I thought the latest changes were supposed to give positive rep for the faction who issued the bounty once you claim it. That's what I read in a change log very recently.
 
The rep system is too much of a black box. Put the damned arrows on the faction listing in the warrant sanner screen so we are aware of what will happen before we act... It's bad design currently imo.

OP - I play almost exclusively as a bounty hunter. I started out with the objective of being affiliated with the Empire and thought it safe to bounty hunt in Federal space, as I wouldn't mind the inevitable (or so I thought) reputation loss. Before I knew it, I became friendly and then allied with the Federation - I NEVER discriminated wanted targets - shot everything with a wanted status. I then moved to Empire space and did the exact same thing. Before I knew it I was allied with the Empire. I have about 1300 BH kills and a Master rank.

Moral of the story: shoot ANYTHING that's wanted. Doesn't even matter if they're allied with you - though, if you have a choice, try to go for the non-allied/non-friendly ones. Power on through any minor losses in reputation knowing that when you turn in the next batch of bounty vouchers, you'll likely more than make up for any short term loss in reputation.

Note: I have not tested this in 1.2 production. I did play for half a day in beta 1.2 where I should down some 20-30 or so ships without discriminating based on faction allegiance (though most were not friendly or allied) and this had no impact on my reputation.

I really wonder what kind of mess the code is in order to produce these kind of bugs and the devs not being able to fix them.

IMHO the Reputation system is quite a mess (another one...).

I tested it in Beta 1.2 and saw my reputation whacked big time by shooting Wanted NPC. Rep with major factions and minor as well. And yes, I know how to BH at Nav Beacons.

This is coming from the patch notes of 1.1:

I wonder what rule is set there, as "doesn't necessarily incur" seems to me to be pretty vague...

Has Reputation Changed in 1.2 ?

I was testing how combat had changed after 1.2 and was Bounty Hunting at my local Nav Beacon. I only attacked ships that were 'wanted' and all had some kind of allegiance to one of the Minor Factions in my home system. I happened to glance at the Right Panel Reputation screen and noticed I was Allied to only one and Unfriendly or Hostile to all the others.
If I attack a 'Wanted' ship isn't this a Pirate or Criminal, if so why have I suddenly lost so much reputation with the other Minor Factions in my home system ?
 
I had a slightly similar situation last night as well. At a Nav Beacon and encountered a Wing of 3 NPC, all wanted and all showing as green (I'm Allied with the local controlling faction), it made me stop from opening fire as I wonder what impact this would have on my rating in local. So, could I add my request for further information to this thread as well. Really interested to find out how ratings are now affected.
 
IIRC, I think I noticed this in 1.1 but I spent most of that patch exploring and only came back near the 1.2 release so it may be a more recent server side change.
 
Slightly different track but still reputation... I'd been stuck on "unfriendly" and a rank of warrant officer for ages... pretty much all of 1.1 actually... regardless of how many missions, pirate killing, freeing slaves etc I did for federation allied factions. I played 1.2 for an hour and picked up two non-combat missions for independent minor factions and before I'd even started them I was offered a rank advancement mission. Complete that I was given another system permit and now I'm an ensign and I could buy a dropship (if it wasn't such a rubbish ship :p ) I'm still unfriendly to the feds, but we'll see what happens now.

Pity I'd just decided to give up on the feds and start building ranks with the empire so I can get me an imperial courier when it's released. Oh well, might at least be able to be neutral with the feds before then now.

But yeah, I think they've fixed something with reputation.
 
I noticed the same thing. After a hunting sessions in a RES I found myself "unfriendly" with the Pirates I was hunting, which is logical after all , but also with a negative hit with all factions other than the primary one I am allied with. This does not make any sense - why would other factions be offended by the fact that I am taking out wanted pirates??
 
So does this now mean I have to go to a different system to hunt 'wanted' NPC's, so I don't lose reputation in my own system ? As I said before a wanted ship is usually a Criminal or Pirate so why would the local faction be offended if I attack criminals... not sure I understand the logic to this.
 
Reputation & Factions driving me insane!

