The Cassiopeia Project

MISSION UPDATE: 15 NOV 3302

Strange things are afoot. I started recording a tutorial video this morning to help explain how the process of surveying the class G2 stars along what I'm calling the "Tycho Corridor" should proceed. For some reason though it completely ignored my microphone for the voice over. Back to the drawing board. :(

Then Drew Wagar, author of Elite: Reclamation and the upcoming sequel Elite: Premonition, popped into a thread that I monitor and offered this cryptic statement:

You might want to ensure your copies of ED are up to date prior to Thursday.

Cheers,

Drew.

Then our friend CMDR Erimus popped into another thread that is dedicated to the Formidine Rift expedition and offered the following:

There will be a major announcement regarding this mission made on Thursday.

Stay tuned ;)

I think we need to keep a close eye on these developments. We are very, very close to the Formidine Rift and, if things heat up over there, we might want to consider placing this project on hold and provide a hand with that one.

Thoughts on this?

Now you're just teasing me. Those kind of filters would be awesome.

Yeah, SN 1181 is another one. I've been thinking about what to do after the Cassiopeia Project. One idea is to launch an on-going project: SNRS - Supernova Remnant Survey to visit and catalog as many galactic SNRs as we can. That will be for a later date though.

My first exploration trip I went "sightseeing" I was originally planning a tour of all the Milky Way Meiser Objects, but then realised how much time that was and just did all the cool stuff between sol and the Crab, would be a cool group project I think!

For reference for those not reading discord decision was to stay where we are till Thursday.

I think we're entering a tin foil hat area.

I also think it would be a bad idea to change the itinerary in any way just because of forum rumours. If we find out that FD really do have something planned imminently for the Rift which our Expedition stands to walk right into, we mustn't in any way behave in-game as if we know about it beforehand or we might spoil FD's plans. We should just carry on as the unsuspecting band of researchers on a mission to search for supernova remnants we're supposed to be, right up until we get hit with something unusual.

That is the other thing. As RatPhink mentioned on Discord, what if whatever is happening on Thursday is the *result* of our initiating this expedition? As unlikely as that may be it can't be totally dismissed.

I got a rat currently on longrange patrol out in the rift ill call him up let him know stuff is happening.

Would be kind of cool. Would also be kind of sad, come to think of it, as that would imply that the only way to trigger such things is to make a big fuss about it on the forums. Who knows how many lone-wolf non-forumers might have had the same idea in the past and set out on a fruitless expedition [sad]

Good point. However, the rate at which we've totally failed to solve this one kind of indicates that it is a little too obscure. The Canonn guys can find an archaeological site with nothing more then a screen grab and the Rift, after all this time and all the fuss, remains a mystery. We've known for a while that Drew has planned to release fresh hints via Galnet. If our little expedition ends up as part of that narrative, I wouldn't mind. That is very, very unlikely however. Chances are that anything coming down on Thursday has nothing to do with us at all :(

Am now at Kappa Cas 3302-11-15-2350UTC. Unless there's a specific waypoint or assignment I will head straight out for first set of co-ordinates on the spreadsheet with no G2-Type entries yet; I expect it will be filled before I get there in which case I'll just head on for the next empty set of co-ordinates, etc. Good hunting o7

There will still be plenty of stars out here when you get here. Keep flying!

MISSION UPDATE 16 NOV 3302

Although the official waypoint for today is Kappa Cassiopeia many of you have made the effort to head toward the search corridor for Tycho G. I've made my way there myself so I could record a video explaining the search methodology. Recording this video became very frustrating. Windows refused to record audio from my microphone so I rebooted. Windows update took over from there and turned my PC into an unbootable pile of mush. I don't know why this PC hates windows update so much. After repairing the installation (again, I do this almost every time windows updates) I was back online and, after much frustration, got my microphone working.

Here's the tutorial:

Captains log 11/16/3302 these are the voyages of the Fuel Rat ship Nightcall and her crew. We are continuing to boldly go into the Hegoi sector. The last few days have been busy. Today I have managed to get a rock called bob to sign a refueling contract between the Federation of Rocks and the fuel rats. On Tuesday I landed on a planet inhabited by an insectoid like race called the Thargoids. They refused to sign any agreements but I told them where to find civilized space they seemed very curious about us and assured me they come in peace. I gave them the coordinates that they wanted. We are continuing to map the Hegoi sector just a few days ago I discovered an asteroid.

not sure if this is your problem or not, but I have found that every time I try to start windows 10 if I have any usb devises plugged in at all then Win won't start. if I unplug the usbs it works

what are the criteria for red vs yellow systems? also I think we need a better system for taking screen shots. orientation is going to make it had to compare the photos. its too bad the game doesn't tell you what your galactic X,Y,Z orientation is in system. I'm trying to use the strip of the milky way to keep mine consistant, but that only works for the shots pointing back at Sol. without the compass it's also hard to tell when you've hit 180 degrees from Sol.

Hello

Sorry I am a bit behind at the moment (I exploded on my first run out) and I am busy over the next few days so I won't be able to start going through coordinates until the weekend at earliest. Try not to get eaten by The Thargoids. Well done on progress by the way.

Well, the thing is, as far as I can tell, FD just forgot all of them except the Crab.

And there are not that many historical SNR's anyway, so the number of targets would be limited.

I fully plan to return to the rift area in the coming months*, and then I will do a long return trough the outer vacuus region.
With the new engineered ranges of ~50 lyr for an ASP this will be quite fun. I could see organizing a group exploration
of that area (not done yet) as a rather fun / challenging endavor (much navigation challenges there).

*i.e. as soon as I have reason to believe that there is something to be found in rather well narrowed down area using new clues

Hi Cmdrs o7

Moving to coordinates right now and looking for G2 class star. Just a question, but did you guy's looking for over class star like F,A,B,O in order to see if there is a G2 hiding in a binary system ? I do that and found 2 G2 in a system with A class star.
Let me know if it's useful.

In principle, the tycho nova conpanion star is a lone G2 star with high proper motion. "wandering star".

So it should not be in association.

Some discussion on Discord as to identifying Tycho G by his age, comparing it with the age information on scanned G2 stars given in System Map.

However the only direct evidence for the age of Tycho G is in this ancient article posted by Cmdr Raymondo the Great:

http://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-news/tychos-supernova-companion-discovered/?c=y

This gives the age of Tycho G as: 'several billion years older' than Sol, which would make him at least 7,000 million years old (or 7 milliards where I come from). But this appears entirely to have been a wild guess.

Even so, Tycho G could be of similar age to the SN1572 progenitor white dwarf. If he was as old as 12,000 million years, he would be a Population II star interloping from the Thick Disc into the Thin Disc, and therefore by association so would SN1572 have been. Tycho would have observed the late explosion of one of the first stars to form in the Galaxy.
