The Clipper's FSD - Why, FDEV? ...... щ(゚Д゚щ)WHY!?

I like the idea that there is some drawback to these ships instead of them just completely replacing less expensive ships in every respect.

The anaconda of course breaks this trend, which is precisely why I'll never get one - the big cheese combat ship should not also be the best exploration ship and the best trade ship.

I will agree, however, that sub 15ly is criminally low, and could use attention.

In other science fiction universes, it is common for smaller ships to rely on larger ships for LY transport. For example, in Star Wars, the Tie Fighter had no hyperspace engine. Some X-wing designs were upgraded to support a hyperspace engine but with limited range. In Babylon 5, the fighters had to rely on a transport or a gate as they had no hyperspace engine. Star Trek was an oddity in that I never saw fighters. Fighters in Star Gate had no hyperspace engine and relied on motherships or a gate. So, it seems fortuitous that ED fighters are able to jump at all but given the fighter size, I'm not surprised that they have limited jump distance with the Asp being an oddity, not because of it's FSD (only size 5) but because the ship is so lightweight. It makes sense to me that the Anaconda has a large jump range because it can house a large FSD. I can envision an ED upgrade to support capital ships that can be owned or be hired transport your fighter. So, leaving the existing fighters and small freighters with size 5 FSD seems to fit in with possible game expansions.

To be honest, I don't care for realism in a computer game. If I did, I would hate ED for its ridiculously unrealistic WW2-style dogfigthing. I love it for its lacking realism ;)

Travelling from one location to another, though, is exceptionally tedious and mind-numbing in ED. As I said, if I want to go to a trading-CG, I can take my Conda, which has 34LY jump range empty to go there and participate... no problem. If it's a combat CG, though... I jump into my combat ship, plot a route... 25 jumps. No thanks, let's do something else. Spending half an hour just to travel somewhere is too much, especially when I start thinking about another half an hour for the way back to my other ships.

I also don't really care about HOW I can get there faster. Jump Gate, Capital Ship, Ship Transportation Service... I'll take anything. But there's nothing. Players are actually prevented from participating in CGs or other events by travel being too time-consuming. I can accept the fact, that exploration is a slow and difficult task, but travelling inside the inhabited bubble should be easier.

I really hope the "colossal announcement" is the implementation of some sort of fast-travel. Because that's something that would really be a fundamental improvement to gameplay ;)

What would you be willing to lose in return for the bigger FSD? Less manouverability? Change those large hardpoints into medium? Less module slots?

The necessary mechanics are already in place. The only thing that needs to be done is increase the FSD housing by one class. If you equip the same FSD as now, nothing changes. If you equipped one class higher, the usual side effects would occur: higher mass -> lower speed and manouverability, higher fuel consumption, higher energy requirement. No additianol changes are needed.

It's unlikely to happen, though. Presently I would be happy, if they implemented the ship transportation service that was promised in beta.

Exceptionally tedious and mind numbing, I LoLed. Apparently you have never done anything seriously mind numbing or tedious.

25 jumps too far and justification of fast travel?

They may as well never have expanded the bubble around Eranin, back when there were no Jump ranges and fuel

Of course the individual pain-threshold varies from player to player, I'm aware of that. Nothing is annoying enough that you won't find someone who likes it. But I bet 100 tons of palladium that if a method of fast-travel was implemented, >90% of the players would happily use it. If you like doing 50 jumps to get somewhere and back, feel free to do so. Personally I'd like to do something more entertaining than that in my limited play-time.

If fast travel (as opposed to ship relation) becomes a thing I imagine everyone will be using it to trade rare goods lol

Exploits like that can probably be avoided by allowing fast travel only for unladen ships. Interestingly enough, though, rare trading is usually done in ships with relatively high jump ranges, like Asp, DBE or T6. Combat ships on the other hand, which can't profit from a high jump range, are crippled to 10+something LY.

I've got no idea what you're all complaining about.

I'm 3000ly from Sag A* in my ORCA.

No, it isn't fast.

Yes, I have a spa bath on the bridge.

If you're going slow, go slow in STYLE.

Good man! I went in a 20k LY circle in my Orca. Travel in style is what i say.

I think you missed the point of my post. Some people want bigger jump, fine, but what would you give up for that? Basically people ask for more on their favourite ships, and not consider that then it makes the ship better. They say just improve this, or that, and make it more expensive. So let's say make it more expensive... and then there is one less mid class ship, because its now a top tier ship, and then people would complain there are not enough mid tier ships.

I mean, i'd love 2 large hardpoints, 2 medium hardpoints, and better manouverability on the Asp... oh, and stronger shields, etc.... but then it would no longer be a low-mid tier ship, it would be a high end ship.

Instead of reducing the time it takes to go vast distances, it would be better to change the game so that traveling is not simply a means to an end but part of the game. Things need to happen along the way that makes every jump meaningful exciting (not always in a negative way) and not something you're doing just to get to where you're going. Just like Supercruise, where currently the only mechanic in the game to spice that borefest up is interdictions. More events need to be added to both. That would be a proper fix, not buff ships over and over to compensate for boredom.

Great answer! Wouldn't you agree, FD ?

You raise good points (as usual ;) )

How about this then - I thought of it whilst having a shower...

The FSD Booster Module

The FSD Booster module increases the jump range of a ship's FSD by a certain amount.

The penalty for installing such a module is increased fuel and power usage, as well as taking up a module slot on a ship. In addition, FSD cooldown takes longer after each jump.

The bigger the class, the larger the Jump boost, and the more demand is made upon fuel and power.

I reckon something like that would work.
