Astronomy / Space The earth is a brown, blue wearing makeup

How much water is on earth ? Siphoned all the water on Earth, and put into a sphere, a small satellite liquid landed on our planet suddenly dry. Oceans, seas, lakes, ice caps, glaciers and rivers, which normally covers more than 70% of 510 million km2 of the earth be reduced to a sphere of only 1385 km in diameter. Water on Earth is like a sheet Gift Paper covering a bowling ball. From space it gives color to our planet, but only a tiny fraction (0.023%) of its mass. This small sphere contains 1.386 billion km3. Soft water represents only 35 million km3. This is the tiny sphere right of the small sphere. The majority of these 35 million km3 is out of reach because it is frozen in ice sheets, or because it is in the bowels of the Earth. The third little blue dot under the tiny sphere contains soft water available. This pinhead is less than 60 kms in diameter. With this tiny reservation as 7 billion people: draw to drink, irrigate their crops, give drink to their farmed animals, run their factories, supply power plants. And also for all other living organisms of the earth.

That's quite mind-blowing. Especially the tiny blob of accessible drinking water that has to be shared by everyone. I love it when people share things like this.

You know, this can be taken a step further, the image below is a comparison of the liquid water volume of Earth, Europa, and Titan to scale.

It is estimated that Europa has over two times and Titan nearly eleven times more liquid water as subsurface oceans than Earth. Only liquid water is considered in these estimates but water ice is also significantly present in Europa and Titan.

The image assumes a mean ocean depth of 4 km, 100 km, and 200 km for Earth, Europa, and Titan, respectively.

With respects to Jupiter's moon Europa, it's heat energy from tidal flexing causes the ocean to remain liquid, this drives geological activity very much like plate tectonics. I think it is about time we head over and go look for the possible shellfish and crustaceans under the ice surface there.
