Introduction
[Rules subject to change until Race 1 begins]
Building on our second season of swiftness, the Buckyball Racing Club is doing it again, this time with more risk and luck (hopefully)!
This will be another racing season consisting of 8 races run at monthly intervals throughout 3310. And as the third series of eight occurs, you better be feelin' lucky punk. Because we're off to the Lucky Bucky Landing Slots!
With this edition we will running some of the community's favorite races from the past 8 years of Buckyball Racing Club history, as well as introducing new races to the mix! With almost 100 to choose from there's sure to be loads of variety in the types of crashes we can manage!
In addition to the souped-up over-engineered Unlimited class where anything goes, check out the Classic Cobra in Regulation!
Fly Fast, Fly Dangerous.
(note: this collage only shows a partial selection of our racing history)
Each race is a time trial that runs for a set duration (typically 8 days, Saturday through Sunday to cover two weekends and a work week). Because of our time trial setup, you can enter whenever you want, as often as you want, and as many categories and ships and routes as you want. We’re all about your choice here, as long as you choose SPEED! And MAYHEM! And maybe with a little bit of LUCK, you'll even survive to the finish line! These will function as standalone events, you do not have to be a member or have attended any previous events to join in the fun and mayhem.
In addition to the scoreboard and podium for each race, you will be awarded points according to your final placement that will count towards your overall championship standing. The 3310 champions will be announced after the last race of the season. To allow for scheduling conflicts and variable performance, only the points from your best 6 results will be counted. So you can miss 2 races without feeling left out!
Please share the banner and link with your own communities and friends to promote the race season and participation! An updated Triple Eight Banner will be coming soon once the organizer gets his g job done!
We recommend all racers use Odyssey, although some races may also be completed in Horizons. For SRV sections we need consistent terrain, so some organizers may mandate a specific client. See individual race rules for details.
Unlimited
Inspired by CMDR Sgurr's use of the Imperial Courier, Asp Scout, Cobra Mk. III, Eagle Mk II, Sidewinder, and Dolphin in last year's Unlimited class, the Race Marshals have decided they are bored of seeing so many Vipers and Couriers on the podium and have implemented a new anti-boredom rule. Any racer who places in the top 5 in unlimited will have that ship "locked" and will no longer receive more than 15 points (6th place) in any following race that season during which they enter the same ship type. This should encourage the top racers (last season this would only affect 10 racers) to spread their wings more and explore a variety of vehicles for mayhem. If you do not place in the top 5 this does not affect you. If you do, don't use that ship type again in unlimited for the season.
Regulation
We usually have two different ship classes that people can enter in our races. An unlimited class where you can race pretty much any ship you fancy and a regulation class where everyone is racing with the same ship and outfitting. For the Triple Eight Championship we'll be using the classic Cobra Mk III for our regulation class ship. CMDRs can use the same regulation class ship throughout the entire championship. (of course you're still allowed to use different ships to compete in the unlimited class as well). For certain races we may have to specify minor changes be made to the outfitting of the Cobra but the basic build that will be required is as follows:
Regulation Cobra
The '$' sign at the top-right of that page will take you to an EDDB search for stations where you can buy everything you need to build the regulation class Cobra. For last year's racers you can dust off the same trusty ol' Cobra from Magic 8-Ball and Swift Sixteen, if we raced it there, you're already to go!
Scoring
This year we have changed the scoring metrics to accommodate greater competition at all levels. Instead of point differentials for places 1-10, there are now point differentials for places 1-20. This will enable fewer ties and greater reward for all our regularly participating racers. This does cause a slight bias from previous seasons, entrants who now show up for only one or a few races and score very well will suffer a moderate penalty compared to the previous scoring system. So show up and RACE!
Participants in each race will be awarded points as follows according to their final position in that race's leaderboard:
1st - 20 points
2nd - 19 points
3rd - 18 points
4th - 17 points
5th - 16 points
6th - 15 points
7th - 14 points
8th - 13 points
9th - 12 points
10th - 11 points
11th - 10 points
12th - 9 points
13th - 8 points
14th - 7 points
15th - 6 points
16th - 5 points
17th - 4 points
18th - 3 points
19th - 2 points
All other completed runs - 1 point
The final championship score will be the combined number of points from each racer's best 6 scores. That means racers can miss 2 of the season's races without incurring a significant penalty.
Each event will include two race classes, an Unlimited class where they can fly any ship they want (within the rules of the individual race), and a Regulation class which will require use of a specific ship and loadout as specified by the Regulation build.
There will be two championship leaderboards, one showing points earned from competing in each race's Unlimited class and one showing the points from the Regulation ship class. Racers are allowed to submit runs in both classes for each race and thereby have qualifying scores for both championship leaderboards.
