THE FORMIDINE RIFT MYSTERY (Part 4)

Maybe the VIP's will multicrew and not wing up? You just might get front row seats.

Lucky nine people... (and three on XBox) - assuming the VIPs are all in large ships that can take three crew. Almost as fun as the normal instancing lottery to get one of those. Better than nothing I guess.

It's going to be one hell of a test for the netcode.

They've made 80 or more server updates in the last few weeks according to their lead developer last night, so I am sure it is solid.

This is something that hasn't ever been attempted before [citation needed], so I think they deserve credit for taking a risk and making the attempt..

Hmm, I don't think this is the citation you are looking for:

Live Events

Live events and in-game events are a key feature in Ultima Online which makes it vastly different from any other MMORPG. There are different types of events, which are run over several days or at specific times. Events vary in difficulty and are a great place to meet up with your shards community.

In-Game Events

Live Events are often created and run by the developers of the game with assistance from the EM, Event Moderator, team:
...

Arc Events/Ongoing Events:

Ultima Online Story, mixed with Lore from the Ultima series of single player games.
Often in many parts, each part lasting around 30 days.
...

Event Moderator and Shard Events

Event Moderators, EM(s), are on most shards and run unique events to bring community together, tell a story, and build interest in the game.

EMs and RPCs

...

RPC, Role Play Characters, are characters the EMs will use and be in full RP, they will not understand you if you mention real world things such as “internet”. Using brackets with a message, [MESSAGE], is the only way to say something to them out of character and them to understand.
...

Arc Events: Story line events with a plot, uses RPCs to tell the story and help the players on their adventure. Often a character is used repeatedly and gains friendship, or grows hatred, of the people of the land; building depth and meaning to the story that is played out.

...

RP Events: These events are done only by an RPC. The EM will not break character. These events help build the storyline for Arc events.

I think the "hasn't ever been attempted before" line needs to go back to Marketing for some rework before Richard Garriott sees it. "Hasn't ever been attempted before in Elite Dangerous" maybe?

Well 46 Eridani is fairly busy already - all smaller ships - Lave news Network just came into the system.

The various groups are sending in ships ahead of time to try to "claim" the instances and keep them live until the event for their own players.

In all of this, it's important to remember that it's the players who are the reason that the event is becoming increasingly unappealing to some of us.
Drew and FDev have done what they can, within the constraints of the game mechanics, to allow us players to influence both the future direction of the game and the novel that goes alongside it.
This is something that hasn't ever been attempted before [citation needed], so I think they deserve credit for taking a risk and making the attempt.
Either the event will go well, and people will have fun, or it won't - either way, FDev will learn something from it and the next event will be (even) better.

These are all good points. Both Drew and FD have goals for this event. And kudos for setting it up.

Drew wants material for the next novel with player contribution. He's definitely getting that already. It shouldn't be too suprising that groups of people start out wanting to do good and end up becoming a mob, or start imposing their will on others "for the greater good". Even as far back as the 20th century, often those who do the greatest evil are those who believe they are doing the greatest good. Makes for good reading. Especially since this kind of behavior is what Salome is fighting against. And how would this effect her, to see hundreds killed in her name a second time?

FD I am sure, wants to encourage players to play, and probably spend more time in open. This is, or was, a great opportunity to get all kinds of players out there in open and be part of the event. But now we have a group trying to encourage just the opposite and gain complete control over the event.

I think if PAC said they would attack other players based on their behavior rather than their ship loadout, everyone would be happier and would encourage many more people to come out and watch. It might increase the risk to the VIPs slightly, but so what? Let Drew and FD manage that risk.

I have to say, despite my optimism earlier, I am seriously considering knocking this on the head and just going to the cinema instead.

It's a pity, but it seems CoR have got themselves in with some little Hitlers. Such a shame. They really could have been the good guys here, but I am close to removing their logo from my sig now.

If I do show, I'll be looking to protect Tsu, then Raan then Salomé. And it will be in one of my full combat Pythons. Full weapons, fully engineered, no interdictor. There will be enough of those. But I can see Salomé getting to her destination and having four Faraguts and dozens of Elite npcs who kill her because the Hitlers demanded no one have weapons.

But let's see, dodging arseholes who are supposed to be the same side vs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2...

I don't believe the UO events have been used to provide content for a novel, so I think it's still good.

You think? http://ultima.wikia.com/wiki/Ultima_Books#Novels

They have manga covered too (or graphic novels, or whatever the kids are calling it these days).

I've been here off and on for a week - do I get squatters rights ? :p

Only if you can keep your instance open and alive for the next 48 hours or so...

Will there be a beer truce in effect? Like it's ok to attack in a PvP furball, but if participants scream "beer" you must stop shooting for 20 seconds to give them time to run to the fridge to get another round? Of course, no shooting back either and no cheating? :)

I think that is the equivalent (or a convenient side effect) of Han Zen's (dare I say ingenious) plan to have indie pilots honk them all with UPs...

All this 29th event is just a game feature. With the limited consistency of a...game.
Because: what Sala..Salomé knows, CoR (storyline faction not players faction) also knows.
And if CoR knows, then The Dark Wheel also knows. '...an affiliation of organisations that share a common role.'
They don't lack means to broadcast whatever/whenever they want.

CoR IS a player faction though just like any other, created by Elite Dangerous players... not sure what you mean by storyline faction and not player faction?, or any association with the Dark Wheel?

Do UPs work on other ship in area? I thought it was only yours that got disabled.

Anyone within a certain radius of the EMP pulse it emits after you honk it is my understanding. Could be wrong. I've never seen one.

I've had them but haven't tested them on anybody but myself. It'd be fun if they affected other ships same way.

I'm sure one of those scientisty-people will jump in and correct me if I am wrong. ;-)

And even if I am it is still a good rumour to start to put some fear into the hearts of the PvPerz.

Aye, i'd use that trick just for the beer fetching ability alone.

Yep. Not sure what the range is though. Im planning on bringing some. I picked up 2 today, and hope to find time to get another 2 before the event.

You can blame Han-Zen for thinking of it on the canonn thread.