What am i doing wrong....

when I first started playing this game I didn't fully get the way the factions and reputation system worked (along with everything else really) but soon realised I was doing something wrong when I became 'unfriendly' to the Federation. I read up a bit about the factions and wanting to become friendly to the federation I took the following precautions when doing some bounty hunting or fighting missions;

I Only fought those that either attacked me first or were WANTED in the system I was in.
I only took missions for Federation allied factions and tried not to kill ships that belonged to other federation allied factions. However, I quickly got sick of constantly checking through the factions screens and contacts screen every time someone tried to shoot me up or whom I was hunting.....It sucked the fun out of fighting and so relied on the 'wanted' in this system precaution.

After weeks of being 'unfriendly' but working my butt off doing tedious 'fetch and carry' missions to improve rep, today I came across 3 federation security force ships battling a dropship that was wanted in the sector. I helped out and joined the fight - making sure not to accidentally cause any friendly fire (which I didn't). But still, the moment the 'wanted' dropship blew up, all the federation ships in the system went red and now I'm HOSTILE!

This factions and Rep system! Its driving me mad! to the point that I cant really be ars'd with the game any more.

I'v enjoyed these first few weeks of playing the game - learning the ropes' and slowly progressing to better ships and weapons and being able to hold my own against bigger and better criminals - but now I have a cobra, its all starting to grind to a tedius halt. progressing further just seems pointless since it'll take too long to amass the exorbitant money needed to upgrade further. The jump is too huge. The thought of how long, how many hundreds of boring fetch and carry missions I would need to do to raise the cash i need to progress simply fills me with dread. I would rather start learning to knit and collect stamps than play these tedious fetch and carry missions ......for a while I thought building up rank in the pilots federation and trying to improve rep would gave me something to work towards whilst playing through the drudgery....but these problems I'm having with rep are just sucking all the fun out of the game for me. Tonight I finally have had enough.

any thoughts out there to keep me from jacking it all in? I really want to support this game but I've hit a wall - a casual gamer wall if you like - I think I just have to admit that this is a game is for hard core space geeks and that I am not one of them.....
 
Please Explain the Reputation System to this PhD Candidate

Ok, first let me explain: Around here, you need a good title for a thread to get noticed, hence the whole PhD thing -- but fwiw it's true, I am defending my PhD dissertation in computer science in a few months (that's more about hard work than about intelligence though).

So why did I start this thread? Well, I find the rep system too black-boxy. Every time I think I understand it, a new exception, corner case, or bug crops ups. I'd like someone to set me straight as far as the rep system goes.

So here is what I currently understand:

- Kill a wanted target, and the aligned factions get upset
- That is, of course, unless they are the ones who placed the bounty

Great. That makes sense. Cool.

Now my questions:

- Where do the major factions fit in?
- How can I tell if killing a target wanted by a minor faction will impact my rep with a major faction?
- What happens in conflict zones when two minor factions are in civil war, but are both aligned to the same major faction?

I would test this all myself, but testing is tedious. The main issues are that feedback is not instant -- changes take a while to show up. And, cashing in combat bonds etc., may also influence rep?

And for what it's worth, I'd vote for a "what would happen if I kill this sucker" panel in the systems menu. A feed-forward (as opposed to feedback) interface if you will. If it takes me 10 extra seconds to consult, I'll use it sparingly to learn the rules and resolve uncertainties, and it won't get in the way too much.

I was always under the assumption that PhD candidates don' t have enough time in the day to bother with nonsense like playing video games; unless of course your doctorate will be based on observing video game related activities or basket weaving.
 
Hi! Good luck with the PhD. I have a colleague who has a PhD in Computer Science, and it's a rare thing indeed. Got any plans with your career path from there?

In answer to your question, the back-end should be a black box to us which layers of complexity to take care of a multi-user audience influencing it a little every time they act. It should however be able to provide us with information relevant to us when we use it, perhaps a little more than it does right now. This is especially true for certain missions, where you only find out who you annoyed when you deliver, by which point you're Unfriendly, and being called outsider by every space station allied to the annoyed faction.

Don't look into the black box, for that way madness lies!
