Hey all, I thought I'd start a thread for all us noobs to share our experiences about Day 1 of Elite. Where did you go, what did you do, how did you find it?
Backers are free to share their experiences too, but of course we know this isn't Day 1 for you, perhaps some of you have noticed the galaxy become a busier place, for many of you it may well just be business as usual, and I'm already fairly familiar with some of your exploits have read about them or even watched you all; but still come along and comment and share in the experience.
So me. I'm playing as CMDR Corvus Schmetterling and have the mercenary edition (which I'm sure most here do, but just in case there are a few here who didn't preorder but bought it today, you get an Eagle in a secondary location as well as your Sidewinder).
I was 'born' at Trevithick Dock in LH3447, that is just an outpost and has no commodities market so I didn't do anything there, I just left the station right away and headed to Worlidge Dock, which was the nearest Coriolis station I could find. I saw a fellow CMDR outside, I can't remember their name, I presumed I'd be seeing quite a few but so far that one's the only one I've seem. Once docked I looked for something in the commodities market selling at significantly less than the galactic average, and also looked at the bulletin board. I saw a mission to carry 3t of scrap to Hartsfield Plan in Potriti for approximately 4000CR. I also picked up 1t of Lepidolite to fill the remainder of my hold, plotted a route to Potriti and set off on my first interstellar voyage.
The route to Potriti took me through Eravete, I noticed that the route-planning system much requested in Gamma had been implemented as I was immediately targeted on Potriti, so I didn't stay in Eravete and set off immediately. Hartsfield Plant, when I got there, was my first outpost (besides the one I started in), so my first experience of 'Docking request denied...' Eventually I did get in, and deliver my scrap as well as selling my Lepidolite. There were no missions so once again I decided to find the cheapest commodity in relation to the galactic average and take it somewhere it might sell for more than the average. I decided to take 4t of Rutile to Yakabugai.
My first attempt at docking with Serebrov Station in Yakabugai was a bit of a disaster. Some kind of skirmish was going on outside as I arrived at this giant station, fingers crossed I didn't get caught in any cross-fire. I requested permission and got into the station alright, but a malfunction in docking control meant they wouldn't let me land on my designated pad. Foolishly I decided to cancel the docking request before leaving the station, was promptly dispatched by the station's interior lasers before I could escape, I'd lost my first Sidewinder, the trusty vessel that carried me on my first venture into space was no more. My escape pod was retrieved and delivered back to Hartsfield, and a couple of fines for loitering and something else that flashed up on the screen too quick for me to read were extracted. With those and also the loss of my cargo of Rutile I was severely down on cash, I had enough however to buy another 4t of Rutile and go again. This time, when the docking control malfunctioned, I exited the station and re-requested permission, and was successful.
Another minor incident at Serebrov was a security scan as I was leaving with 4t of Titanium, bound for Chamunda, I could tell Serebrov was going to be no friend to me in my endeavours. Chamunda was a double-star system and the only station, Gidzenko Ring was orbiting the other star from the one I came out of hyperspace in front of, meaning I had to travel a pretty long distance in supercruise to get there. Following my usual method of deciding what to take and where to take it, I picked up 4t of Computers and set a course for my home system of LH3447. Upon arriving in LH3447 I realised there was also an Orbis station in this system which I had missed the first time, and so I set off to Dalton Gateway, which would once again require crossing the chasm between two stars in a binary system.
As I approached Dalton Gateway, I got to thinking about unidentified signal sources. I'd seen a few of them here and there and had never stopped to check them out, so I stopped at one just over the pole of Dalton's parent planet. It turns out I had crashed a wedding party! A Lakon Type 7 labelled as 'Wedding Barge' sailed through the vacuum accompanied by four or five attendance sidewinders. Nothing further to see here, I continued to Dalton Gateway and sold my computer parts, there was some more skirmishing going on, this time inside the station, I've no idea what happened, I'm just happy those lasers are accurate.
Actually I sold the computer parts at a tiny loss (20CR), I had misjudged that the economy of LH3447 (LHBAAT if you don't like the numbers, maybe I'll take to calling it Baat) was the type where computers would fetch a high price. I could have carried the computers somewhere else, but that would have just taken up more time, and cost more in fuel, and with a loss of only 20CR there was really nothing to lose by getting rid of them. I wanted the cargo space for something that had caught my eye. Dalton was selling Animal Meat for almost 200CR below the galactic average, the biggest potential profit I'd seen yet. Checking the bulletin board I also saw that I could pick up an information-carrying mission to Eravete; Eravete was en-route back to Serebrov, and I felt there would be a market for my meat there. So with 4t of Animal Meat, I set off for my waypoint in Eravete.
This was the second time I'd been to Eravete, but this time I wasn't just passing through. I headed to an outpost called Sylvester City where, not only was I able to deliver my message, but I could pick up two more. One for the Federation and one for a political organisation seeking to bring the Federation down (business is business ey?) Both of these were destined for Yakabugai; one for Serebrov itself, and another for an outpost elsewhere in the system named Aristotle Gateway. I felt I was getting the hang of things down, and I didn't even have to wait for docking permission at Aristotle, so I completed that mission, headed to Serebrov, completed the other and then sold my meat for a tidy profit. I now have about 9000CR up from my initial 1000, I would have broken 10,000 if it weren't for the Serebrov Docking Incident. This is in maybe 3 hours of gameplay.
Now I think I'll leave things for now. I've noticed taking Robotics to Serebrov might be a lucrative deal, I've seen a mission offering to buy them at way above their market value, so I'll keep and eye out and see if I can see more. The only place I could buy robotics however will be a nightmare to get to, despite only being 17LY away, it would require something like a 50-system jump. I bought some data from Universal Cartographics to see if I could find any other sources of it, but no such luck.... I don't think the trade route is lucrative enough to justify 50 jumps, so I could just wait until I have a better ship and jump straight to it, we'll see.
My intention was never to just trade, I wanted to get involved in more exciting stuff, smuggling maybe, but might be advised to have some more money to invest before I go doing anything like that. I was also looking at some of the combat missions, they pay well, very well, like 100,000CR for a few kills, or an assassination. I would guess they aren't something to be tried in an un-upgraded Sidey though so I'll leave those for now. I was actually on my way to fetch my Eagle from Dalton when the missions and meat sidetracked me, so I guess I'll head back there and see what I can do.
Sorry if I've had the most boring first day ever (to read that is, I enjoyed doing it), still getting used to things, hopefully someone else will have a much better story than I do.
