The Forever Winter

I know I said I'd wait to buy this after watching a video claiming it's not in a good state, but I got it day one anyway.

It's not as rough as they claimed. Performance is probably not great. It's OK for me but I have a GTX 4070. Frame rate wasn't great on ultra settings in the base when I first started it. Ran great on High. Didn't try putting it back on ultra. It might just have been stuttering loading stuff in. Might be horrible on a lower spec machine.

The game play was exactly as I expected. You will get smashed in a straight fight, but works well as a stealth game. I didn't have any issue with enemies magically knowing where I was from the other side of the map, which was the compliant I was most worried about. There was a cool moment where I was watching some soldiers patrolling a building I wanted to get into. Suddenly they got into a fight and I manged to sneak in behind them while they were distracted. This is exactly the sort of game play that was promised, so a thumbs up from me.

I managed to extract 2 out of 4 raids, I only killed one enemy in all 4 raids.

Nice one, I'll go ahead and grab that now that you've tested it :D

There is a bit of jankyness in the movement, I got stuck in a hole last night, lucky some random guy had joined my game and he managed to knock me out of it so I could move again.

I've only had two crashes to desktop so far, both of them were messing with weapon presets so there's obviously a bug there.

A lot of complaints about the water mechanic, water supply goes down even while you are offline, and if it runs out you lose your stash. However I don't think this is a big a deal as they are making out, I've only had the game two days and I have loads of guns, ammo medkits etc. and stacks of cash. You'd get it all back in no time. and you don't lose your character progression, which seems to be a much slower grind.

Also I've put it back up to Ultra settings and it's fine, not sure what that initial choppiness was.

Just been reading about the water mechanic, and to be honest I am not sure what to think.

I tend to play games in fits and starts , not regularly, so I am not sure how that would work with this. It might be easy to get your kit back, but I am pretty sure after the umpteenth time it will get annoying.

But ..... That being said it is only £22.49, not exactly Idris money (as mentioned above) and probably has better gameplay loops, so I am probably still gonna take the plunge.

Edit: I bought it.

Having played a lot more over the weekend, It's definitely janky, AI is a bit rubbish and there are some annoying bugs like enemies spawning out of nowhere right next to you. but the main gameplay loop is kind of addictive. The atmosphere and environment design is excellent.
