The Corvette: less fire power than a FAS for 10x the price...

I have to admit I really like the way the Corvette looks. 2 huge PAs is cool. But…

In a CZ - what I thought would be the natural habitat of a Corvette - that ship simply is less effective than a FAS.
The 2 huge PAs are useless against NPCs at anything further away than 200m.
Without the 2 huge PAs it has less firepower than a FAS.
Against Anacondas it's braindead jousting as those NPC Anacondas do nothing but boost, reverse U-turn, boost.

To bad that the Corvette looks so good otherwise I would simply sell that thing.

Edit: sorry for the rant. If somebody has some advice how to use the Corvette effectively, please share it. There are probably a lot of happy Corvette pilots out there.

Just fill it with gimballed pulse lasers and max the shields

Go kill stuff

It works

You're unable to hit targets with PAs unless they're within 200m??? Wow, you REALLY need to get some skills. At 200m, ANYBODY can reliably hit targets with the PAs. I reliably (>75%) hit targets at 500m, 50% hit targets at 750m, and 50% hit straightline targets at 1.5km. Hitting a Vulture at 500m is hard but when then get a little closer, I'm able to hit them 50% but I have to carefully choose their flight path and time it right.
.
My consistent advice to those wanting to try the PAs is to fire at least 1000 shots before you say no to them. And expect to fire 5000 shots before you offer advice on whether they're useful. Complaining about PA performance with anything less than 5000 shots of experience indicates (to me) that the problem is an OP problem, not a PA problem.

An all gimbaled pulse configuration on a Corvette is a perfectly good waste of the ship's design and intent. The ship wasn't designed for spending all of it's time shooing away eagles and vipers. Gimbaled pulse are too weak against medium and larger ships, the intended targets of the corvette. For PVE, I'm using 2 huge PAs and all gimbaled beams that I switch to fixed upon chaff. This configuration works really well for PVE but not so much for PvP stealth ships.

Yes I loved the looks but worse agility than the Python and its main arsenal is ... fixed (PAs)? No waaaay. If there were RESes with Condas, Pythons and Cutters that combo might work. But since a RES has a mix, the Corvette does worse - on aggregate - than a dogfighter like the FAS, FdL, Clipper or Vulture. (and that's before we talk about horrid jump and rebuy).

Thanks FDev for putting it behind a soul crushing grind wall (fed rank), otherwise I may have given in to temptation and then lost 15m on resale.

3 pulse lasers and 2 MC tend to quickly chew through anything you might encounter in PvE. And very easy to use.

I took an all turreted Corvette to a Military Strike Zone. I just cruised round and round while the turrets did their work. About once an hour, two or three npcs ganged up on it, so I had to use a shield cell, but I was still able to watch TV while I got my 10,000 merits for PP rank 5 at about 650 merits an hour. The next week, I tried it again with all gimballed burst lasers, targetting individual ships. The score rate was about the same, though it was very tedious trying to get and keep targets in range. The Corvette, like the Anaconda is just too slow to make it fun.

Don't really agree with all the Corvette hate.. A rate thrusters + FA Off= plenty agile enough for gimbals and fixed

I was really not much of a fan of the Conda.. I don't even mind the horrible jump range as it makes taking it to fight an event.

press CTRL + ALT + SPACE > turn around to face it and press (ALT +) F10 to enjoy and capture it's beauty. I'm a huge fan of all Gutamaya ships and 100% Empire alligned, but I really dig the look of a Federal Corvette. It just looks like a mini-Farragut Battle Cruiser.

Can't say much about any other use of a Corvette

Heresy? Maybe but, I suggest you trade out the PA's for Gimbled canon. They are powerful shots, that will be on target a lot longer. This could keep you solid while you get better acquainted with flying a giant fighter. If there comes a time when the gimbles make it too easy, get yourself some PA's again.

