The Current Direction of Elite Dangerous is....

Honestly dsteve, I don't know what you expected from this place. It's the same 10 names always saying things are great and things are fine.

You are right that it's hard to tell what the activity level really is and steam doesn't give a full image. Neither does this data I put out a couple of days ago:

Patch 3.0.3 was announced at 11:10am on the 19/03/18 and 12 hours later the thread had 576 responses.
Patch 3.0.4 was announced at 3.33pm on the 26/03/18 and 12 hours later the thread had 242 responses.

But there is a definite feel of interest dropping in game, in myself and around here. As I stated in another thread, players tend to leave with a fizzle rather than a bang. The bang is normally one last desperate attempt to get whatever the problem they perceive fixed before they give in entirely. I think the community has had a recent collective bang and now we are witnessing the fizzle. FDev should be far more concerned by this than the bang and shouldn't for a second think that people have just reached a contented state with their product.

The big bang theory. Love that show [big grin]

I love the lies, damn lies and statistics in this thread. Here's an idea: How about people try to interpret the data objectively instead of trying to massage it to fit a point of view?

People claiming that the Steam users are not a representative sample and can be discounted need their head read. So do people who think a flattish player number is healthy after so many sales.

Mixed reviews. 3 stars. High churn. Farmville In Space?

Actually, comparing to ED to Farmville is sort of rude. To the latter one. In terms of progression, Farmville just smokes ED.

I too cannot imagine that people find steam numbers around 100k pleasing when there were 1.3 million of copies sold.

I feel bad now :( See, I don't play Elite through steam and I know I am not the only one. So every time someone trots out steam player stats I feel a little sorry for them because they are basing their rants on a subset of the players.

It's getting kind of boring having to repeat things over and over.

Check out ED total sales, then use something like steam spy or steam charts to see the number of steam accounts that own a copy of ED.

You will realise the Majority of people bought ED via steam, not the other way round.

What about the other 500 or so 'Dissenters' who log in everyday and say 'everything is rubbish'? Don't they get a say in this?

Can you provide some evidence/stats that show the balance of opinion on these forums please?

It's hard to provide evidence when people are constantly jumping the fence.

I was a fan boy back at the beginning, spent well over £100 on the game and loved the way it started and the potential.

Since David Braben handed the wheel to someone else, jumped out the plane with his parachute and landed in planetcoaster land, the game development and mechanics have taken a nose dive into oblivion, and It made me cross to the dark side.

I am still enjoying the game and could give two (maybe three) farts if anyone else likes it or not.

So far as I can tell, not once in the past year has the ratio of positive to negative posts, steam 'stats', or number of sentences written in all caps has had any discernable impact on what I see and experience in game, so...

It's been the same thing every year after they release a new patch. The game is thriving for a few weeks then the game dies out because they add nothing of value and the content is shallow, non existent and barebone at best.

I think one of the most interesting aspects of the latest batch of "Steam Stats" is this gem:

SeIGHIl.jpg

The "All Time Peak" of players is 18,039, set way back in 2015. According to the "Last 30 Days," we reached a peak of 14,435, just 3,604 short of tying the record. Game dying? Hardly! If anything, I should thank the OP for pointing out how much better Elite: Dangerous is doing the least few months!

Really? Given the number of copies sold, what does this tell you about the number of customers sticking around?

Nothing, since the steam charts numbers don't tell us anything about it. They just show how many players are logged in simultaneously at a specific time on a specific platform. How do you see any correlation to CMDRs sticking around?

The info you posted, my friend, is a load of bull.
There are only two graphs worth comparing for that regard. Screw the graphs even, just this would do.

So 1.2 million people finding this game to not be worth their time is a sign of its perfection?
This game have near infinite potential. Which is gimped by the direction to being Super-Mario-In-Space it took.
Not trying to achieve this potential makes those 1.2 millon people as good as scammed.
And yes, this is the Steam data. New players only basically.
Your post us a lot of bull, do you honestly believe that every owner of Elite must be logged in 24/7? Could you guys please finally understand that you have no idea what you are talking about and which numbers you are failing to compare?

If people were sticking around, the number of people logged on would rise steadily over time as more sales are made. It isn't.

I did that earlier and proved that the game is quite healthy, especially if you compare it to other 3 years old games.

Yeah, I don't agree with op's notion the end times are coming any time soon, but his data does show that a whole lot of players came back to the game for beyond, played for a short while, and then left again very shortly after. In fact, if you look at the whole graph, the beyond update has the sharpest spike in more players playing, AND the sharpest and quickest drop in players playing ever in the history of the game.

Seems to indicate to me that a lot of people came back to the game with high hopes for beyond and then left after their hopes turned out to be misplaced.

That happens with every game and every major update. And no, the graph doesn't show the sharpest and quickest drop in players. The graph shoes wrong information that is flawed due to the nature it's represented (dismissing earlier numbers, just using peak numbers for the first 3 years and using lots of data points for the last months). I explained all of that in a different post.

If everyone could read and understand it and stop posting false information, that would be great ;).

Just to clarify (again...):
These sharp spikes and drops existed before. Due to the way steamcharts gathers and stores data they are no longer visible for events that lie in the past. You can easily check this yourself by hovering over the graph and count how many data points exists for the past and how many data points exist for the present. Since they are deleting most of the old data points and only keep a few the graph looks flattened / smooth for old events and spiky for the current player numbers. The graph is wrong because it compares two different sets of data.

The idea that if a game is popular, everyone who purchased a copy is constantly playing that one game is a fallacy. Consider this: GTA V sold over 9 million copies on Steam, yet today's peak player count was ~90K. Using the logic that 1 copy sold = 1 daily player if the game is popular, this means that GTA V is a deeply unpopular game. I think we know that is not the case. :) The average player doesn't religiously play a game day in and day out. Instead, gamers jump into and out of a game as the mood strikes them. Elite is no different.

Again, the thing I find so interesting about Elite's recent numbers is how there is an upturn in peak player count. Typically, a game will enjoy a downwards burn, especially if the game in not being well received (as many critics of Elite allege). With ED, we are seeing the opposite: the game is now growing its player base. That is no small accomplishment!

Who can tell directions with this game without a proper planetary navigation tool anyway ????

Just guessing: -90°/0° ?

Well I'm surprised to see this thread still going the next morning and I see its still mostly an argument of how statistics work.

The problem is that this entire thread is an opinion based OP that chose a set of data to support his statement. I did the same recently with one about forum activity but I stated how it was only supporting my opinion rather than proving it so the thread was much more civil. You should be discussing the opinion put forward, not the data because as people have rightly pointed out, the data is sketchy and flawed. Its interesting and shows a potential trend but does not prove Jack poop.

I actually agree with the OPs opinion that the direction of Elite is away from the one I'd like. That is geographically downwards I suppose but as its only my opinion, I also see how it could be upwards for some.

For me it's how the focus is being placed on Xeno narrative and discovering stuff in the black. I fully respect what Canon do as a group but it is frustrating to see how the developers treat them like a favourite child because they are interested in the content currently being pumped out. There are much larger player groups that are far more interested in BGS, faction building and getting those megaships but currently I feel they are a secondary objective because we didn't conform to the content currently being produced. It's like they made a game for themselves and put some stuff on the side for other people to enjoy while funding their own area of the game.

All that said, if you like the current Xeno narrative then you are probably very pleased. That's your opinion and it's impossible for me to state otherwise.
