The Clipper's FSD - Why, FDEV? ...... щ(゚Д゚щ)WHY!?

Dear FDEV.

Why does the Clipper - a ship just about as huge as an Anaconda - only have a Class 5 FSD bay, whereas the similarly sized Anaconda has a Class 6?

Enquiring minds would like to know. Is this just another design decision, er, eccentricity?

Actually the Clipper isn't much bigger than the Python. The only thing that makes it a large ship is the width of the wing pods.

Anaconda is bigger. The Clipper already has a pretty good jump range as it is. If a ship needs a bigger FSD, it's the FdL.

15-20Ly jump range is perfectly fine on the Clipper.

No it's not as good as the Anaconda, but that is also perfectly fine.

It's not just the Clipper... most ships in the game have a cripplingly low jumprange, especially combat ships but also many combat-fitted multi-purpose ships. My Python i.e. jumps only a measly 13 LY.

Tbh I have no idea why FD is punishing us by making travel to the next community goal or whatever so tedious. When I have an hour of play time, plot a route to a CG and it says "+20 jumps", I'm done with that.

Personally I would increase the maximum FSD class by one for _all_ ships to reduce these tedious and senseless jump orgies.

I know I probably have defended the absymal FDL jump range in the past, but I have changed my mind in the meantime. I definitely would like to see a better jump range on the FDL, just a few more Ly would already help immensely.

It is also longer than the Python.

Anyway, the Clipper is a 22 million credits ship, with some awesome features like big cargo space, amazing flying agility, extreme speed, good weapons, strong hull, lots of module slots, lots of power when upgraded... So it had to have some drawbacks... And it has, low fuel, less than stellar jump range, not exactly great shields.

Let's say it's the ships "personality" :)

Horrible shields, actually. The tiny little Courier has better shields without even trying very hard.

OP: The Clipper has the same hull mass as the Anaconda, but less internal volume; it uses smaller and lighter modules and has fewer free compartments and less maximum cargo space. As such, while its starting weight is higher, its ending weight after you add in gear and cargo is dramatically lower, making a larger FSD unnecessary.

Plus with a bigger FSD that fuel tank would become awfully small.
Bigger tank and bigger FSD and she isn't going to be as fast.

Excellent points all round.

It's just it's Monday morning and I felt like a gripe - because I really fracking love the Clipper and as an explorer I'd love it to be able to get something like 30-35LY jump range :)

I'm just about to self-destruct the DBE I'm in (after only jumping about 800LY from inhabited space last night) because I'm finding it a depressing ship to be in compared to a Clipper. That's twice I've tried out the DBE and twice I've regretted it ;)

"Why not the Asp?" you ask; because its engine noise is redonculous and when I'm many LY from inhabited space, it's the Clipper's luxurious bridge which saves me from insanity ;)

"Why not the Anaconda?" you ask; Because it doesn't have that sleek Gutamaya design, inside and out ;)

Plus even if I did want an Anaconda, I couldn't afford one, and since I don't grind, plus I can only play ED in short bursts at a time, the Clipper is the ideal ship for me and my poor psychology - except its bloomin' jump range :)

Ah but for me a bigger FSD and additional fuel tank would be ideal as an explorer :)

A bit better FSD and a bit more fuel would be nice, for such a large (for a fighter) and expensive ship.

Space is big. The only thing that you can use to convey that distances are vast is that it takes time to get from A to B. If you dont have the time, you dont travel those distances. There is only so much you can circumvent this before it starts really harming the game.

Instead of reducing the time it takes to go vast distances, it would be better to change the game so that traveling is not simply a means to an end but part of the game. Things need to happen along the way that makes every jump meaningful exciting (not always in a negative way) and not something you're doing just to get to where you're going. Just like Supercruise, where currently the only mechanic in the game to spice that borefest up is interdictions. More events need to be added to both. That would be a proper fix, not buff ships over and over to compensate for boredom.

Agreed on all points.

I gave my Clipper a re-fit (after self-destructing that DBE), and I have gotten its jump range up to just under 25LY - but that's with no weapons or defences other than a pretty weaksauce shield (which should be enough to cope with an NPC whilst I boost away from it) - respectable enough for now I suppose.

But yeah - there needs to be more interesting stuff for exploration as the intrepid explorer goes along. Perhaps come the 5th August we'll know if this upcoming announcement will throw a bone to explorers in this manner - or not.
