I agree with OP. And I'm saying this as someone who will be buying a name plate.

Yet, a basic nameplate should be available for everyone (as you have a basic paintjob) and pay for fonts, styles, colors...

As OP says, watching the name on your ship would make you want to personalize it, like drugs, first one is free... [big grin]

Cosmetic Ship Name Plates

The ship name plates will offer an added layer of cosmetic personalisation for Commanders wanting to wear their name with pride, much like paint jobs and other cosmetics currently available in the store.

Name plates will be made available in themed packs. These packs will contain three designs, each of which will be available in three colours: black, white, and grey. This makes a total of 9 nameplates per pack. After purchase, each pack will be available for use across all of your ships (Ship launched fighters and SRVs don’t have name plates) and each pack of 9 variant plates will be coming into store at just £2/€2.5/$3. This means that purchasing one pack of name plates will allow you to use that style across all of your current and future ships, at the same time and rename each individual ship as many times as you like. We believe this flexibility offers Commanders great value and is a great way to help support the continued development of Elite Dangerous.

I'm drawing the line here too.

I've given a lot of money to Frontier, I don't regret it at all, but I'll need a convincing season 3 to start supporting again.

I still think they'd make more sales if the basic hull name was free, but getting the name on the scan is the big takeaway.

But seriously, how about having the ATC of station read out the Ship's ID instead of the first three letters of the CMDR's name?

Yep, completely agree OP.

FDev are being spectacularly scummy with this move. It's indefensable in my honest opinion.

There are good and bad ways to do microtransactions, and this is a prime example of the kind of predatory snake-oil-salesman present on iOS and mobile platforms that as a core gamer I try my best to move away from.

Essentially, for me:

- Charging for coloured pew pew lasers = no problem at all
- Charging to let others see the name of my ship (which is the entire point of adding the ship naming feature) = scummy-as-hell that FDev should really be ashamed of themselves for

Apparently not, Ed has clarified you can see ships names in a scan without a nameplate. Nameplates will cost about 2EUR 50.

False alarm everyone!

All ships. Return to base.
