The Dead End's Circumnavigation Expedition

I'm happy to see the group has grown since I last looked in on this thread - I am excited for all of you, and I hope everyone gets what they are looking for out of it.

I also noticed quite a lot of really good information and tips in this thread that have organically surfaced, and it might not be a bad idea to collate those into one of the early posts for those who might want to join up as it gets closer to launch. Things like the concept and execution of fuel dumping, the heat testing planet, how to get mats/data for the most desirable Engineering (or a link to the one from Distant Stars, that was pretty good, as I recall), and some links that show target builds for some ships. Basically, a prep sheet to help newer players, or those whose Exploration experience is a trip to the California Nebula (no offense meant by that) that want to stretch out further. This is not required, certainly, but it would give you one location to point towards for common questions (maybe include a short FAQ as well), and it's kind of like a Welcome Mat, in a way.

Don't add me to the list (yet), but I am very tempted to join - I have some obstacles in the way, and I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to tackle them in time. I have a lot of mats gathering to do, more Engineering, both Trade and Combat Elite to get, the trip I'm currently on to finish before doing any of the above, and on top of it all, there is a good chance that I will be getting a job upgrade in the next 4-5 months, so I don't even know where my life will be at that time. This Expedition is on the now-very-ambitious-list, though.

On a different, but related note - if anyone has a spreadsheet that helps them easily filter out (as in, highlight) Engineering mats they don't need (or won't ever need), I would much appreciate being able to view it. I would love to be able to clean out those mats and data that I will likely never need. I hope I explained what I'm looking for well enough.

I think the best and easiest "spreadsheet" is EdEngineer. With EDE, you can filter out every engineer mod you know you need or dont need and then it shows you the mats you'll need/dont need.
Theres no excuse for not installing EdEngineer. ;)

And what comes to joining to this expedition, theres no panic yet as launch date is still TBA and definitely not before 2.4.
Also, our traveling speed is going to be really slow, maybe 1000Ly / day at maximum, so i think anyone can keep up with us, or catch us if left behind.

Why You Need A Rail Gun On Your Exploration Vessel'n Stuff

Caught you by surprise there, didn't I? If you'll bear with me, I'll get back to the title in a sec. I've gathered links to a few guides & tips from the forum and this thread that you may find handy.

Other excellent guides and faq's may exist out there, and I apologize upfront for not having found them and listed them here. Do feel free to post a link to them here in this thread.

The Popular Guide To Exploration
A well written guide which covers the basics of exploration by Spacecat.

A List of Less Obvious Engineer Modifications for Exploration Vessels
As the title says. An excellent thread started by goemon.

Why You Need A Rail Gun On Your Exploration Vessel
Now back to the Rail Gun as promised; do you want me to shoot the Thargoids or what? No, not at all, here's why you need it: If you're a fringer (just made that up), an explorer who travels near the edges of the galaxy, you may most likely find your next system just out of reach, even with a J3 jump. Now stop swearing and blaming Felicity for giving you such a bad FSD roll. You may realize that by dumping a little fuel, you may be able to reach the system after all. "But", you say, "I can just jump back and forth between systems a few times, or even just stay in super cruise for a few hours!". Well, the problem with the former is that a neighboring system may be too far off to time the fuel consumption just right, and you can see problem with the latter.

Stop being a tease and tell me!
Right, turns out that Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn for a small price and as a special effect, will mod your Rail Gun to use Plasma Slugs, which uses fuel as ammo. Fuel for ammo. Let's just let that one sit for a moment. "Wait, what? does that mean that by firing my Rail Gun, I can adjust the amount of fuel in my fuel tank?". Yup.

TL;DR; Jump to the max by dumping fuel with your lightweight class 1 Plasma Slug Rail Gun. Go see Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn about a slug.
Why You Also Need A Mining Laser (Now stop it, I say!)
You find yourself marooned in a system on the fringe, after all you are a fringer, right? Next system is a J1 jump away, you've run out of jumponium, and your srv is gone seconds after uttering the famous last words "I can make that crater easy!". Turns out it wasn't and look where's that gotten you. Stranded, left to die a humiliating death by suffocation.