Try using 2 large "fixed" beams for your Huge hardpoints and the rest turreted pulse lasers (very useful for smaller/faster targets). When it comes to firepower it would absolutely murder an FAS. Its power distributor is 2 classes higher, which means you can keep those 2 large beams going for quite a while, and they do a lot of damage especially when combined with all the other hardpoints. With this set up you can constantly spam your turrets with just 2 pips to weapons. You have two class 1, two class 2, and one class 3 turrets that are basically shooting non stop. When you get into good position, put 4 pips to weapons and let the 2 large beams lose as well. Its unbelievable how fast you can vaporize npc's with this set up.

Also dont forget about the massive armor you can have on the Corvette, and huge shields. And even more importantly it has 2 class 7 slots available for SCB's. In case you arent aware, these dont scale from class to class. In other words A7 SCB doesnt have 7x more capacity than an A1 SCB, its has about 120x more capacity. In fact a single class A7 SCB has more restore capacity than all the SCB's you could fit on a FAS and FDL put together. This is a really big deal. You pop a single A7 SCB and despite of having massive shields, it will restore almost 2 shield rings and you have a total of 10 uses. The Corvette is a beast, to put it lightly.

Sorry for the slight exaggeration for dramatic effect. I use PAs on my FAS and like the PAs. It's just that in a CZ with a lot of small ships PAs aren't the first choice against those small ships. A few Eagles and Viper IV can be distracting. Without the PAs the firepower of the Corvette is limited, but if most potential targets are small ships the huge PAs are useless most of the time.

You a right, it's not a PA problem it's a NPC problem ;) I was just extremely annoyed after the thousands (yes, again exaggeration for dramatic effect) NPC who made a slight movement dodging the PA shot just milliseconds before the PAs hit. Just a slight movement to the side and back, as if nothing happened. A slight rotation to let the plasma balls fly by and then rotate back. Argh.

This is really annoying, especially when their cockpit is on the other side of the ship, there's no way for them to "see" it coming, and yet they dodge it precisely, over and over. The Vette is great, love it in RES, love it in CZ, I keep playing with the loadout, I'll let you know what I settle on.

And then imagine jumping into a CZ and hearing the "Capital class ship signature detected…" and a Farragut entered the CZ. Spend most of the time in that CZ pressing F10 :)

I have the suspicion that my problem is, that I try to fly the Corvette like a fighter.

Hm, interesting. I will try it.

I feel your pain. I kept thinking, these HP's (redacted), over and over. I try to rationalize by remembering the shields are great. I can't think about the armor because of the Conda. I just think of the Vette like a really well shielded Python, for a stupidly high price and rank requirement. Remember the chant of the Vette owner "it gets better when better huge weapons are released". Say it over and over, and maybe you won't end up selling it.

FWIW, I stopped trying to make the small HP's useful, and left them empty. Two Lg beams, two med beams, one Lg PA in the bottom slot because of convergence. Fire the beams, try to hit with the PA, go back to beams, repeat.

Good luck.

The Corvette's firepower is definitely there if you have the right outfitting. You can basically 1 shot large ships after you get their shields down. That being said I do agree that the FAS is far more efficient at killing simply because of it's handling and speed. In RES sites I tend to make about 1-2 Mil more per hour with the FAS because I can engage my targets quicker and position myself for maximum damage output.

PVE build:
2x huges: large fixed beam lasers
2x small: small gimballed pulse lasers
2x miedum: medium gimballed multi-cannon
large: choice of medium gimablled multi-cannon or large gimballed cannon or large plasma

Whatever you do don't give in to this notion that huge hardpoints are useless and you should downgrade the 2 slots to large because this simply isn't true

I only use class 2 PAs, but I've noticed something about them.

Between being fixed only, slow rate of fire and projectile speed, and the massive damage per hit, PAs are one of the most, probably THE most challenging and rewarding weapons in the game to use effectively.

I make no claims of mastery, but I can hit fairly reliably at short range (and my DBS is quite able to keep me there), and I am slowly improving my accuracy at long range. When you correctly judge the curve of your opponents flight and drop a plasma round neatly onto them from 1km or more, relying almost totally on your experience and judgement (since the lead indicator doesn't factor in a curved flight path), it is an immensely satusfying feeling, and the massive damage inflicted really makes it worthwhile.
