looks to be the very best at only $699 if only it was in full immersion (not see the keyboard)

Very best? For quick and easy watching of a music video maybe but the specs and it's design are in no way any kind of competition for the Vive and Rift - it's just a media consumption device. Maybe a very good one, I don't know, but it's not the same kind of animal as the Vive/Rift. Be wary if you're thinking of buying it for any other purpose than it's billed as.

The Glyph is "not a virtual reality product," says co-founder Edward Tang. "It’s a premium media product. If you want to consume media on the go, this is the device for you."

Yes, as a backer, I absolutely agree. Not really a VR product.

HOWEVER...

We manage to gain a sense of immersion with just one monitor, well I do anyway... and I figure that it is still worth trying to get the best out of the Glyph for gamining. I know that's not what it's primarily for, but for me I suspect some advantage to only partial immersion (e.g. I can still see the keyboard, and my brain will probably get more "reality this way up" messages - which I hope means more time in the SRV without needing sick bags...

Anyway... if ANYONE else gets one, let me know and we'll explore! :)
