The Cat Catch-all and Categorizing Thread (the Feline Fixation)

We're talking cats? In order of what I want the most and that I have seen in captivity:
  1. Amur leopard.
  2. Sumatran tiger.
  3. Serval.
  4. Caracal.
  5. Scottish wildcat.
  6. Ocelot.
  7. Fishing cat.
  8. Pallas cat.
  9. Asian golden cat.
Great list, although personally I'm less interested in another tiger.

The Scottish Wildcat would be great pick as it adds a lot of diversity both by adding in a small cat and to increase the representation of European animals. It is also critically endangered so great to raise awareness.

I'd also add sand cats as mentioned by others. When I see the fennec fox I just wish I could have sand cats next door.

I personally dont understand the wish for the scottish wild cat in particular.
Like why whould you pick this very niche sub population, not even species over the general european wild cat?

For me:
1. UK isn't exactly known for exciting animals (kind of our own fault for killing them off), so this would be a chance to showcase one of our only remaining charismatic animals.
2. To raise awareness of its dire conservation status
3. It's a kitty, what's not to want

I do understand your point of view though. I defintely think part of it is because I'm British myself. I'm very passionate about British conservation and rewilding.

But why not pick the general one then with nods in the funfact to that sub population.
Thats like picking the florida panther over the general cougar, a very endangerd sub population that just changes their name to be less flexible, while not changing anything about the animals itself
I mean you could do that and I wouldn't be upset or anything. I just personally would rather have the Scottish Wildcat.

The Sumatran tiger is far more significant in terms of conservation than either of the tigers we already have, and in fact it's unlikely that there are actually any pure Bengal tigers in captivity at all outside of India and its surrounding neighbours. Historically zoos didn't differentiate between mainland tiger subpopulations so most "Bengal tigers" in zoos are actually hybridised with Siberian tigers.

Additionally the Sumatran tiger is the most common tiger in AZA and EAZA accredited zoos. On a personal level it's also a must-have for Australasian zoos.
European wild cat im all for it, but isnt this just another formosan black bear Situation?
Not really - the Scottish wild cat is a genetically significant subpopulation whereas the Formosan bear isn't. Plus there is a ton of variation in wildcats so it would be more like a timber wolf situation to get a general one. Besides, they gave us two subpopulations of the mainland tiger in the base game and a completely random lion subpopulation as well.

I love cats! I would buy a pack that focused on cats for sure.

The Leopard is a given. With the Leopard we've got all the big cats. But what the game is lacking are small cats. We've only got the Eurasian lynx, and that's a medium sized species really.

So!

A desert cat that represents the Middle East: Caracal, or Sand cat.

A tropical South American forest cat: Ocelot, Margay, or Jaguarundi.

A small mountain cat: Pallas cat, or Andean mountain cat.

Then there are popular other picks like the Serval, and Bobcat.

And then there are a plethora of other small cats like the fishing cat, golden cat, black footed cat, flatheaded cat, different wildcats...

honestly, I think PZ team should consider the Species specific theme DLC after the current biome formula and country formula. Just to wrap things up but of cux this should like in 2027 at least. I want this game to keep adding content. Anyways here is my take on the cat pack.

1) Amur Leopard
2) Asian Golden Cat
3) Fishing cat
4) Sumatran Tiger
5) Caracal
6) Sand Cat
7) Pallas’s cat
8) ocelot

That's a big no for me... it's way too specific, many animals lack enough good options to fill a pack, and there likely isn't enough DLC left to do a whole lot them... also, plenty of viable themes they could go with beyond biomes and continents, like hemispheres or conservation status.

I'll second a lot of the thoughts that were already brought up in this thread: it really depends on how much longer support will continue for the game.

If we get DLC packs until 2026 or so, I would gladly welcome at least five more cats to the game, and possibly even more. But since that most likely won't be the case, the amount of cats I would appreciate over other, more unique species is relatively low.

Obviously, any leopard is the most requested species at this point, and I would personally be very happy to receive the Persian Leopard because they would help fill a geographical region that has not been explored sufficiently by the game yet, as opposed to an Indian, African or Amur Leopard. (The Amur Leopard would be great for conservation and realism purposes, but two leopards are rather unlikely given how many different cats we could still receive.)

Then, when it comes to smaller cats, there are a couple of species that are still very highly requested, those being the Caracal, the Serval and the Ocelot. I would be happy with all three of them: the Caracal because, again, it would add to the Middle East roster and would provide a suitable alternative to the Eurasian Lynx; the Serval because it's absolutely beautiful and would be such a striking and wonderful addition to any African-themed area, and the Ocelot because it would be such a welcome alternative to the Jaguar in South American sections.

But, as for less popular species, I would also love to see a Jaguarundi (they're so beautiful, and look almost mustelid-like), a Sand Cat (they would fit perfectly next to Fennec Foxes) and, of course, the Pallas's Cat simply because they are so interesting and would fit perfectly into any Himalaya-themed section. I would even be happy with the Geoffroy's Cat, but understand that they are less highly requested. I have also seen mentions of the Fishing Cat, which I think would have made a perfect fit for the recent Wetlands Pack.

More lions or tigers are definitely lower on my wishlist, and if anything, the Asiatic Lion and Sumatran Tiger are only so requested because the subspecies choices in the base game were so off. In summary: the one cat that I truly desperately still want to see in the game is the serval, and if I could choose a second one (depending on how many more DLCs we get), it would probably be a caracal before any of the true leopards.

What I would like to see is smaller packs between the main DLC's with like 3 animals in them for a slightly lower price that cover "animal families" or other vague groupings. Like a "dog pack" or "small cat pack", "small monkey pack", "wader pack" (for wading birds), etc.

Also I think it's a reach calling a single sort-of biome pack part of a formula. 😅

Love that suggestion!
(Just imagine if they had done a small canine pack with the Arctic Wolf, the Dingo and the Dhole at some point in between, which would have freed up three spots in the DLCs that were all occupied with... let's say controversial inclusions that not everyone loved across the board.)

Personally I would have scrapped the Thomson's gazelle and included the Arctic wolf in the deluxe edition, leaving the fox for the Arctic Pack, but hindsight is 20/20.

I hope Frontier sees this.

I'm sure if they could do these packs they would; if the PZ community has proven anything it's that we'll throw money at them almost no matter what they produce.
I guess, as long as they see the profits. Honestly charges like $5, then everyone would get it rather they use it or not. LOL
