The Cat Catch-all and Categorizing Thread (the Feline Fixation)

This is definitely inspired by similar threads. Highlighting analyzing the need for particular cats, beyond just a "true" Leopard.

It goes without saying that most people want, and we will more than likely get, a true leopard in the games run. There's a variety to choose from, and those are already discussed. Taking that off the table, what other kinds of felines might be of interest?

For me, while I do want a second species of Lion, honestly, the only other feline in my want list at all is the Ocelot, and that's quite far down the list. I wouldn't be unhappy with a Serval or Caracal, but I don't feel they're really needed either. But if we didn't get any of these four in, I wouldn't be unhappy either.

What are everyone else's top feline priorities after a true leopard? And how much of a priority are they, comparatively?

I would like to get the sand cat, because they are very small and would fit well in a desert house next to the fennec foxes and meerkats. They would be very different to other cats in game.
Beat me to it, wanted to post basically the same thing. Sand cat would be a truly small cat, a different niche to what we already have. I would also accept an Ocelot, but other than that I am fine with the felines (yes, I am one of the few people that does not want a leopard 🙈).

That's a good suggestion and that's two for two right there. A Sand Cat would be a great desert addition, which the game really does need.

I've gotta give my vote to the Caracal. We need more smaller cats, so I think it would be a great pick for such a slot. Not to mention, the kittens sound like lasers, which is always a plus.

I was about to say the Asiatic golden cat myself - I remember seeing one at Edinburgh Zoo years ago and being amazed at just how beautiful they are. They are by no means tiny cats but would still be the smallest one in the game so far. The sheer range of colour patterns they come in certainly helps with their appeal, as far as I am concerned.

It also helps that their kittens are, in my mind, one of the cutest of all living things:

There's honestly a lot of greats. Purely based on ones I've seen, Caracal represents deserts and a new region (Middle East), sand cat is another adorable small mammal, and ocelot is another good Americas (incl. Central America and the Sonoran Desert) rep. I'd love bobcat but given the dwindling number of slots there's no way I'd pick another lynx species over something more unique. Black-footed cat is so, so cute and I love small mammals, but is less visually iconic than the sand cat. Serval is great, pallas' cat is great, fishing cat is an oddball pick but I really want it since it's one of two species from Smithsonian's Asia Trail that we're still missing.

Caracal probably tops my list but for purely personal reasons as I've briefly worked with a young Caracal before and they are so full of personality. Plus I want a cat that pounces properly as an animation in long grass. Fishing Cat would be another good one cos of their slightly squished looking faces. But basically I'd want a small cat species above anything larger (including the leopard to be honest). Or if we wanted a European pick then the European Wild Cat might not be a bad move either.

Or something really out of the box like the flat-headed cat? I know some people don't like it when it's not a common zoo species but personally I like some of them to be really rare and interesting for that reason

I love cats and would like the ocelot, serval and caracal. The last two would fit perfectly in my South-African zoo, while the ocelot is just an incredibly beautiful cat and we need more South-American animals!

I really would like to have 4 further cats and these are also the most popular remaining ones. The Leopard is for me still the most important. But after this I would have nothing against the three small cats Caracal, Ocelot and Serval in this order. All three of them are looking very unique in my opinion. If we are getting more cats like the Pallas cat or the Jaguarundi I personally would not say no but this seems unlikely.

Edit: In case of the lion I personally do not want to have another subspecies. The classical asiatic lion already belongs to the subspecies we have in the game. If we should ever get a clone pack this could be a pick in my opinion.

Extremely difficult question for me considering how much I love cats. I don't think I'd be able to settle for just one species, and I would certainly like to see as many species as possible, with representation from all the extant feline lineages as well as all big cat species present in the game. If I had my way, I'd honestly go with the ocelot, fishing cat, leopard cat, Pallas' cat, sand cat, black-footed cat, European wildcat, serval, caracal, leopard, Geoffroy's cat, jaguarundi, bobcat, jungle cat, Asian golden cat, rusty-spotted cat, and margay.

If I had only the option for one more small cat, along with a leopard (general or any subspecies), I'd go with the Amur leopard and caracal.

In an ideal world where support for PZ went on forever, I’d gladly welcome many more felid species. Unfortunately though, this isn’t the case so I’d personally rather see some other taxonomic families get better representation. Going by the numbers, cats are currently the most well-represented out of all PZ’s animal groups.

This said, if I had to pick an additional feline species it’d have to be one of the true small cats. PZ currently has plenty of large cats to pick from but nothing to show for more petite species. A Pallas Cat or Sand Cat would be most ideal, as both are pretty small in size, iconic options, fill niches vacant in the current cat roster, and either would likely offer new animations and a more specialized rig (which is the main draw for me).

Besides the African Leopard of course, the cats I'd like to see in the game would be the Caracal, Serval, Ocelot, and Bobcat. The East African Lion would be a great one too, since the lions we currently have in the game have slightly weird manes.

Tough call; cats are definitely one of those groups I can't get enough of...

For me though, the Caracal is absolutely essential.

After that though, there are lots of great options... Serval, Pallas Cat, Bobcat, Sumatran Tiger... lots of options...
