the FSS, watching paint dry....

So anyone else find this incredibly boring? I think I'm going to quit while I'm ahead here, way too many controls to map and rather confusing to boot.[where is it] Heading back to bubble to try out the new mining. Hope you die hard explorers have fun!

I haven't enjoyed the FSS because I find it tedious. Would be nice to have some version of this in the cockpit UI. Either way, just not fun.

Yes, it is extremely boring. If becomes even more boring after you setup the controls and are able to use it with muscle memory alone.

I am, for the 4th time, trying to have a bite at the turd sandwich, hoping it might be an acquired taste (mostly because I had left my ship at the Gnosis when I last played the live build and logged in to realize the Gnosis is in the Elephant's Trunk nebula 2K away from the bubble). But the more I point and zoom and zoom and point, the more I hate it.

How can you complain about it being terribly boring if you apparently can't even be bothered to finish mapping out the controls for it?

I have mapped them, but I really can't see how this would be considered fun to do!! The biggest thing I regret is wasting the time mapping all the keys, then watching some guides on how to use it. I almost fell asleep twice while watching a guide.

Correct. Once that's done it gets a little better. Also the boring side all depends on how you decide to use the new tools to explore.

Everyone has their own views at the end of the day and some will find it very tedious and monotonous, others will enjoy it. If its not for you then at least there are other aspects of the game to enjoy.

On that note!

I'm 20000ly from the bubble and can't work out how to exp,ore anymore! Anyone seen an ELW?

Honk and jump back until I can do some mining.... blowing up asteroids sounds fun...

Too many buttons to map - yes, absolutely. FSS and DSS. And don't get me started on having to switch modes as well as fire groups. God knows how the console players manage with their little controllers. But if Frontier can reduce that down the actual mechanics of it will remain superb. Now I just need to figure out what each of those arrow combinations mean... I'll get there in the end.

Add probes to fire group
Add enter FSS
Add toggle mode
2 analogue sticks to move around
2 shoulder buttons to tune
2 shoulder buttons to zoom in/out
Add an exit FSS button

Easy peasy, 9 buttons plus one extra on fire groups (only if you use probes) - works great on console controller, can't speak for hotas/m+k brigade

I'll probably tweak things going forwards but this was enough to get going and use it easily and regularly with a minimum of fuss, though by the sounds of it YMMV

Watching paint dry is really a good description of how the old DSS worked. Oh how long I sat and stared at the rotating wheel of triangles while waiting on the DSS....

It took me a bit to get past the control bindings for the FSS. Frontier adding a toggle function for the FSS was a big help.

But the FSS system works for me now. No, it's not some deep and engaging gameplay experience. But for me, it's far more appealing and engaging than watching that old DSS wheel spin and spin and spin.

:-/

I used to despise exploration with its old boring scanning mechanics of "fly towards planet, then point at planet for X amount of seconds", but this new system has turned me into a completionist whenever scanning a system.

I haven't bound all the controls for it, just the mouse X and Y axis movement, enter/exit , and the arrows keys with left/right/up/down as tune left/right/zoom in/ zoom out.

The old system was the most boring excuse for gameplay ive seen in ED and kept me from exploring much at all. At least the new system has me doing something most of the time.

It could still be fleshed out and expanded upon but its ways ahead of the old system!

This new system is a convoluted mess and what is with the horrid 1980s graphics?! Exploration was simple if a little basic before, now it's just a Button Bind Hell that takes too long. Not impressed but I may persevere another day.

I manage easily. Left stick click and L1 shoulder for Night vision, and Left stick and R1 for HUD mode switch. X and Dpad UP for FSS. It took me 3 seconds to remember my combinations. In fact, I used to play the PC game with keyboard and mouse. I find the controller far easier. Sorry.

To actually complete the exploration content, you still have to go to the body to shoot at it.
And while the DSS waiting game was terrible, I'm not convinced this is any better.
Bizarre, FD gets rid of DSS scanning (yay), adds FSS blind bobbing (boo).
