The Chieftain

I also thought about buying and outfitting it for exploration except it doesn't have another spare slot for Detailed Surface Scanner

a, it wouldn't take more than one more slot! I'd happily sacrifice one of the military slots for another general use slot of the same or slightly smaller size.

Don't you dare mess with my hull reinforcements. Those military slots are there for a reason - this is not an exploration nor a multi roll ship. It is built for two things - shooting stuff, and not dying.

Yea yea, the Chieftain is pretty much for Thargoid combat b/c shields are useless against them, and that's why I'm not buying it :p

Don't let that stop you. The c6 optional slot is great for either shields or SCB's. I have a c6 Bi-Weave and a couple of SB's, and I have been having great success. Just tonight I fought it out with a Dangerous 'Conda, and left with the bounty, and 96% hull. The aChief is a great conventional fighter. I don't even have top grade Engineering. G2/g3 through out. It's really fun to fly.

And now NPC Clippers don't just role on their backs to die, you're much more likely to have an interesting dogfight.

Even with shields up most of the time, I've already lost my canopy twice to NPCs with eclectic load outs. Who carries a single turreted cannon with high yield shells? Seriously?

You definitely want a shield on your Chieftain, it's nimble, but not nimble enough to avoid getting smashed in the face.

With a face that big, its prone to get smashed in it. Seriously, the canopy is one huge bullseye on the front just asking to get shot.

I mean it is a combat ship so versatility isn't a thing they had in mad when designing it, how well it does in its intended role it's a whole different discussion.

Also why a cargo rack? Take that one out plus the fuel tank. do it raw

Yep it's a right chunky monkey with its chin out begging for a smack. Got some guns, though.

It's compareable to the FAS I reckon, it trades a medium slot for three smalls which gives it a bit more weapon loadout diversity. Dunno about the hull stats and agility, but they are probably close.

It is certainly more comparable to the FAS than the FdL, but it flies very differently to the FAS. The best I can do to describe the difference is: the aChief spins on it's center of gravity faster. Not just pitch rate, but roll as well.

I had been a devoted FAS pilot until I got into the aChief. I've always hated the FdL, so if that helps you get a picture, make what you can of it. If you have the credits, put one together and blow some stuffs up. It's worth the effort.

I enjoy flying my Clipper and the only things it loses out to Chieftain are:

1. longer jump range;
2. able to land in outpost; and maybe
3. more focal hard point placements except those small points are useless I find

(just my 2 cents).

I'm not fond, at all, of small hard points. But, I think the intention here is to offer a variety of options. Especially when you consider Engineer's Experimental Effects. The iClipper has, if memory serves, a few more internal slots, including a c7 slot. So, the comparison between the FAS, and aChief is much closer to one-on-one.

On the contrary, iClipper has more optional internal slots than the Chieftain with 3 military slots locked for 3 modules only.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to convey. Implying that the iClipper is more layed out like a Multi-role, rather than a pure combat ship. I do start to wonder how well the iClipper does as an explorer. There is always a nagging feeling that I should find a use for one.

Managed to get one of mine to 41ly range with some tinkering - decent shield (toss up with AFMU but I like landing on planets, so...), SRV, scanners, couple of heatsinks & I'm taking it to Beagle Point. It may not be as luxurious as the Exploronda with day spa, hunting reserve, wave pool & gourmet food court on board, but who says you can't go exploring in one of these things ? ;)
