Engineers The elusive Tin.... Am I doing it wrong?

Went to a metallic ring and mined for 2 hours. Found a ton of high value metals..... A few random elements..... Not an ounce of tin.... do I just need to mine More? :)

Maybe. Does the ring have pristine reserves?

I've only found it from surface prospecting myself. I'm pretty sure I've seen it as a mission reward too.

I've done a bit of testing, and I'm fairly sure that the pristinity of a ring doesn't matter. Different materials drop in diferent ring types, metal-rich rings seem to be the best. Rocky is good for some mats too. If I'm after rare mats, I drill the roid until it's depleted and check if there are any mats I want, then target them with a limpet. Uses one limpet per fragment, but that's OK for the rare stuff.

I found a reasonable amount of tin in Deciat (planet Deciat 1 surface).
And yesterday, I was at the site where the Alien ship is found...after having a look at the thing, I found tin at the 1st rock I checked in close proximity of it.
Still, Deciat 1 has a much higher tin %.

The best way to find Tin is, in my opinion...hunt for Polonium in the SRV, then you'll build up a big batch without noticing it because you'll be so &*))) ^&£^(()"£ annoyed at not getting Polonium.

I've got 11 tin and it hasn't been that difficult getting it.

This. Just go surface prospecting. You'll have Tin and loads of others in no time.

Also I have seen Tin as a mission reward plenty of times.

Especially now the Detailed Surface scan or existing data tells you exactly what materials can be found on a planet in what %s

Thanks for all the great info!

One more question.....once I find a planet can I just pick any spot or is there a best place to land sport to start prospecting?

In general, impact craters are a good place to start.
Also, look for signs of volcanic activity (a particular contrasting colour, for example).

Found two in something like 10 minutes on a planet's surface, from outcrops and such. So it seems that tin is more abundant on planet surfaces than in asteroids or rings. There is an online list called ED Materializer which can help you find the planet which has the resources you want.

Nope, it's all randomly generated. If you don't believe me mode switch when you're in front of a POI (ie. place with skimmers). You'll find it magically disappears. Apparently barnacles are an exception to this (they stay put).
