Community Event / Creation The Buckyball Racing Club Presents: Back to Pareco (Magic 8-Ball Championship, Race 1)

ufxeIcz.png

Welcome to Back to Pareco! Like the original, Full Throttle at Pareco, this is a Buckyball time-trial race. It's also the first of eight fan-favorite races in a series - the Magic 8-Ball Championship - to determine who is the biggest, baddest, buckyball-iest racer in the entire galaxy.

RACE INFORMATION
Start Date:
0001 UTC on Saturday, 12 February 3308
End Date: 2359 UTC on Sunday, 20 February 3308
Eligibility: The race is open to all Commanders, on any platform, in any game version (Odyssey or Horizons).
Classes: There are two race classes that you can enter:

Unlimited: You can run in any small or medium ship you like, engineered as much as you like
Regulation Cobra: You must use an un-engineered Cobra Mk III outfitted as described here.
Note: The closest location to purchase a Regulation Cobra plus all required modules should be McCulley Gateway in Meticuli, 19.23 ly from Pareco
The closest location with a Li Yong-Rui discount should be Papin City in 7 Andromedae, 52.25 ly from Pareco
Also Note: Since you won’t need the hard points, Cargo Racks or Planetary Vehicle Hanger for this race, feel free to power them off.
Course: The race takes place around the circuit of 6 stations located approx. 11kls from the main star in the Pareco system. And since we're going back to Pareco, we're going to run the race in REVERSE ORDER from the original!
Garden Ring >> Crown Orbital >> Asire Dock >> Webb Station >> Philips Market >> Neville Ring >> Garden Ring >> (continue loop)
Sponsor: This race is being sponsored by CMDR MalForTheWin and the Dogs of Lore Squadron / PMF / Community.

RUNNING THE RACE

  1. To begin the race, get your ship on the landing pad at Garden Ring, rotated for departure and ready to launch.
Note: Competitors in the Regulation Cobra MKIII class should take one or more screenshots of their modules (or show them on video) JUST PRIOR to starting the race to prove they have the correct loadout. Make sure the clock is visible.
  2. Wait for a suitable time on the station services clock (I would suggest a time just as the seconds hit "00"), and take an in-cockpit screenshot with the clock clearly visible.
  3. LAUNCH!!!
  4. Now, fly to and land at each of the other stations around the Pareco ring in the following order:
Garden Ring >> Crown Orbital >> Asire Dock >> Webb Station >> Philips Market >> Neville Ring >> Garden Ring >> (continue loop)
  5. Take another screenshot each time you land (making sure the clock is clearly visible in each one).
  6. Keep going around this circuit (in the given order) until 20 minutes have elapsed.
  7. When your 20 minutes are up, continue on to a final landing at whichever station is next.
  8. Take a last and final screenshot when the station services menu appears.

SUBMITTING YOUR RUN
Once you have your set of screenshots (Note: a video of the run is also acceptable), upload them as an album to a suitable image sharing website (people often use IMGUR for this) and fill in the following web form to complete your submission for the race:

RACE SUBMISSION FORM
Fill out this form to submit your run. Remember, you can submit more than one run - keep trying for your best attempt!

SELECTING THE WINNER
The winner will be the person who makes the largest number of stops around the circuit in the allotted time, and, as a tie breaker for commanders making the same number of stops, the one with the lowest elapsed time over the 20 minutes to their final screenshot.

I will be maintaining scoreboards for the two race classes in this forum thread throughout the event. You can enter the race as many times as you like over the course of the event, so if you want to make an attempt at improving on your run, then go for it!

Good luck, CMDRS!

FAQ
Q) What happens if I land just seconds before the 20 minutes are up?
A) As long as you can get a landing screenshot showing less than 20 minutes since your start then launch again and continue on to the next station before taking your final screenshot.

Q) What happens if I visit the stations in the wrong order?
A) Only the stations visited in the correct order will count towards your run. Any visited out of order will be discounted. Remember to keep reciting the mantra - "Garden, Crown, Asire, Web, Phillips, Neville."

Q) I keep getting messages saying I need to be closer to request docking permission, what gives?
A) Because the Pareco stations are all so close to each other, the traffic control system can get confused about which station you're requesting permission to land at. Make sure you have the right station selected in the Contacts list!

Q) The instant I jump into supercruise I get the safe to drop back out again message, what gives?
A) Again, because the stations are all so close to each other they're all within each other's safe drop zone. Once you've engaged supercruise give it a second or two before trying to disengage again. If you're too quick off the mark it is possible to drop back at the station you just left.

Q) What happens if I buy the farm (i.e. crash and burn) during my run?
A) I'm afraid the run is over and you will need to start again (this is a relatively short race so let's keep things simple).

Q) Do I need to run in Open mode? (I've heard you guys like that)
A) I'm not going to mandate that runs must be done in Open mode but, as with all Buckyball Races, I will recommend it. Chances of being ganked during a race are relatively slim (you're meant to be going fast after all plus this race provides almost zero interdiction opportunity) and you never know who you might bump into during a run (sometimes quite literally). With luck a few people will be trying this and racing alongside someone else can be a lot of fun. Note that two of the stations are outposts so there is a danger of having to wait for landing pads. If that becomes a real problem for you then by all means switch to PG or Solo.

