General / Off-Topic The Expanse - TV show

This series is brilliant. Loved it!

I have about 2 or 3 episodes left of series 2 :)

I bought that one yesterday :D

So, don't watch the Expanse before having read the series?

Well, you watch it first, you get to read it after with all the juicy extra details.

You read it first, you get to watch it brought to life afterwards, though slightly dumbed down.

The old read it first or watch it first question.

It's more like BSG than Babylon 5. I kinda miss that kind of show... you know, where you could actually get to know the places and the people. The biggest issue I have with the Expanse is that often characters have to do stupid things in order to progress the plot, and you basically go "why?". Or when the writers make rather big logical mistakes.

Like when a character finds that he has to keep pushing a button on a bomb every 30 seconds to prevent it from going off. He could've just taken the bomb with him to the ship that would've fetched him, instead he was convinced that he just has to die. All because the writers needed him to remain there.

As long as they don't do it all the time I can live with it.
But yeah you're right. Still I like that they don't wrap everything in cotton
We see the messy stuff, and ad long it don't take over I like how that is done.

I also like that they display many sides of the human race, color, sexuality and so on. Makes
The universe more believable somehow.

i started watching season 1, than bought all books and read them. i personally think, the books are even better, but paradoxically i'd suggest watching the series first.

a) because the general visualisation of the world us extremely well done in the series and adds to the wtitten world

b) because otherwise you'll watch the series and think "that's a bad shortcut ... this is better in the novels ..." etc., while in fact the series does a very good job!

anyway, after watching the series, definetly read the books.

Oh don't get me wrong, I think the Expanse is one of the best scifi shows right now. It took a bit to find its bearings in the beginning, but it's interesting and most importantly tries to tell a story. And that's the most important thing. If you don't have a story to tell, you end up like "Space: Above and Beyond" where the writers had the brilliant idea of maybe trying to get a coherent storyline going about 2 episodes before the season finale and the show wasn't renewed for another season.

I rarely get into series like these but I've binged watched both one and two and interested to see how three pans out.

I like it, and hope that there will be more seasons of it, just not like some of the other shows I've watched, they turned weird as they changed the writers.

Falling skies was one of them.

Falling skies was one of those shows that was constantly changing between reasonable and mediocre. Like if the production wasn't sure what to do with it. It ended up as yet another entry in the very long list of tv scifi show disappointments.

If they follow the books, it will get decidedly odd, but mostly in a cool way... Avarasala is one serious bad-a**.

I'm really liking the second series. It's much more comfortable with itself now after what thought was a weakish first series. I still dislike Holden as a character and the actor annoys me but most everyone else makes up for him.

The books honestly didn't hold my attention. Maybe i should give them another look though I probably just got pulled away into reading something else.

Someone likened it to battlestar galactica I wouldn't have put it up there with that series in either similarity or quality but that's just me. For my money BSG was one of the best sci fi series ever made and it would take a lot to top it.

Unfortunately, due to Netflix being either useless at negotiating with SyFy, being complete bathplugs™ or both, by the time it reaches the UK, the show has been broadcast everywhere else and they've had half a year to flood the internet with spoilers. Much the same as GoT tbh.

It's on Amazon Prime here in the States but not Netflix.

It's the closets you get to have a Elite Dangerous TV show :) I haven't seen anything that got closer than this one.

Finished off S2 last night with my girlfriend, really enjoyed it, and we've both decided to buy the books. Looking forward to S3 - I love watching the FA off manoeuvres!

One thing that does bug me a tad, is the total lack of any sort of on screen chemistry between Holden and Naomi. The rest of the show well and truly makes up for it, though.

Z...

Finished S2. Think this may be among my favourite TV shows. It's packed to the gills with space opera stuff that's never been done properly outside of books until now.

Really, really hope they bring in enough viewers to go beyond season 3.
