Did you get a good price from them?

Add the rogue AI that has been mentioned on Galnet

When was this mentioned? I remember MB mentioned 'a few might have escaped' in the recent exploration live stream.. I didn't know this had been confirmed in-game too.

Very interesting!
So this opens up some new E: D musings. We have been labouring under the assumption that Raxxla is a place (as per The Dark Wheel); however perhaps FD have themselves gone back to the original lore (Holdstock/Eisler's The Alien World) and Raxxla are in fact the ruthless aggressive alien reptilian race that will be the "great threat". So are Salome & the CoR really friendly after all?

The other alternative threat is from the lost Generation ship inhabitants that have been perhaps changed during their journeys & may be suspicious/aggressive.

Add the rogue AI that has been mentioned on Galnet, plus friendly/unfriendly Thargoids, & the 'verse just got a whole lot more interesting!

"May you live in interesting times" is said to be an ancient curse!
:))

Honestly I doubt anyone at Frontier is aware of the Holdstock/Eisler connection. When I presented my find to Drew it was new to him. I suppose it is possible that Braben and Bell were aware of 'The Alien World' at the time Holdstock was hired to pen the Elite Space Trader's Manual and The Dark Wheel.

Speculation is great but this thread often gets mired in such. I'd love to talk more about "The Alien World" and connections to Elite but ... just to keep the universe from running out of the last remnants of tinfoil I've started a new thread just on the topic of the Holdstock/Eisler connection: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=245233

It would probably be best to discuss this over there because I can see this thread, which should be dedicated to the Rift, quickly moving off-topic. I honestly can't find anything in 'The Alien World' related to the Formidine Rift ... Drew didn't know about the Eisler book so that precludes a connection. Could Braben have borrowed something from 'The Alien World' for Raxxla? Possibly ... but that greater mystery goes beyond the scope and purpose of this thread.

Keep flying Commander! And thanks for watching!

So i headed back out into the rift determined to follow the RR line as far as i could into the paltry lack of stars that is Phoi Aescs.

If you check out the pic you will see the purple is all plain sailing then the green is where i had to resort to jump mats, but i did get across the rift, or at least map its outer left boundary.

Even with the "cheating jumps" eventually I had to abandon any hope of staying near the RR line and like a life preserver bobbing on the salty horizon of drowning man I made it over to Qohen Leth's exit point of Syreadiae AK-H B30-0, BTW thanks for making it an L-brown dwarf, like i didn't need gas and a pee at that point;)

My last run through the rift I didn't bother trying to hold a course. I just panned around on the galaxy map and followed the more high density aggregations of stars.

With this approach I just barrelled through it, didn't have to backtrack or sidestep once.

The Generation ship(s) and their crews could be the possible "worse than Thargoids" presence, we're being warned against. This threat would be a greater threat number wise, than a few Dark Wheeler's that have re-discovered Raxxla in the Formidine Rift and wanting to defend it's secret location at all costs. An explanation as to the danger from the Generation Ships seems to be given by Eisler as you've told in the video.

I hope the Raxxla-Elite missions returns in 2.1/1.6 so that we'll have more clues as to the location of Raxxla. Only missions I've found previously that could suggest the Formidine Rift was the "Obuscated in the Outer Rim" missions, the words "Outer Rim" being the link here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=168253&p=2571931&viewfull=1#post2571931.

It is odd that these (and the SAP-8/Dark wheel ones) have disappeared without any sign or comment of why. Someone mentioned they thought you could still get them at Shinrarta, but I have been running missions out of there trying to get my influence up with you-know-who for a couple of weeks now, and no sign of them. Were they bugged and incomplete so FD dropped them for now until they can do proper chained missions? Or were enough of them completed that some unknown part of the story was triggered in the background, leading to their removal, and we just have not seen it yet? It would be nice to know - if the first, all the time we spent doing them was largely wasted story-wise (other than for the almighty credits of course). If the second, it would be nice to know what, if any effect we had by completing them. Puppets dancing.

My pleasure :D

EDIT: I think I just trilaterated all the systems in your dotted green line, within about 41ly of range. Currently backtracking to seek another path, western or eastern.

Personally I think that this is the right approach. The R/R line brings us TOO the Rift. The directions at this point are to carefully plot a course across. The old lady indicated that we'd have to plot the course using 'Dark Systems' which were never implemented into the game. Drew however has confirmed that even without the Dark Systems 'It' can be found and has been implemented since Gamma. I wouldn't be too worried about keeping along the R/R line during the trip across.

The problem, of course, is the vastness of space. We aren't even sure if what we are looking for INSIDE the Rift or on the OTHER SIDE of the Rift. We can't even be sure if the area of space between the Perseus and New Outer arms is 'The Rift'. It could be a reference to the intergalactic space on the far side of the New Outer Arm. There is just so much we still don't know!

It is strange that they just despaired. Drew told something about story arcs that were aborted, due to player action. Some stories have even been removed from the Galnet archives.

What happened to the Silver Comet that hunted Elite pilots? Why was UAs called AEOs for a while? Where are the scientists working with illegal AI in the old worlds?

Lots of open ends....

I'm allied with the Dark Wheel (shh don't tell CoR) and I don't remember seeing these for a long time, Shin Dez is my home system. They were elite rank locked though, maybe they don't show up anymore until you're 'leet.

Hoping to make pioneer in a few days so can't check myself. Actually those missions are the main motivation for trying to get to leet explorer, so if they are totally gone I'd love to know!

The missions implied that the sap8 cores held encrypted data; a certain dev post mentioned them in almost the same breath as the barnacles. Hazarding a guess they may have held location data for barnis or something related. Which may be why they are no longer relevant.

Damn. Sometimes I hate my trainwreck of thought.

I could tell you what happened to the Silver Comet ... or you could just read Tales from the Frontier for yourself. That was one of the better short stories in the anthology.

Are you kidding me?:D I have read Tales from the Frontier several times. I don't remember the Silver Comet.

Yep. The Comet's Trail by Darren Grey.

To be clear this is the anthology collection released just prior to 'Dangerous' not the short story collection "Stories of Life on the Frontier" released with Frontier: Elite 2.

Ahh - must read that one now. Thanks.

You may well be correct-MB rather than Galnet. My memory is confused, too much Lavian brandy last night

This map is VERY useful for those of us trying to narrow down the rift region and map the varying star density.

Could you let us know your maximum jump range without jumponium mats please?

If anyone else has detailed plots of crossing attempts or information of encountered star density, please get in touch.

It'll be much easier once i made the map for EDD, then we'll have the map and trilaterated paths. :p
