The Federal Security Service

Dear Elite Dangerous Game Designers,

Today I met a gameplay decision that is so furiously enraging, the temperature of my room feels like inside the core of the Sun.

This is my second day in the game and I'm taking mission to assassinate the deserter. After a hour of my time trying to intercept him, I managed to do that. Here was the first time I engaged in combat with someone who matches my level. I'm only starting to get used of combat controls, when FEDERAL SECURITY TURNS IN AND DESTROYS MY TARGET, THE CONTRACT IS GONE AND I'M HANGING IN SPACE WITH FEELING OF UTTER DESOLATION AND EMPTINESS.

I didn't get money for that mission, but it's not money that you stole for me - it's the FEELING OF ACCOMPLISHING SOMETHING, OF BEING WORTHY, OF MAKING THE ULTIMATE REVENGE ON THAT DESERTER WHO HAD BEEN ELUDING ME FOR AN HOUR.

Why they even give me that mission if FEDERAL SECURITY CAN MAKE IT ANYTIME? Isn't the point of that mission that he is out of security reach so they hire ME to handle this? I'm feeling like their FSL CONTRADICTION ****TCH, 'cause I made all the dirty and boring work for them only to show off and destroy that guy (who has battletag HARMLESS, btw) with excessive firepower. They even SCANNED me after all this and sent me a message like "you're clear, citizen, carry on", which felt like mocking.

I'm very disappointed and that occasion spoiled my day.
Best regards, CMDR Frimgehnier

There is an option that let's you avoid this happening again in the future: Go to the status panel (the one on the right in your cockpit), go to the rightmost tab (the one that lets you change various settings related to your ship), scroll down and find the "Report crimes against me" option. Deactivate this one the next time you want to do an assasination, or bounty hunt without wanting to be disturbed. See, the Feds came to finish that guy off, because you explicitely called them (or rather your ship did that automatically). With the mentioned setting deactivated, your ship won't call the police anymore so you can enjoy the privacy with your target ;)

This^^

Just remember to turn it back on afterwards. :p

Although, your target dying should complete your mission no matter who killed it, as long as you are there to witness it, and get a few shots in.

Also, for future reference, security scan you all the time, regardless. And mockingly say "We found nothing on you.. this time!"... And I'm like "when am I ever a criminal here?" as i casually look at my list of bounties placed on me in other factions....
:p

Chin up CMDR, could be worse, Assassination Missions used to just be completely broken, which just entirely wasted your time. :p

Does this system work similarly to getting the bounty? Cause IIRC you only get the bounty if you participated in the destruction of the hull. Shields don't count.

Actually that won't work with assassinate deserter missions. The security services are part of that mission's design, and are generally already in the instance. If you want an assassination mission where there will be no interference, take a pirate lord one.

OP, even if the security services are there, you only need to get a shot in before the target is destroyed (well, within 10 seconds or so of it going boom) and you will be credited with the kill and won't fail the mission.
