Ships The Eagle *needs* a class 3 powerplant

All Elite ships and their module sized are built to size, the only way they could change it to class 3 is if they changed the physical size of the Eagle.

And my Python needs a class 8 power plant.
And my Vulture definitely needs a class 5.
:)

Fully agreed on the Vulture. The Viper could use a class 4. I do not see how the Python could use a class 8 though. Most builds I can come up with could get away with a class 6.

He was heckling you man. :p As stated above only way to do what you ask is make the whole ship bigger, like let's say the Viper that's already there. You see the point we're making? In Vulture's case it's the Asp the Vulture would be size upgraded to and thus lose it's manuverability.

I was just joking.
The current design adds limitations to your builds that require good energy and module management.
That, for me at least, is a big part of the fun. I think it is brilliant that FD designed it this way.
I would not really want a bigger power plant in my Vulture. I love it the way it is.

Some aren't happy unless they can put everything they want so they don't have to sit and decide "ok what do I *need*?"

I think what FD did adds realism and forces you to make choices. This is a very good thing for a game like this.

I am very much interested in the development of tanks in WW2. You can compare how it worked there, in real life, to what FD has implemented in this game.
When they designed a medium hull for a tank, there was only so much you could do with the engine, and this also influenced the amount of armour you could use, and that influenced weight, and that influenced the speed etc. Also the size of the hull limited the size of the turret, which limited the size of the gun you could put in etc. etc. More weight influenced the type of tracks, the transmission etc.
Choices, choices, choices.

I love the fact that FD has brought these realistic limitations to Elite. They did an extremely good job.

100% agreed. :D

i am pretty sure, the new imperial eagle that they will add soon, will have no power issues, since it will have a medium weapon slot.

I bet you will still have to manage your energy use and modules/weapons you put in the craft.
It would be unrealistic if that was not the case.
Even my Python with it's 51 mil credit A7 power plant needs careful thought and management.
Everybody always tries to push his vessel to the max and FD have made sure they gave us all kinds of seductive modules to do so.

The imperial Eagle with it's medium weapon slot will only invite more such pushing to the max :).
If that hull is the same size as the Eagle Mk. II it will most likely have the same power plant.
So, you can see where this is going....

Perhaps the Imperials have invented a smaller class 3 powerplant?
We will see, but I doubt it.
It could perhaps have less internal compartments to make room for the bigger power plant.

Is anything at all known about the Imperial Eagle?

Pretty sure it was announced that it would have a bigger PP, along with a med and two small HPs.

Just to throw it out there:

Military ships:
Advantages: Manoeuvrability, hardpoint placement, Price and size (smaller, harder to hit)
Disadvantage: Heat buildup, jump range, power management, cargo space

Multi-role ships:
Advantages: Heat buildup, jump range, power management, cargo space
Disadvantage: Manoeuvrability, hardpoint placement, Price and size (bigger, easier to hit)

It's built for balance.
I think I covered everything, I was thinking mainly Vulture Vs Clipper for that comparison. Or Viper Vs Cobra.

The thing is, balance was seriously changed with powerplay. Prismatic shields make the multirole ships much stronger, while still leaving enough power for shield cells. The old combat ships can't compete anymore for the most part. The Fer de Lance manages, prismatic shield plus 4 burst lasers and a cannon work, with the ship built A-rated. That is enough. I can live with having to retract weapons to power shield cells. The Vulture gets by, simply because it's built for overkill. Even with B and C rated modules it's fine due to the sheer firepower of 2x Class 3. It's Viper and Eagle that hurt. And all the arguments about size and realism are null and void. There are much more glaring non realistic things in the game for the sake of gameplay. The way it looks, FD have already started a workaround though. The Imperial Courier can be kitted nicely without power issues and so sort of takes the place of the Viper. And the Imperial Eagle looks like it will do the same to the standard Eagle. So apparently the fix is not to change the existing ships, but rather introduce alternative versions, giving the faulty ones away to obsolence.

I kind of get what you mean especially with the Python on the prismatic shields, boosters and cell bank combo it kinda makes the FDL a bit useless.
To be honest the Viper was mostly obsolete to the Cobra anyway with the speed and jump range bonuses. Although I sort of see what you mean now I've looked more closely at the Imperial Eagle.
Haha, maybe they'll release a Viper Mk IV :p

I'm still waiting for a ship in between the ASP and Python range that isn't faction aligned...

Honestly PvP has been a horrible mess since SCB's were put in, then Booster's and Prismatic's have just made it even worse.

Not being able to put too powerful shields on an Eagle is, kind of, a part of it's character. It's a very nimble glass cannon - upset that balance and you remove some of it's defining characteristics. It's a cheap, old, discontinued dogfighter, and it's meant to be one ping one wing. IMHO making it stronger would be a bit like making a ww2 dogfighter game, and then making Zeros super armored and able to take a lot of punishment, or Spitfires able to outrun Me 262's. Ignore ship character and they all become similar and boring. I personally like the Eagle as is, though I wouldn't mind seeing some variants.