Luckily, you brought a turreted mining laser and can now proceed to the nearest rock to get some J1 mats while mining. "Wait, that's it? And why turreted?". Yup, that's it. Turreted? Invite friends to do some deep space drilling.

Rescue by mining laser was made famous by CMDR Chiggy in this epic rescue mission.
The Most Important Rule(s)
1) Pay Attention
2) Don't Panic
3) If In Panic, See Rule 2)

Or, like me, just refuel just enough to make the next jump (warning, it can be VERY risky. One mistake and you are trapped) and maintain a decent amount of materials (but you will need to land a bit more frecuently).

By the way, not sure if you're collecting points, but I found this on my run, and thought it might be useful.

Basically, system Exahn AZ-S D3-8, located on the Scutum-Centaurus arm.

As for why... well, here's the system view, with the relevant planet highlighted. Not often you find a 1.0% Polonium world, and thought it useful to point out just in case.

Bill Turner won't, he only does PAs. Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn will.

Hah, this is the mistake i did. I mined all that Bromellite just to get Bootstrap open, just to notice that he does lightweighted Plasma Accelerators, not Rail Guns. :D
But, you can get plasma slug with PA also, so it wont go wasted if you want to open Bill. ;)

Thank you, Hanekura, system added to the route. We're continuing the lookout for interesting systems along the route.

Don't suppose it also uses the log data to keep a tally of mats, like Picard did until it died?

Z...

EDDiscovery wins for me - you do know you can filter your routes, right? I can just see the routes I did for DWE, my first trip out ever, trips to the 'Rift... I usually colour code them too.

I'm still amazed FD have not hired the EDDiscovery folk and gotten them to put it all in game, to be honest.

Z...

If they pay me as much as i get in my current job, or I could take a 25% pay cut maybe.. it would be more interesting work ;-)

Good luck on the expo.

If any of you guys need help on EDD, join us on our discord server https://discord.gg/cG9svX

We will be glad to help you. After install it should just run, pick up your journals, and display them automatically with your commander name. It will take time to download the star data and install it, so its best left for a while on first run just grunting thru the work. Then you can worry later about EDSM integration etc.

And I know its a bit overwhelming, we have lots of functionality now in it (>10 panels worth of info and more coming soon). We also have voice prompts etc. But you don't need to get into all that immediately.

Thank you! :D My in-game CMDR name is Yates. I can't wait for the expedition to begin! (Coincidentally, I'm near Waypoint #8 currently but I haven't passed #1-#7)

This is interesting as I just set off on a counter clockwise trip a month ago...but it hasn't really been happening. Now the reason it hasn't been happening is why my I'm interested in this.

What keeps me going on these things is the interim milestones of meeting other people at key points! I notice the expedition has a mapped route, as in points on the galaxy map, is the idea to have meets at specific dates at each of those points as that's what would keep me in it? It doesn't have to be a crazy schedule or anything, the meet points could even be quite far apart in time, just some sense you're not 'doing it alone'.

So - those systems marked in EDDiscovery are they just a sense of direction or is the plan to meet around them?

Done some checking: Meet-ups bi weekly, 13k apart. So it looks like they're happening!

Hi CMDR, we'll plan the meetings in between, near or at the waypoints. The plan is to meet bi-weekly in systems roughly 13KLy apart.

Edit: Ninja'ed by myself by proxy!

Entry updated.

We'll be looking for potential interesting extremely-easy-to-find basecamp candidates along the route (submitted in the same format as the DWE). In fact we may even borrow one or two basecamps from DWE, Beagle Point being the obvious one.

Stay safe, CMDR.

Got it. So rough area (system). Rough timescale. Got it.

So....I'm really bad at grinding out engineers - is there a need for top end Anaconda-like jump ranges?

I tend to prefer AspE or DBX and I have 43-46 I think, though they're not the lightest they could be at the moment (some of the insides are higher end than truly needed for exploration).
