The fallacy of how PvP can protect your system from being undermined.

Open player faction can certainly use their preferred playstyle to protect their assets. They just have to make sure they are doing what the game requires of them to do so.

Players who prefer PVP Pew-pew over mission running or trade, will find that they are failing in their endeavour.

As I said elsewhere, ED sucks for PvP

How - as a moderator - can this be your argument for this kind of discussion.
Is your aim, that every PVP player who actually cares about the game should now stop playing ED?
Cause thats how it sounds for me and many others.

How do you know, its a lot of code necessary?
Have you already talked with the devs about that in the past minutes?
And even if... this seems to be the by far better compromise (a little bit of work for Frontier) then just hitting one (PVEers) or the other (PVPers) in the face.

The trader has the choice... the open minor faction does not!
If the trader wants to do his trading in peace without no harm, he can just switch in solo.
If the Open playing minor faction wants to defend its faction with their prefered playstyle, they can not.

Let me say this slowly for you... it MAKES NO DIFFERENCE which mode influence is changed in, because PvP has NO EFFECT on influence. The absolute MOST you can hope to achieve using PvP against influence is to slow it down slightly, and in the vast majority of cases you won't even do that!

You CAN'T defend your bit of the BGS with your "preferred playstyle" of PvP, because the BGS has NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. The ONLY way you can influence the influence (see what I did there?) is with PvE, because that's what the BGS is all about!

They made that choice when they asked frontier to add their player factions into the game. They agreed to be affected by all three game modes.

Rep.

I don't know why this is such a difficult concept. Do I need to bring back my visual analogy? :D

He never said that. He stated the obvious truth, AS STATED by FDev and DBOBE from day one! ED is primarily a cooperative game with a few elements of PvP added in. It is NOT and has NEVER been a PvP game.

[edit] Oh and as a mod (as you have already been told several times just in this thread) his job is ONLY to enforce forums rules. He's NOT an FDev employee, he's NOT a dev, he's a regular player and forum user like you and me who's been trusted to help enforce the forum rules, and he's STILL allowed to have his own opinions on the game, just like you and me. The only caveat for him being a mod and taking part in a thread like this is that he should get another moderator to enforce rules in this thread so he can't be accused of abuse of power. So please leave off with the "as a moderator..." guilt trip. (How do I know? I've been a mod on several large forums myself, and I can read what's been said to YOU several times in this thread.)

Guess what, trading in a PvP battleship without cargo hold doesn't work either.

This is not about modes.

Erm, you do know Mods are PEOPLE, who have OPINIONS, they are not robots who blindly enforce rules.

They are entitled to share their opinions as much as you are.
As long as they do it in a respectful manner in accordance to the rules, they can say what they like.
Be it pro-PvP or Anti-PvP and would you believe it, but they can even criticise Frontier / Elite: Dangerous *GASP*

Funny how freedom of speech and freedom of expression works for EVERYONE, not just those who agree with you.

Its how it is. Braben quite clearly has had an agenda from day one re this. I hold him personally responsible for all this anti PvP bandwagoning we've seen for years; we are all 'griefers' and 'psychos' apparently. The counter argument would be that the game is designed to facilitate players who are just bad (whoa just had to edit that, completey changed my word there) gamers. Can't hack it? don't worry my friend, here is solo and pg. Everyone here is a special snowflake.. forget skill, forget getting better.. FD have your back.

I've got a lifetime pass and so I'll likely always be involved with the game but if I didn't I wouldn't have bought Horizons.. And when a better space mmo comes along, I'll be gone, much like the rest of us folk here who are tired of being demonised.

But actually, perhaps we should just boycott the game. Lets see how far it goes with 20k players. :(

I just don't see how that could even work at all. At the very least, it would be a coding nightmare.
I'm software-engineer since 35 years. When it is possible to give systems ranking-dependend permissions it should be NO problem at all to have permissions depending on a state of a faction in that system.

Braben told you in the very beginning that it wasn't a PvP game. I know, coz I was there too.

With "defend" I mean building some deterrence by actively hunting players who try to undermine.
I am totally aware, that you still need PVE. And I am totally aware, that you can not stop anyone, if he really really want to untermine your system.
But most solo players I know, would just not do something like that - because the risk of losing too much, would be at least THERE.
And thats all the open players are asking for. To be able to build up some deterrence. Of course we would then still need PVE - but it would then actually make much more fun for us.

Nobody said it was impossible. What they said is that its a horrible game-breaking idea that would twist the game into being something radically different from what it was intended to be. Sure, FD could do it, but unless their heads are so far up their 4th point of contact that they need a glass window in their stomach to see where they are going, they wont.

You are effectively asking for mechanics to allow you or your group of buddies to control territory. This is something that DB has explicitly stated many times will NEVER be in the game.

"Actively hunting" is not the appropriate defence against undermining. If you want to defend against undermining you do so with supporting your own group, or undermining theirs.

Apparently you're not coz you still want to SHOOT them out of defence for your faction when you claim you understand that it has no such effect.

It doesn't make any difference if they do it in solo or open coz your defence is NOT to shoot them, it's to also do missions.

He did you are right although I did believe at the time I could talk sense to him. Let him reiterate that comment now and lets have it stated on the way the game is sold. THIS ISN't A PVP GAME. Put it in writing on the advertising, let the chips fall where they may. And if it isn't a PvP game then let the devs remove the ability for us to shoot at one another. ;) And watch as FD eventually goes bankrupt or the games development grinds to a halt.

PvP has it's place. I don't think the opening post denys that. The criticism the OP is presenting is that there seems to be PvP players who are failing to realize that they need transport ships and PvE tactics to meet the mission objectives.

This should not be a real problem. Just recruit a bunch of care-bears to take care of the PvE logistics. Eve alliances all have industrial/care bear corps that make those big ships and exploit those resources... all of whom appreciate having good combat guys around.

Perfect.

As an Open player, I have no desire for Fdev to accommodate me and my special snowflake needs. I understood what the game was when I bought it. I will not ask the game developers to change their philosophy on design for their game to accommodate how I think it should work. I can only seek to understand how it does work, and then attempt to use what I have learned about how the game behaves to affect the greatest change in my favor as I can.

How would PVE be more fun for you if you are actively trying to PVP?

All a group, any group, has to do to increase their faction influence is run positive BGS effects for their faction, and negative BGS effects for other factions.

PVP doesn't enter into it all. That is simply wishful thinking.

Fallacy! You can equally defend a PVE attack from any mode by utilizing a PVE attack from Open. The BGS is not affected by PVP.

Weeeellll...... :D

But yes we are allowed to have an opinion, the rules apply to everyone including the Mod team.

Trust me I spend a lot of time counting to 10 and biting my lip.

Funny how freedom of speech and freedom of expression works for EVERYONE, not just those who agree with you.

Yep, everyone is entitled to their opinion, they can if they so wish; praise and or criticise aspects of the game as long as they follow the rules.

I know passions can run high, bur take a moment to review a post before hitting the submit button.

The overwhelming passion the forum members feel for the game is why the game and forum are as great as they are.

But to reiterate again: Moderators are allowed to make an opinion both positive and negative as long as they abide by the rules.