Q) Why can't I do my Unlimited run in a large ship?
A) Because two of the stations are outposts which you wouldn't be able to land at.

Fantastic! Here we go ... the Magic 8 Ball championship is off with race #1 in very safe hands by the look of it. Brilliant stuff @MalForTheWin, I approve of EVERYTHING. :)

P.S. you might want to edit FAQ #2 as the stations are no longer in alphabetical order (actually, I'm not sure they ever were).

Oh, and consider me signed up! Classes, ships and names yet to be decided ... but I will be there!

P.P.S. I'm going to make this clearer later today in the main Magic 8 Ball forum thread but it's our intention that those of you racing in the regulation class Cobra will be using the same ship (perhaps with minor outfitting tweaks as required by individual race rules) throughout the entire championship.

Regulation Cobra - "1 of 8"
Hmmm, so you're wilfully planning to flaunt the rules before we've even started and have your nameplate resprayed after every race? And ignoring the intended "alteration of your regulation Cobra" I dread to think of the paperwork that's going to cause when the championship clerks prepare the regulation leaderboard and see Sulu in eight different Cobras! All I'm saying is don't blame me if some of your championship points get lost!

Training Officer Lt. Olanrewaju Ozolinsh escorted the newly minted airman to their first duty station: the docking assist tower at Pad 19. "... so just follow the instructions of the ATC officer, keep one eye on the holofax from the ship you're guiding and the other on the actual docking cylindar, and just like the training simulations bring your ship to a safe and maj..."

The ATC officer's voice interrupted his instructions. "Alert! Alert! Code Azure Detected! Stevenson Slam incoming! ETA: 1 minute, 52 seconds!"

Airman Veronika Wibowo looked at her instructor. "Code Azure? Stevenson Slam? What are those? I don't recognize those codes, sir."

"Those are particular to MacKenzie Relay, airman. Stevenson Whirlwind Adventures specializes in adrenaline tours, so their ships fly rather recklessly. Commander Stevenson in particular likes to use station infrastructure as a net to stop her ships. Take your station, bring our pad's shield generator off standby, and be ready bring it to full if our pad is selected to catch her."

"Roger that." The young airman hurried to her duty station, relieving the current airman on duty. She didn't notice the mischievous wink the older man gave her TO on his way out. "Shields off standby, capacitors charging, standing by for full power."

"Pad 19, this is Control. Standby for Stevenson Slam. ETA: 30... damn! She's early! Contol out!"

The new DPC paused, "Sir?"

"SWA 006, this is ATC."

"Shields up! Brace for impact!"

"You are confirmed to land on Pad 19. Please obey traf..."

With a barely suppressed scream, Airman Wibowo found herself trying to burrow into the back of her chair as a ship she didn't have time to identify shot between a Type-9 on the way out and an Orca on the way in and streaked right towards her. With a cacophony of stressed metal and clashing shields, the now altogether much too close Imperial Courier bounced off her tower, and settled itself on the docking pad, magnetic clamps securing the ship with a solid "thunk."

"fic... nevermind. ATC Out."

As his trainee glanced uncertainly over her shoulder at him, Lt. Ozolish reached for the communications system. "ATC, this is Pad 19. Confirm identity of ship and speed of approach. Over."

"Pad 19, this is ATC. Ship confirmed to be 'Elegance of Virtue.' Speed of approach... 852 m/s? Confirmed. 852 m/s. Over."

"ATC, this Pad 19. Copy that. Pad 19 out. Gods damn it. I'm going to have to rewrite the Azure protocols again. That woman is a menace."

Just a little word of caution to all those enthusiastic flyers out there in the unlimited class superwagons. If you have dumped your FSD drive for a tiny thing that would not jump over a puddle then take a note of caution. While testing enthusiastically I sort of rammed a ship or two. This resulted in the ship exploding, which in my line of work is quite normal.
This does not bother me in the least and I expect to lose many. What I did not account for is being jailed. I rebought my ship and then found out that there was no way in hell that ship could get back to Pareco from the detention centre. Had to transport a suitable ship over then fly back and then transport my racer back again. One hour wasted. Just a little wisdom from the Sulu school of stupid.

Excellent. I cannot believe how quickly we are here, but here we are and I'm really looking forward to this. I'm going to be using my second account because I can't guarantee how long before I need to go exploring again :)

Stating my intent to race

:D I look forward very much to following Stevenson Whirlwind Adventures

Well final testing has been done. My little Eagle will do what I ask of it as long as I take it by the scruff of the neck and drag it round with very little in the way of gentle. Oh its gonna be a laugh is this.

