Ships The Chieftain - FAS thing

On every thread about the alliance Chueftain, someone always chimes in with "hey everyone, the FAS is lovely."

I love the chieftain; but, quite some time ago, I saw one of these threads and I gave the FAS a go. To me, it wasn't even a quarter of the ship that the chieftain could be; I still have the FAS, Gathering dust and storing modules. I've got 2 questions for anyone who loved the chieftain and the challenger (I gave both and they are both great for two very different load outs and purposes), who then tried the FAS: 1. Did you like it as much as, or prefer it to the chieftain? 2. Are you building it entirely differently and using it for a different purpose?

The FAS is the prototype Chieftain. It existed long before the Alliance trio was a twinkle in someone’s eye. I wouldn’t expect a car from the 70s to drive like a modern car fresh off the lot. That’s the best way to think about it.

You’re not going to get as evolved a performance out of the Assault Ship. It’ll boost faster but be slower at baseline. It has fewer hardpoints in worse locations and less powerful shields. You still can outturn and orbit the heck out of most opponents.

My favorite FAS build is https://s.orbis.zone/i9zg . One trigger.

I briefly abandoned all sense of dignity and debased my fleet by trying out the FAS & FGS after obtaining them without any Fed ranks via a CG.

I fully engineered them, but they didn't last long. All the engineered modules are now being used in worthy ships...

Interesting. I'm xbox; so, I'd have to have drag on the frag in order to be able too land more shots with the PA. I might try something like that, though

Yeah, my fun-time shield tank PvE FAS is pretty similar in weapon loadout to yours. I have one change though as I use 1 laser on top to keep constant pressure and to prevent that start of shield charging. I also use it to save ammo on any boring eagles etc.
I made it ages ago to have 1 button ship that I could use to learn better on how to use fixed weapons. Eventually I just figured out that it is my most fun ship to fly.

i use a similar build on mine.

except it is two triggers. all the PA's on one to drop the Shields and then get in really, really close and unload with the Doubleshot Pacifier.

and then some more PA's.

The purpose of the corrosive Pacifier is to hit before the PAs and give them a 25% damage boost against hulls and modules. I call it a “tenderizer”.

Looks like both have to get in close and stay I'm close; but, the chief floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee; whereas, the FAS is a clinching fighter, and has to wear its opponent down with body blows. Would that be an accurate summary of how to use them differently?

The best Chieftain build I had was selling it and getting my Anaconda.

Seriously though I did have a Chieftain, it's a fun ship and I even traded it in for the fighter bay variant, but ended up going with a Conda, and not ever looking back.

(Disclaimer: I play 99.9% exclusively in Solo Mode, so opinions will most certainly vary.)
I only use my Conda for taking modules from low jum0 range ships to the engineers

Hi Innocentius

I like where you are going with that build, however I would build it like this.
Changes I made it as follows: better hull, fuel scoop instead of fuel tank and interdictor, different power priorities, I think this will make a great assassinator or bounty hunting ship. It should be able to operate in a small system where there is no place to buy ammo.

I personally don’t like weak hulls and prefer to have fuel scoops on my ships, even if it is a small one. I understand that you are using the extra fuel tank as extra ammo, but for assassination missions the 18t could be enough. Would like to know how many shots would you get from that and how many extra the additonal tank provides?

I have no experience with the FAS or plasma slug ammo, so take my comments with my ignorance in mind. I have only tried the Gunship and I use it as a liberator/pirate ship.

Not bad mouthing the FGS, but I did find it a bit sluggish compared to the Chief, (love my Chief), but it hits hard and is pretty fast in a strait line. Also it has many hard points. Mine is fitted with seeker missiles on 4 of the hard points. Takes out the drives on any ship PDQ as soon as the shields go down. Also though enough to head-but most ships without flinching. Poor man‘s Packhounds, but I suspect a salvo of 4 seekers hit harder than Packhounds.

Ok, so i'm going to table a motion that anyone who bad mouths the FGS has to spend an hour in a locked room with @Bottom Hat as punishment.

Right, the clock starts when the door closes.

The Chieftain is a V.1.2 FAS really, it has better arranged weapons that make it much more flexible. For example the smalls are ideal for cytos for up close spanking.

The real gut punch is that now the Orca is better than the FAS too.

I briefly had an orca, and a beluga. I sold them, just to make my credits stack look like enough for a fleet carrier (even though I don't intend to buy one - I just like to be able to look at the credits total and say to myself: well, there's a fleet carrier right there). I probably should have kept those two, as I would probably find a use for them at a later date).
