The great big Odyssey Screenshots thread

After restoring power to the biological research facility, Sen takes a moment to download a few bits of information from their system. Taking advantage of the empty facility to do some investigation into what was actually being done there. As the people that hired him to complete the mission, have no idea he is working undercover to locate a bounty that he is after. Knowing the the man he has been contracted to hunt down has a connection to this facility , he quickly finds his name and information located on the now powered up facility computers.

Turning and doing a quick scan of the planet, he can see that the facility command center is transmitting a signal. Letting the owners and management of the place know it is on line. He can see skimmers being launched from near by docking stations and decides it is a good time to go. Heading to the door he checks a few lockers. Finding a scrambler and a transmitter that has been coded for the facility communications systems he decides to take it along with him. It may come in handy.

As he makes his way through the building. He can hear the sounds of machines activating. Various testing systems coming on line. The sounds of pumps and liquid being processed through near by tanks. The slight smell of chemicals in the air causes his throat to go dry almost in an instant. A cough escapes his lips, as he clears his throat.

Just before reaching the airlock to head into the cold and hail a shuttle for extraction, he hears a near by system say ; "Cobra Operating system. On line."

The name makes Sen stop, turn and focus his attention on the console near the door. His narrows his gaze at the system console in front of him. "Son of a .." He whispers. His suit alerts him that his shuttle is inbound.

Quickly moving to the console he attempts to find a way to download the files from this machine. The Cobra OS system clearly resonating with him. He knows he will not have time to download all the files he needs. "Damn it." he turns and heads for the door. Grabbing his helmet he left near the airlock he places it over his head and locks in in place. "Time to go..." He says as he steps out into the cold, his shuttle landing in the distance. "Going to need a bit of an upgrade to my personal armor for when I come back here." Looking over his shoulder at the console behind him. Turning away and heading to the shuttle. "When I blow this place to hell."

I see I'm far from the first but wow ... getting out of the ship in the SRV and then getting out of the SRV on foot ... it's quite a special moment isn't it!

Yeah I know, I just look out the window and it's everywhere....oh you mean in game? It's a life bearing planet, they tend to do that over millions of years of evolution, I am just glad it didn't end up being an extension of what we had with atmosphereless worlds, that was fairly silly and would have been even sillier with atmospheric worlds, an entire planet and the plants only decided to live in 6 spots? Hello realism, lets have a talk about life!

Hmmm. Doesn't Mars have a thin atmosphere? Not sure the old "look out the window" analogy really works for the planets we can land on in Odyssey.

Sure it does, as long as the atmosphere is thick enough to carry a seed of some sort, life will adapt to the local conditions. I can understand life being spread out on an airless world because there's really no carrier for propagation, but life will adapt to local conditions and over millions of years will spread out to fill every habitable area on the planet.

I drove my SRV out of my sidewinder while it was docked in the planetary base hangar. Got out and walked around outside the base. Shot up some drones. They didn't kill me, just fined me 100 credits per round. Took some pics, couldn't drive my SRV b

ack to my sidewinder hangar, so had to self destructed. Paid my fines and went to the bar. A good first day in phase 2.

Anyway, at least now we know what happens when you die on foot on the surface of a planet while your ships parked there! Well I do anyway, you just reappear in your ship in orbit!

You can do it, there are a number of garages around, you have to drive into one and you can get back to the sidewinder from there! It's tricky if that's the first time you have been outside in a large base!

Is the new renderer really better?
Being someone that works with 3D lighting often, and IRAY renders. I am torn on this one. I know that it is an alpha and the focus is really on mechanics at this stage. But their are some aspects I would like to point out. On both the pro's and the Cons;

1) In this shot I feel the lighting from Odyssey is better although the Avatar creation is lacking tremendously. But please note, That creating realistic humans is NOT easy. And the render and making it game optimized is difficult.

2) I do feel that external lighting is overpowering all of Odyssey at the moment. I think that localized lighting inside ships and stations would be better. The over all lighting has some major issues. Pointing to an example ,, Load up your avatars suit loadout while going through space that is VERY dark. You can hardly see the "Hollow me" avatar. The lighting is running Dominate over all 3D renders in the game. Second point of example is the dashboards of the ship . It is VERY dark. No ambient light other then the star or stars near by. This needs to stop (Sorry all those space fans that want it to be so dark you can not see) You have to compensate to human technology to give lighting where it is needed.

3) And at the last.

This is of course an Alpha. And many scoff at the paying to play the alpha but I honesty feel so very privileged to do so. What an amazing experience to test out, comment on, and help shape the future of this amazing and wonderful game. The hours on hours that so many of the talent of FD have to do what they do. And to be apart of a small group of alpha testers that offer hours of testing, comments, bug finding. and overall feedback. o7 to each and all of you.

VR worked surprisingly well, I just wish the on foot part would move my head when I look, make the grey background black and render the second eye. happy VR solution for me.

I'm actually quite happy about the Holo-Me editor. It's better than many character editors in other games in my opinion. Creating East Asian characters is often difficult because of the lower nose bridge and the eyelids with epicanthic folds, but ED does the job reasonably well without resorting to fixed presets like Cyberpunk 2077 does.

But I agree about the lighting. The Horizons shot has more depth because there is ambient light illuminating the areas facing away from the direct light. In Odyssey cockpits there seems to be no ambient light at all. Also, surfaces that have detail in Horizons look completely flat in Odyssey. Inside the new station interiors the results are much better, so maybe they just forgot to add light probes to the cockpits.

I have finally managed, after some effort, to find a landable planet with a nitrogen atmosphere, unfortunately it is still very pink, so that's a bit of a blow, I was hoping for blue skies!