Exiting whitchspace in 7 Andromedae. Turning off my flight assist Modules watch Galflix modules to warm up for the race week. Never too late to take good habits, right ? But damn... that procedural medical holo is so addictive! Maybe it's because it's written like a cop show? Maybe it's because the main character is just as much as a jerk as I am ? Dunno, but taking a break from it will probably do me some good, I pop episodes just like he pops pills!

7.5kms, Pad 6... Couldn't get better whatever I asked the flight regulator. They don't know me here... no bother, I am just here for the discount. If we were racing here, they'd learn to give me pad 13 just to save time and saliva. 13? Yeah, just like in the holo, whoever thought of a character called by a number ? And that was written wayyyy before that NMLA Theta seven thing happened.

CLANK ! "Docking complete, solid approach". Yeah, right, your sarcasm isn't all lost on me. Is it like a flight operations control joke ? They always go for it when I am ed at my landing. Looking forward to never hearing that one again after "polishing" Pareco's pads so much my landing gear will just slide. Well, that's if I manage to get better at it of course.

Ok, The Buckyball Racing Club handed us a pretty shopping list, let's see...
Hardpoints : skip, Utility mounts : skip, wait a sec, frag cannons? We have to use hardpoints... Hardpoints?! HARDWHATS?!!? Have they lost all racing sanity?
I haven't seen the detail of the 8 races yet, they must have found some use for it, but I'd feel lighter without that kind of implements. As if 2 frags were going to do me any good in a fight? They want to see me shooting something? A fly by Maybe? Or it's just for the mass repartition of the ship... I'll have to remember to ask them.

Hum ok, 3D Power plant, 9MW is too much, right? How much juice do these frags need anyway?
4D Thrusters... 4 D ? Isn't this supposed to be a racing ship? Damn, they'll probably want us to make the best of the FSD. What did they pick? 4A, that confirms it, there must be a multi jump race at some point. With that power plant, I could have fitted 4A thrusters in exchange for point something of a light year of range. Yes .69 ly to be exact, sometimes that must mean doing an extra jump, but it ALWAYS makes your speed better.

Oh, they also included a fuel scoop, 4B. Well, I'll have to check the fuel consumption, because they purposely didn't put a 4A just to force me to make the most of those pesky jumps. Well, that at least I don't have to learn, but I believe I haven't ever used a B class. Not hat it matters, it's just inefficient on purpose to show that I can be. Challenge accepted. I'll probably even fare better with the 4D Thrusters and giganormous fuel tank anyway.

Hum, the rest seem pretty stan ... Hey ! Wait a minute, 4A life support ? How many extra tons is that one gonna cost me? Hmm, nevermind, I heard of that one. Takes your breath away right? Turn off your life support and fly. Seems nice, except I won't ear the engines that well. At least the countdown is going to be exciting. Hum, I'll go and save some fuel and turn it off for the elttorht lluf oceraP ! I'll get used to it and it'll give me my "stop time" at every pressurized station.

Shields, 3D, sure... 2 tons of bumpers, I wouldn't survive without them. Good thing Dynamic Shielding doesn't sponsor the championship, the Bi-weave are a bit on the heavy side. Sure, they recharge quite well, almost as fast as a Thargoïd but after all, I not supposed to hit anything, supposed being the opperative word, yes I know.

Oh ! They kept the best for last : SRV Hangar. Last time I tried to handle one, that was in Napier, but they are hell to fly without (VR) that omnidirectionnal seat. I'll do my best, but how do they say?
Yeah, I remember now... "Crashing is just the Buckyball way. If you don`t crash you ain`t trying."
Not the official Club motto I think... Isn't that "There is fast and then there is Buckyball" ?

OH, and I shoudn't forget to buy an SRV at some point. For now the empty bay just looks better, as well at the empty cargo rack. It gives a streamlined touch to the whole!

Seingalt Flips through their notes...
Hum and yeah, I should check that detention facility too, have a taxi put there, just in case I have to have the /\/The PINBALL\/\ scratches some random T9's paint and crash in the process.

Ok. All set! I only have to drop at the detention facility and have my dear Doppinder bring in good old Chippy for the return trip. It's weird how it always feels like I am forgetting something... (and leaves his favorite beer coaster at the Station's Bar, comes back running to the outfitting shop a minute later...)

Alright, finally found the ship's name here is what I am gonna call that one. Hands a piece of paper to the mechanic. On it, one could read: "BRING YOUR COASTER".

Note that McCulley Gateway in Meticuli appears to have sold out of 3A life support units (almost as if they've experienced a sudden and unexpected high demand for them!).

Probably best when building your regulation Cobra if you just follow the regulation build Coriolis link ..

.. click the '$' icon top-right to get the current EDDB list of stations selling those modules and then enter a reference system (e.g. Pareco) to find somewhere nearby.

P.S. I'm also suggesting we tweak the regulation build ever so slightly by moving the 1E frag cannons from the bottom mounted size 1 slots to the top mounted size 2 slots. It doesn't really matter and you won't need them for this race anyway (n.b. feel free to power off any unused modules) but I know some folks are more comfortable having their guns mounted where they can see them.
