Ships The Best Ship of 2018

Greetings,

I think the Alliance Chieftain is going to be the most popular combat oriented ship in the game for 2018. Why? It appears to have been the first ship designed to fully integrate with the beyond 3.0 update for a perfect platform to design your custom version. The weapons convergence is right on and any weapon in the arsenal will work. If one is starting out with pulse lasers and multi-cannons to you are really good with PAs, rail guns and frag cannons this toy will work. You are a missile attack a settlement player you are going to love this. Stock there are no real limitations on power and can change those pulse lasers to beams. It has the power, thrusters, FSD, distributor, maneuverability, shields etc with no real loss we have to compensate with other ships in the past.

Add in engineering and it is going to get crazy. A combat setup with lots of hull and module reinforcements, shields, boosters etc still gets a 19 LY jump range. With the new Engineering I'm hitting 61.1 percent on the FSD jump range with a hardened combat ship with a 30+ LY jump range. Only 11 jumps across the bubble from one Engineer to another. C3 DD thrusters hit 386/482 M/S. Only a C1 power plant upgrade and I have more power than I really need.

The one negative is that it uses fuel unlike a Python which is much more efficient. An Explorer will need a fuel tank. A 4A fuel scoop takes a lot more time versus a 5A but I keep the 5A shields for combat. I think that the point was this ship was designed along with the Beyond 3.0 update to show off what is possible. Sneaky these Frontier Devs...You decide.

Regards

Considering that we're only at the start of the third month in 2018 and more ships are coming this year, this is a bold statement.

Possibly agree per the unknown but since this is the first ship actually dialed into the game at the current level one does wonder what the next one will be...

I've been a fan of it since my first flight in the beta :-D

This ship is the one i've been waiting since the beginning of Elite Dangerous years ago, a "long range heavy fighter"

It still drifts a little too much but we can figure it out with experience (sometimes with a weird movement), and the shield is not that great but everything else is alright especially the weapons.
I have engineered 95% of the ship and while the FAS/FdL seems easier to handle in combat, i still prefer it for the weapons, the jump range and the perfect cockpit.

Now i'd like a Metallic skin and kits please :)

Agree. My ship is naked.

I've bought one, and even a total non-combatant like me can have fun with it. I use it in my home system for 1-2 hours a week, just popping threat level 1-2. It's nice to look at and fly with good firepower.
It's one of those ships that looks and flies like what it is supposed to be.

My humble opinion is that Federal Gunship is actually better on paper, possibly on flight, too.

And thanks to 3.0 engineering, rolls don't make too much of a difference now. (Chieftain do have the potential to jump further though)

I'm assuming the next ship will be the Krait, which I am really looking forward to. Not too bothered about the Cheiftain myself, but the Krait looks great.

Agreed, the Chieftain is really going to be hard to beat this year. The great jump range along with its being a great combat ship makes it very versatile. I usually alternate between an Aspx and an FDL; since I don't explore, the Chieftain could replace both. However, the outline of its image on the HUD is somewhat irritating. I can't help feeling I am flying a Kermit the Frog sock puppet.

Sigh.......

Meh. The canopy just cracked reading this. I've already dubbed mine "waste o'money". Not impressed. I know I'm in the minority but I don't think it's that great looking. Fun to fly, but after fully engineering it, I find it disappointing. I'll stick with my Vulture/FDL/FGS/T10 for combat scenarios.

I agree. Three jumps and you are out of fuel...

Yeah, I am starting to think that the Chieftain may not be so great because the canopy seems really fragile. This evening my canopy cracked once and then later was reduced to twenty percent whilst bounty hunting. Hull was hardly nicked. And the ship, although not maxed out, is fully grade 5 engineered. And I do my best to avoid jousting. My FDL only cracks after I lose a ton of hull. And that happened only three times in six months of playing(I only PvE). Well, maybe I better git gudder.

I was dissapointed too. Out of the box, nimble enough, but not enough cargo space to be a good mission runner and not enough punch or shields to be a good combat ship.
I owned one for about 2 hours and tested it in a haz res and its pretty weak and a good hard sneeze blows out the canopy. Maybe a rival for the FAS and new players will have another option in that range, but not for me.

OP if I may ask, which paint is that? It's so beautiful.

(White is my favorite color for cars and ships)

That is Tactical Ice. Looks pretty good on lots of ships. I often use it on Empire ships (already white) so that the fleet matches.

As for looks that is always an individual perception. Looking at the Chieftain it reminds me a lot of the styling with the early Lotus Esprit and Lamborghini Countach back when corners were square and defined. Today everything is typically rounded off. Maybe it's that 'older look' that some feel outdated and do not like.
