The CODEX

We spoke about squadrons, mining and a little bit about exploration...but we don't know much about the CODEX.

I'm really curious to know how this tool will work out (perhaps it's the personnal computer they're talking about in Galnet ?).

Could be a huge improvement to the game and I can't wait to know more about it. It could flesh out what we can discover in-game, highlight your discoveries, be more connected to what happens in game and much more.

And what about the galaxy that they'll divise in regions ? It must have a goal ? Exploration quests related / regions ? More "personnality" added to each regions (one region known for tis black holes, the other one for specific spatial anomalies...).

What are your thoughts about it ?

I don't think we know enough about it yet, to be able to speculate much. For me though, codex has the potential to be one of the most important inclusions since Horizons 2.0.

Codex getting integrated into the exploration game-play loop ( breadcrumb trails eventually leading to big discoveries)

Things I'd also like to see but don't think they would go for it.
Some big discoveries leading to new blueprints at the human tech broker. (improved FSD jump range, new exploration ship(s), module to improve supercruise agility etc). Maybe even some unique alien tech.

We know less than nothing about this "codex". How can we even start to speculate about something we have no idea what it is in the slightest.

I'll start anyway: Codex in latin means code, tree trunk and a collection of laws or rules.
Ye that doesn't help much does it.

Shameless copypasta from the ED Wiki:

Game Director Laurence Oldham said "The codex will log your discoveries and the things that you've found, but will also act as a kind of encyclopedia so giving more depth and context to the things that you've found and also possibly hinting at other things that you might be able to find out there."

Sandro Sammarco said "We will add a Codex in the fourth chapter of Beyond that will keep track of pilots’ exploration achievements and offer more context and data on discoveries. It’s like an in-game encyclopedia and filling it will be a lot of fun. The codex will also hint at additional sites to explore based on previously visited locations and will offer a personal narrative to complement each commander’s play style."

Q4 is going to be the time to play the exploration role. I know I will.

I'm not expecting much. So not going to speculate. Hoping its not a spoiler list though.
It will either be a game changer for explorers or a grind list.
You have discovered 2/10 red stars discover more to unlock next level. Kinda junk.
I really hope its the first.

Personal Wiki/stara-pedia.

It's a fancy logbook. It will record what you do or see or learn rather than add to what you do.

Well...people are speculating about space legs so we can speculate about something coming sooner :p I also think that it has the potential to be a big inclusion that is quite forgotten by players (since FDev didn't talked to much about it).

Hahahah dream on... It'll be a screen with a list of things and a few lines that someone in the office wrote during their toilet break.

I hope not ;)

Thanks ! Love the "The codex will also hint at additional sites to explore based on previously visited locations and will offer a personal narrative to complement each commander’s play style." - If it's well handled it could bring some great adventures / explorations for CMDRs. CODEX + all the new exploration stuff will really bring fresh air to this part of the game...I seriously can't wait to know more !

I don't think they'll spoil stuff...FDev love to let players find stuff by their self with Cannons and other big groups.

I would love to see exploration quests related though (not in the CODEX). Like "Collect data into a lightning storms...we heard plenty of them could be find in X region of the galaxy but be careful CMDR - those storms could destroy your ship in one second"...Sandro told that there would be dangerous stuff to discover out there (it was much needed).

I hope you're right. Personally, my expectation is limited to a sort of in-game Wiki hidden in some side-panel menu. Which will become obsolete after about a week when people realize that external resources (the actual Wiki, the Canonn codex...) are updated faster and more frequently than the in-game one.

The UI will be clunky, convoluted and pretty much useless. Also data cannot be shared or sorted and there'll be no search implemented. To everyone's relief (except for consollers), the ED Api will expose data, so third-party sites will make it useful.

But I could be wrong.

That's it.

And squadrons will be just tags in front of gamers.
Exploration will be clicking the fire button at the right moment to get infos on planets.
Mining will be clicking the fire button at the right moment to get minerals.

That's all.

10 minute worth of gameplay design.

Sorta sums up my feelings on the matter as well.

What I *expect to see*, is something on the level of the Mass Effect Codex or the Civiliopedia from the Civilization games (Civilization: Beyond Earth in particular has a FANTASTICALLY good iteration of it, other flaws of that game notwithstanding).

I'm not about to hold my breath, though, and I'm half-preparing myself to have my hopes dashed. I'm about as equally hopeful that they will blow my expectations out of the water with how well they pull it off.

Just remains to be seen what they come out with I guess.

edit: In other words, as Winterwalker pointed out....

The Codex has a lot of potential. And that's rather sort of the problem when it comes to Fdev.

I hope they revamp the explo system too. All pre-explored systems should be seeable in the map, along with their details.

lol...lot of enthusiasm here ;)
As per usual...
